Last day of easter. Started early because of my DNF yesterday. Taped the living crap out of my feet so that I could run properly. Had a little wobble on the way to 1 being too low and was probably just slow on the way to 2 which is why I was caught 2mins by Robbie really early. We ran together for the rest of the course, which helped with confidence, and probably meant I pushed a bit harder. Made a pretty big bingle on 6 losing a couple minutes not checking my location when I came into the erosion gully. Really frustrated to lose time in the erosion detail seeing as I've done so much training in erosion gullies. Lost another 2 mins on the long control 14 with a really wayward bearing to a track. I think I was just making the map line up even though the compass was telling me I was going the wrong way.

Competition is always a great way to compare myself to the guys that are absolutely thrashing me and reflect on where I am in the grand scheme of things, as well as analyse which aspects of my orienteering need the most work. One surprising aspect I didn't expect to be lacking in as much as I was was my terrain speed. Looking at my splits it has become obvious that I'm lacking speed in the terrain and losing huge chunks of time. So maybe it's time for some specific training in the terrain aimed at increasing the speed I can cover the ground. The other issue is nav when I'm getting tired. I definitely start reverting to very bad habits when I'm tired and drop a lot of time. Great motivation! Hope to be fighting fit for Nationals in QLD.

Started out alright until 6 when I got completely stuck in some green and wasted minutes thrashing around which was incredibly frustrating. That got me in a sub-optimal mood for navigating well... which meant I made another mistake on 7, then Todd caught me at 7, ran together till 13 pretty well, but then he dropped me out of 13 and on the way to 14 my feet got really really sore from blisters. Shoes were sliding around my feet really badly which led to blood blisters on both my big toes and really bad calluses on the ball of my foot. As I was already having a shithouse run I called it in at 14. Sorta annoyed that I couldn't finish today.

Played it very safe today slowing down a lot coming into controls and stopping at every control to plan the next leg. I think I need a few solid results like today's to build confidence and start getting more control flow. Things to work on include general fitness and fine nav in the circle, as well as keeping the high map reading frequency when tired. I've noticed I don't read the map as much when I'm tired, so I usually drop a lot of time late on in the course. General fitness wise, I have sooo far to go, and I dropped a lot of time on almost dead running legs today. Happy with today though, I was up with the rest of the stingers, and I feel like I have potential to be a lot faster with just a few tweeks here and there as well as more time training.

Calf is feeling heaps better today after the run. Yesterday it almost felt like I couldn't run at all but now almost pain free. Whatever this niggle is it seems to respond to punishment.

Fastest split on the finish shoot. I'll take the victories where I can.

I actually have a theory that someone has put a curse on me so that I can't ever finish an orienteering race without making a completely retarded mistake which ruins my race. For evidence of this, look at every orienteering race I have ever done.. fuuuuuuuuuuuck

Left shin is has been hurting a little for the last few weeks but it seemed to elevate in pain after Sunday's race :/ So I've taken the whole week off and I'm hoping that I'll be able to make it through Easter without too much pain. Not sure what it is, could be shin splints?
