(sick)

Been busy with big assignments and drinking and such. Was holding the record for the mechanical bull yesterday at college for a while, hurts today. Feeling pretty rough due to chesty cough.

Running (Street-o 1 blackbutt) 45:27 [3] 8.81 km (5:10 / km)

decided to take it easy as I'd done a few days in a row and was starting to feel the adverse effects. A lot of the clues had me pretty confused for a good 10-20 seconds which made for a very stop-starty run. Had trouble seeing a couple of the clues as they were pretty small and it was getting dark. Good run though.

woot
meant to go for a long run today but didn't get time. Guess I'll have to do it on thursday.

Running tempo (Hospital loop) 48:50 [4] 11.2 km (4:22 / km) +100m 4:10 / km
shoes: Salomon s-lab

Same run as sunday but a bit faster. I actually feel like training is having some sort of effect on me. I seem to be climbing better and cruising pretty easily in the low 4 min kms. Feels nice. Head clogged up pretty bad. Looking forward to Streeto tomorrow hopefully I haven't overdone it.

Running warm up/down 5:00 [2] 0.6 km (8:20 / km)

Running hills (Sugarloaf up) 28:02 [4] 4.62 km (6:04 / km) +400m 4:14 / km
shoes: Salomon s-lab

Started from O'Donneltown road near the cemetery at West Wallsend. Felt pretty good until the really steep part with about 1.5km to go where I had to walk a few strides to let the calves recover before getting back into running. I like these shorter runs that feel more beneficial even though the distance and time spent running is low. Climbed about 400m according to garmin. Kept getting heaps of sweat in my eyes as it was about 35 degrees according to my car thermometer (not sure how accurate that is).

Running hills (Sugarloaf down) 21:56 [3] 4.62 km (4:45 / km)
shoes: Salomon s-lab

Trying to save the legs on the way down. Found a pretty cool downhill mtb track that goes next to the road for some of the way. Calves felt much better at the bottom than they had at the top that's for sure.

Note

Rest days yesterday and today. Did 3 pretty solid days in a row and felt a weird pain in my left shin which I suspect may have been the beginnings of shin splints. So I wanted to let it heal a bit before smashing it again tomorrow. Gonna go watch alex finish the fernleigh 15 tomorrow. Thinking of running it next year.

Running tempo (10k) 40:14 [4] 10.0 km (4:01 / km)
shoes: Salomon s-lab

Windy as outside which made it pretty tough. I lot of headwinds to plaŹŠ through. Air was really smoky too... Throat feels kinda weird after that run. I think they're burning off somewhere west of here, or the smoke from the lithgow fires is somehow all the way over here. Nice run.

Running warm up/down 8:00 [2] 1.0 km (8:00 / km)

Orienteering (Streeto- brickworks) 29:57 [3] ** 6.58 km (4:33 / km)
shoes: Salomon s-lab

First street-o in a long long time. Took a while to get into the somewhat unique mapping style and questions instead of controls but still went fairly smoothly. Route choice was a bit bad on one or two controls. Got 31 points. 4 behind Macey. Felt good running apart from weird pain in left shin. Maybe the 30 mins of stretching after yesterday paid off cause my calves didn't blow up like they usually do :D

Running tempo 1:17:10 [4] 17.27 km (4:28 / km)
shoes: Salomon s-lab

Run from uni to glendale via the railway track/bicycle/footpath thing and back. Pushed a pretty good pace. I've come to the conclusion that newcastle is really hot (a Canadian told me it was and Murray says Canadians are a pretty solid judge of weather).

Orienteering race (NSW Sprint Champs) 19:26 [5] **** 3.3 km (5:53 / km) +80m 5:15 / km
spiked:17/21c shoes: Salomon s-lab

I'm beginning to think that while my attackpoint log does look more impressive when I take longer to do a course as the bars are longer, that maybe I should rethink this strategy as it is leading to some annoyance in the results department. Smashed through the first 5 controls absolutely nailing everything with 0 hesitation, then completely didn't see #6 on the way to #7 (woo mp!) then up the stairs to 8. Route choice on longer legs seemed fairly arbitrary as differences amounted to 5 seconds either way. Still going well till number 13 where I spent 20 seconds on a slight navigational wobble and then up the massive staircase (Felt as if I was climbing some chinese mountain with a temple on top it was a pretty big staircase), then my calves just died hardcore and I struggled super hard through the rest of the race. When my body went so did the mind and my decision making became super sloppy and slow. After 14 just lost seconds on every control due to tiredness. Frustrating that I was ahead of both Barnsdog and Macey by about 20-30s heading into number 12 before my bloody calves decided to shit themselves again. Really really nice area I was pleasantly surprised by how cool the map was. Heaps of cool stairs and gardens. Course was cool too with some neat route choices. Nav felt awesome when my body was good but when it started getting tough my nav just suffered terribly. Sick of MPs and this one was a complete surprise to me. Ah well. Well done to Oscar for being ridiculous and doing 16:40.

Orienteering race (Aus relay) 1:35:30 [3] ***** 8.0 km (11:56 / km) +310m 10:00 / km

Stomach cramps calf cramps and hip cramps. Massive struggle. Electrolytes must have been way out of balance cause I had absolutely nothing to push with today. Disappointing but glad I managed to finish.

Orienteering race (Aus middle) 1:02:30 [3] ***** 6.5 km (9:37 / km)

Holy F#*k! I'm getting real sick of one or two legs absolutely send me from top 20ish results to last 5 results...
Started out real smooth apart from a wabble on #3. Went awesome then punched 7 an thought I'd punched 8 (yep) and proceeded to spend 8 minutes absolutely ruining my course on possibly the easiest control on course. Then fine if a little slower to 18z splits were consistent but had 0 confidence so I kept checking boulders that I knew weren't the control or some reason... Losing dumb seconds. Then #19 where I decided 7 minutes wasn't enough I should add another 11 minutes of errors to really f#^k my course up. Went too far left going down that hill and for some reason decided to ignore huge pointers that told me I was well off. So after that I was about 18 minutes behind where I could have been. Rest of the course was alright. I just don't get why every time I lose contact I make an error that is almost 20% of the entire race...

Running warm up/down (Before mid champs) 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Orienteering (Post middles venting) 30:00 [4] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Did a course on the map across the road from Andrew's needed to take my mind off how shit id run today. Was good.

Orienteering (Hard 5 from SL10) 44:34 [4] **** 6.57 km (6:47 / km)
shoes: Salomon s-lab

Decided to head out to mullion creek to do the course from State league 10. I think I may have edged out my dad by a little bit had I been there on the day :P Map is an old one mapped by local guy Basil Baldwin. Some areas of the map felt funny especially scale (or maybe I'm just really unfit) and rock. But it was nice to go for a plod, still being very careful not to aggravate the achilles. Heaps of trees had fallen over in recent wind in the pines which was interesting. Hopefully I go alright in the middle champs.

Running (Mount Canobolas Summit) 56:30 [3] 8.4 km (6:44 / km) +450m 5:18 / km
shoes: Salomon s-lab

Got sick of not running at all for so long so I decided to hit up mount Canobolas from the bottom to the summit. Only 4.2km from bottom to top but the route was super direct and 30% in parts. Stopped twice on the way up to rest the Achilles. Both lower calves felt a bit rough on the way up. Good to get out.
