9Round 32:00 [5]
ahr:120 max:142

Tough day at 9Round. I was in the red zone quite a bit, and mostly upper eighties the rest of the time. I found something I dislike more than Burpees--one-legged Burpees. The only move today that wasn't amazingly aerobic was the one I started with--three minutes in plank position on a big exercise ball, pushing the ball in and out with shoulders and arms and holding the rest of the body still. A long three minutes.

9Round (3130) 31:30 [4]

I'm still really upper body sore from Wed. night's workout. Four sets of 12 pushups, then 3 sets of each of seven different exercises with the big ropes. But I went to 9Round hoping to move the lactic acid around. Very vigorous, but the only really hard one was Russian kicks at he 8th station.

Dog Walking 22:00 [3] 1.2 mi (18:20 / mi)
shoes: Skechers GoRunS

After 9Round, the library, and recycling, ElRay and I took part of the trail by the high school. We tried to power walk the hills, and ElRay took a few minutes to stretch and roll around in the grass. She always looks so happy with it, that I'm tempted to try it myself.

Dog Walking 27:00 [3] 1.5 mi (18:00 / mi)

Spent some time sniffing and socializing, but did some speedwalking up the hills.

Workout 1:00:00 [4]

Workout with Jared. Lots of agility, then mostly upper body. We did a lot of work with the ropes near the end. Since I would like to get a little faster, we have finished the last two sessions with one-foot hopping.

Dog Walking 32:00 [2] 2.0 mi (16:00 / mi)
shoes: Skechers GoRunS

Still very hot here, but ElRay was desperate for a walk, so we had a shorty at Watkins Mill, mostly in the shade. I was trying not to sweat, and just as fall ragweed season arrived, I'm having an issue with the Nasalcort and can't use it. Not too bad with time, we saw two squirrels and a bunny, and had two water stops.

9Round 32:00 [4]

Not too bad except for Round 2. We were to do Turkish get-ups, which is holding a kettleball in one hand over the head and siiting on the floor, get up without using your hands and continue extending the kettleball over the head. Five on each side, and then ten mountain climbers and repeat the sequence for three minutes. It was a really long three minutes, and I have never enjoyed doing mountain climbers as much. Actually, I only managed once to get up without using my hands.

9Round 32:00 [4]

Didn't seem as difficult as usual, until I got to the last round. This was scissors kicks with toe touch, and the three minutes was about twice too long. Of course, I was already a little tired because we took ElRay to the doggie park really early before anyone else was there, and we did sprints up the hill for awhile.

9Round 32:00 [4]

Burpees between each round today and lots of leg work. After lots of sweating, I had lunch with an old friend I hadn't seen in about a year.

9Round 32:00 [4]

Another sweaty workout at 9Round.

9Round 31:30 [4]

We got home from the Katy Perry concert (it was awesome) around 1:30 am, and ElRay woke us up a little after 6 am with a squirrel sighting. I am really tired, so the workout probably wasn't as tough as it felt. I did spend 27 minutes in the target HR zone, so that was tough enough.
6 PM

Workout 1:00:00 [4]

Workout with Jared. I was really tired when I got there, and wiped out when I was finished. We have started working a little on speed, along with the usual other stuff. We finished with my pushing the sled down the length of the gym as fast as I could, twice.

We will be stuck with this 6 pm time for the next eight weeks.

9Round 32:00 [4]

Got my heart rate up into the red on two of the rounds. I haven't done that in a while. It was a good sweat session. Tonight we go to the Katy Perry concert. I have never been to a concert, so I'm pretty excited.

9Round 32:00 [4]

I did 9Round this morning after my allergy shot for the first time. Not too vigorous, but I still felt worked out.

Dog Walking 15:00 [4] 1.2 mi (12:30 / mi)
shoes: Skechers GoRunS

Took ElRay to Ruth Stocksdale Park in Liberty to practice run/walk. We did a short time, but I did more running than walking, which hasn't happened for a long time. Then we went to the Bark Park, where ElRay went totally wild. She came home and slept, but I didn't. Maybe lots of naps are what I need for that awesome energy. I have noticed that since I've started 9Round, I tend to sleep about half an hour more per night.

9Round 32:00 [4]

Lots of squats today, but otherwise not too bad for a Brian day. I talked with Angela about my HRM, and she reset it. It will be interesting to see how it does on Monday.
10 AM

Dog Walking 22:00 [3] 1.4 mi (15:43 / mi)
shoes: Skechers GoRunS

Took the ElRay out for a walk/run at Riverside Park after 9Round and recycling. She is doing well with learning commands "walk" and "run". We may try the dog run in September for my training.

9Round 31:30 [4]

This was a Burpee day. I hate Burpees. We did Burpees between all rounds, and several of the rounds included Burpees also.

My shoulders are really sore, especially the right shoulder. I think that this may be from vigorous weeding up in the raspberries. So I weeded again today for another hour and a half. It's about 2/3 done.

