Holme Fell long. Brutal...

I don't think this could have gone much worse to be honest. Not quite sure why I had the stubbornness to finish... I wasn't enjoying it.

Physically knew I wasn't going to be good with lack of training. Didn't feel good from the start though, plenty of grottiness in the nothern woodland pissed me off, and the rockiness underfoot didn't help either. Every uphill section towards the end felt like a mountain. Not enough food/sleep either.

Technically was pretty crap too. Again ground-to-map, run in right direction and hope. Lucked out on more than one occasion where I didn't have a clue if I was at the right height. Dragged by the windblow, though it would have helped immensely if they'd mapped all of it. Chose the west path route for the long leg and couldn't even execute that properly. Micro route choices were crap, adding climb and unnecessarily going down steep slopes. Didn't cope with the continuous technicality or the map very well. And I still can't see a nice way of solving #29 so it can be done reliably at speed.

Fortunately didn't make any huge blunders, just four stupid errors - misreading #7 and going all the way up, down and around the hill to the correct crag; paralleling rocky re-entrants to #15 when bang on line in the first place; missing #22 on the butterfly having already been there from exactly the same direction... and reaching wrong place on circle edge at #24.

Not quite sure what to take from this run, maybe just be glad that it's over with...

Bigland middle. Poor navigation early on, a bit better nearer the end. Not a great fan of the mapping in places.

Looking forward to this but never really got into it. Find it a struggle in these areas that are a bit rough underfoot to look at the map enough. Wasn't simplifying the legs very well in the tricky bit - something I need more practice on.

But most annoying was that all the big errors I made were easily avoidable:

#1 - OK onto and across the hill then got dragged too low. Climbed up to it, but control site didn't look anything like I'd visualised. 90" lost but should have gone for safer route from above and used the fence as a distance marker.

#5 - lower route onto track then up rough open, over wall. Saw chance of parallel error, saw wall jct as obvious attackpoint and way of ensuring I got it right. But never went there!! Idiot. Parallel error ensued, at least another 90" gone.

#12 - chose a good route but didn't execute well (2'). Relocated off a ruin/house then reached big steep re-entrant wasn't expecting. Contoured around and relieved to drop into the right control. Map around here felt pretty dodgy.

#13 - Faffed one spur/set of re-entrants too early. Huge crag above actual set should have made it easy. Another 2'

#22 - dragged to obvious visible control near end of leg, too much map to ground, grateful to Andy for leading me in (30")

Plenty of other hesitation/slowness (at 2 and 3, 6-9, 14,15, 17, 18) but no big mistakes here; stupidly went up wrong spur at 24. Would say 4, 10, 11, 16, 19-21, 23, 25 were good so 9/25...

Generally too much ground-to-map navigation and when I was going the right way the mental picture I had often didn't match up with what I saw. Got a bit better later in the course but that bit of terrain was easier. Need far more practice on this stuff.

In two minds whether to do a faster session or a steady run. So it became a bit of both - the hillier route with a few faster sections thrown in to see how things felt. Total ~7'30" of efforts and the rest steady/recovery after efforts.

Hills not feeling that great at the moment - max HR hit at end of 1' (50") 1' uphill combination at end of run but only just sub 5min/k on the hills. Speed felt OK on the flat, similar to track workouts in Boston. Good variant on a standard run though.

Note

12.9k and 965m climb at Holme Fell next Sunday... 7 years ago 12.5k/665m was won in 88:30 so looks like we're in for a toughie.

Note
(rest day)

Just an easy cycle to town and back, legs not feeling too bad.

Fairly happy with my running over the weekend, given the paucity of recent training. I expected to be relatively slow, but running feels so much better when there's something else to concentrate on! A good couple of months before the 6-day now to work on fitness.

Technically wasn't too bad for the most part but a bit too lazy at times, guessing where I should be going and getting it wrong, rather than slowing down and making sure I'm right. Need more practice/better technique when the visibility decreases. Looking forward to next weekend in the Lakes now for some more practice :)
