Cycling 2:25:00 [2] 50.4 km (20.9 kph) +300m

Long cycle ride with Jon M - down to his then Sandford, Kennington, Bayworth, Boars Hill, Wootton, Cothill, Tubney, Fyfield, Appleton, Cumnor, Wootton, Boars Hill, Chiswell Valley on roads, then across to Harcourt Hill on the bridlepath (bumpy, a bit like a pneumatic drill at times on the arms) before cutting back through Oxford via the Botley Rd and towpath along the Isis - this latter bit slowed things down slightly given (unsurprisingly) the number of people out by the Isis today.

Very nice day out, but glad I was cycling rather than running - breeze was most appreciated and didn't get too warm. Generally felt comfortable on the way round, exceptions being the hills up to Boars Hill each time, second one was really quite steep. Tried to up the cadence in a couple of sections to increase heart rate which worked to a certain extent I think.

Nice snooze during the afternoon on a sunny day.

Orienteering 25:00 [2] **
shoes: Asics 1120

Putting out/collecting in controls in Headington Hill Park, and a brief foray up and around Brookes to check none had gone walkabouts given the amount of time Scott had been out... Turned out one of the controls had been put in the wrong place, hence the 'delay'.

Orienteering 21:02 [5] *** 3.65 km (5:46 / km) +55m 5:22 / km
spiked:17/17c shoes: Asics 1120

So having mapped the area, printed maps, hung some controls and checked out the controls were still there, had a non-competitive run round the cuppers course. Good fun, still took a couple of non-optimal route choices (over-familiarity can be a bad thing) but knew where all the blocking walls, entrances/exits etc were...

So much better than just having the parks though, glad I decided it was worth the effort :)

Quite warm out, feels a little nicer now there's a bit of a breeze.

Will see if I can sort out Routegadget....

Note
(rest day)

OCAD-ing Brookes map for most of the day (ocad always seems to take far too long), annual dinner this evening so no training today.

Mapping 1:00:00 [0]

Last bit of surveying for Brookes map

Note

Today it feels (and looks) like I was eaten alive by all the midges on the way back last night. Arms really quite itchy... little bastards.

Running warm up/down 8:15 [2] 1.75 km (4:43 / km)
shoes: Asics 1120

Warm-up run over to South Park, along the Cowley Rd as that's the quick route and I was keeping to form with my ability to be on time...

Running hills 37:15 [4] +270m
shoes: Asics 1120

New training officer Holmes has reintroduced the OUOC Hill Reps session. 3 sets of 5 x 45" (75-80" jog back down recovery), and about 2.5 mins between sets. Legs still didn't feel particularly fluid, but paced it fairly well and hitting the cone quite consistently for most of the reps, but it certainly felt more of a leg than a cardio work-out... which seems a little strange.

Good group out - myself, Anne, Jon M, Timmeo and Chris E all very evenly paced and finishing each rep (~200m, ~20m climb) within 5-10m of each other. Still pretty warm at 6pm - meant to stay like this for the next few days too.

Running warm up/down 13:15 [2] 2.5 km (5:18 / km) +30m 5:00 / km
shoes: Asics 1120

Slow jog back to Barts with Ali via the top of South Parks and route to lab, legs felt dead...

Mapping 1:45:00 [0]

More around Brookes, almost there now.

Cycling 51:30 [2] 17.8 km (20.7 kph) +190m

Cycle out to Brill, wind seemed against for most of it, standard killer hill at end.

Orienteering 40:00 [3] ***
spiked:21/23c shoes: Walsh Ultra

Summer Series at Brill, legs felt heavy from the off (probably from the cycle) and I didn't even try to keep up with the fast guys, just plodded round. One pretty big mistake at beginning of second loop (1 min) but otherwise pretty clean. Ran without compass again, might have helped a couple of times with exit directions. Nettled a little bit, partly my own fault for taking a rubbish route.

Feet slide too much in Walshes whenever the ground is uneven - going sideways across slopes especially.

Warm up/down 5:00 [1]

Brief warm-down jog with Chris and Jon

Cycling 52:20 [1] 18.7 km (21.4 kph) +100m

Back from Brill with Chris, slightly different route once back in Oxford, going round the ring road rather than through Headington. Not feeling too bad up the Barton hill which surprised me :)

Circuits 40:00 [2]

Circuits, r. knee hurting whenever put force through it, especially with quad related exercises. So plenty of stretching when exercises didn't suit. Muscles generally feeling a bit tired, not sure why...