9Round 32:30 [4]

Felt good, except for some leg soreness, but had some bad coughing spells while working out. I ran out of my asthma meds on Monday, and called in the refill, but they were still waiting for the order yesterday.

I talked with Hannah about my HRM, and she told me to get my resting heart rate before I get up in the morning and they will reset.
10 AM

Dog Walking 28:00 [3]

Took ElRay over to Jesse James Park and we did the circuit. I ran some, and we did lots of sniffing and rolling around in the grass. She seems to do well with understanding the command "run".

Then I got home and did another hour and a half with serious weeding in the raspberries. This afternoon is quiet time.

Wednesday Aug 13, 2014 #

9Round 32:00 [4]

I think my HRM went goofy yesterday. I was working hard, sweating a lot, and my HR briefly went up to 73%. Most of the time it hovered in the 50-70 range. I know I was working harder than that. I couldn't beat yesterday's challenge with the deep squats, but I did better the plank wall touch and got 144 in 3 minutes.
3 PM

Workout 1:00:00 [4]

Worked out with Jared after having two weeks off for vacation. We worked on sprinting with agility drills, then alternated upper and lower body. My legs (all over, but worst in the quadriceps) have been really sore all day. Hope they improve by morning.

9Round 31:30 [4]

Today was pretty intense. I was jumping rope on the first round when my heart rate hit 100% which caused the trainers to come over to see if I was ok. It went right down, but I hope this doesn't cause it to reset me to a younger age again. It took off 20 years last time, and any younger would be ridiculous.

We had two challenges today. At station 3 we had to do a deep squat (touch the butt to a Bosu trainer) then come up and do a jab, cross, hook, hook, and keep repeating for 3 minutes. I managed 42. Then at station 9, we had to stay in plank position, and alternate hands touching the wall. I made 140, but was surely glad when it was over.

Yesterday I went to the allergist for my shot right after 9Round. I have to breathe out into this gizmo, and if it's under 250 (cc's?) I can't have the shot. That's only happened once, and usually I get between 280 and 300. But yesterday I made 320. Must have been the altitude.
5 PM

Intervals 22:00 [5] 3.0 km (7:20 / km)
shoes: Skechers GoRunS

Since I now need to work on going faster since my navigation has improved, I did the interval thing down the driveway. Sprint down, walk back, repeat 6 trips per kilometer. So today I did 18. I haven't done this for a while, but need to try to get it in about once a week.

9Round 32:00 [4]

Having not done 9Round for two weeks, I expected today to be hot and sweaty, and it was. It felt like intensity 5, but was really a 4.

Orienteering race 1:14:41 [4] *** 4.5 km (16:36 / km)
spiked:7/10c shoes: Skechers GoRunS

The terrain at the Round Mountain part of the map was even less distinctive than day 1. Lots of rocks and boulders like Day 1, but even less topographic detail. Going from 6 to 7 was my biggest mistake. This area had lots of campers, OHV's, and trails. I was following my bearing when I hit a group camping, and changed gears to walk around them. Then I got confused with all the trails, and had to relocate. I must have lost focus a little near the end, because I did a very sloppy job going from 9 to 10. But I did finish this course 4 minutes faster than yesterday, and it was 0.2 km longer.

Overall, I was happy with my performance. Only one major mistake each day, and I remedied them fairly well. Including both days, with difficult terrain, it was a good effort for me, and I really have more confidence in being able to orienteer. There was also quite a bit of competition for the 70+ age group.

Now I'm fired up to start running again, and get faster. More training!

Orienteering race 1:18:42 [4] *** 4.3 km (18:18 / km)
spiked:9/11c shoes: INOV8 Bare Grips

This terrain is technically difficult in that there isn't much in the way of distinctive features or topography, so here isn't a lot of route choice either. Mostly it's just set a bearing and travel.

I was super cautious going to 1, since I frequently mess up at the start. The only two controls that I had problems with were the leg from 2-3, just long and featureless, and a really bad bearing on 4 to 5. I'm not sure why I went so far west, but I knew when I had gone south far enough, thought about it, and went due east and right to the control then.

Breathing wasn't too bad, although I didn't try to do any running at altitude, even when on the trails. The hardest breathing was walking uphill to all three events, when I felt like the Little Engine that Could, as I went puffing up the hills.

I hadn't planned on doing the Trail-O; this was my first attempt, but I had to wait around anyway and thought it would be a good practice and also help acclimate me to the altitude, so I signed up for the recreational Trail-O, and only got 4 of the 16 correct.

The walk to the start was very long, and the walk back was even longer. I even got a blister on my right heel. I haven't had a blister with these shoes before, and typically get them on the left heel, so I don't know if it was just the very long walk, or if this is a portent of things to come.

Orienteering 1:09:00 [3]

I did part of the model today. Had a little trouble with number 4 and had to relocate. Going from 5 to 6, I walked around a rock and came face-to-face and about 15 feet away from a bull elk. He just stood there looking at me. I was pretty freaked, forgot all about control 6, and slowly walked away.

Then I went to 7 and finished. I was still shaking when I got done.
