Note

Medical opinion is Plantar fasciitis and further ' short term no running advised.' so hopefully not too bad

Note

The last OMM we did was the Howgills (2012?), a good first day but a poor second one after which I thought that I was probably getting too old/ fragile in particular as my knees make rough, steep descents a purgatory.

However I really do like longer runs I am quite fit and probably can manage 6 hours with a reasonable content of track/ benign terrain. SW Britain did not sound and proved not to be too bad. But the result was as 2012 one good and one poor day. This year they were caused by pre-existing conditions. Is it fair to inflict these on a partner?

I had wondered if we might treat this as an expedition rather than a race? That one was answered -its a race. So I still have open question about a future OMM.

Why is Dave so much stronger/ resilient ? …….(I) he always was when we ran elite in MMs (he was climbing in Skye or Chamonix not road running) …(ii) now he does lots of variety cycling (on-off road, gym etc. and lots more stamina SMM, LAMM, OMM lite…)
I was intending to do more hill walking (Cag and boots) but this year it has just been an intent

OMM Day 2
I would definitely not have run today had it not been a pairs event. As it was my knee recovered quite well but my foot got worse and rough terrain was not much fun. In addition the orienteering gods which perhaps favoured us on Day 1 did not today: on route to 1 a farmer stopped us crossing a bridge despite it being a viable footpath on the map.....we got snagged by gorse...... we got separated near a dodgy control site, we got cold in the strong wind after a glacial steep ascent (I had to put of Down jacket) etc., etc

So we were 57/ 240 with 270 points for an overall result of 34/ 240

We had two options at the start, the longer one round the valley heads (more points but longer) or straight to the main eastern ridge. Had I been ok the former would probably have been a 'no brainer', I favoured this thinking that we could skip controls and bail out along the path if necessary. Dave argued we needed to stay quite close to the finish. His logic was right and won the day. Hampered by our adventures we missed 2 controls (potentially 50 points). So it was our execution rather than the choice which was our issue.

However there is quite a lot of luck in these things as you just don't know what the terrain is like and from conversation the longer distance was much easier terrain and might have been better than our chosen toil.
