Middle distance race at the voice of America Metropark. Three days of the Flying Pig, and three distinctly different terrains. Not many trees, but tough running through the marshes and waist-high grasses and weeds. At the start, the temperature was in the mid-20's, with a brisk breeze and mostly open territory. I wore three layers on top, and two on the bottom, and the only part that was really cold was the thumb in my thumb compass. Really cold. It took a long time to warm back to life after the race.
Mostly I navigated pretty well, but had a couple of iffy route choices. The only mistake was at three, when I got a bit confused after seeing a control from another course. I thought about it, and corrected. it was really tough to get through the weeds. Then, on 6, I had to cross a watercourse, and put one foot in, which went down at least a foot, then pulled it out, because I couldn't see how deep it was. I continued south, trying to find a place to cross, found the place, which I should have seen earlier on the map. No problem after the cross. I could have had a better route to 12. All in all, I was ok with with the run.
Both here and in California, my navigation has been getting notable better. Orienteering is even more fun when you're doing well, especially in challengin weather. I'm glad I didn't have to spend more time out on these courses. Now I want to get faster, so I need a plan.
