Saw the doctor today and discussed my foot injury. I am to ice it for several days, and have a bunch of stretching exercises to do up to five times a day

We had the record high temperature for January today--76 degrees. I had to go to the park and try some running. I did about half/half slogging/speed-walking. My foot didn't hurt any worse when I finished than when I started. It really felt good to get out and about.

We got home from Florida last night and I had lots to do, but managed to make it to our meet at Blue & Gray. They put me right to work at registration.

Not my favorite site--lots of hills, rough horse trails, outdated map, and it rained this morning which made for lots of mud. Did well on 1 and 2, wandered around on 3 (lots of streams), spiked 5 & 6. Then, went west instead of north for 7. Looked around, and decided it was time to go in. Saw 8, but didn't punch, then punched 9 and finish. DNF for me, but it was great to get out in the woods.

Lots of slow walking today again Touring at the Florida Aquarium, then walking around the Tampa zoo. My left heel is hurting.

Totally screwed up. Had some problems with 2, so I had to relocate twice. A little time lost on 3. Spiked 1 and 4. Then, my brain must have been in lalaland. I thought I would cross a road with power line, but didn't, so then I was totally lost. Came on in before time was up after wading around through the mud. Bummer!

Day 1 of the Navigator Cup. Difficult terrain. Went too far right on No.3--may be distraction of lots of people in the woods. I need to always run my own race. After Control 5, I spiked the next 5, but then did a 180 mistake from the last control to the run in. After about two minutes, I realized I was going the wrong way. Lots to learn from the run, but a lot that I did right also. Although I was 2 hr 10 min, when I left, no one else from my class had come in yet.

Tried the model event at the Navigator Cup. Got mixed up in some bad vegetation at the start, but the rest went pretty well. Was not using my O shoes, so had to take some of the ups and downs pretty slow.

Tried Day 2 of our A-Meet on the Brown course. A little longer, a little more difficult terrain, and more climb.

Had to look for a few controls, but not very long, since my map reading was pretty good. Sometimes I veer left and sometimes veer right--not sure what that was about.

The course was 4.7 km, and the walk to the start was over 500 m up a hill. My hands got cold, and my compass thumb was so cold it was painful. Just started to get a blister on the left heel with my old O'shoes.

Ran Day 1 of the Brown course at SMP. Course was 4.6 km, but I went about 6.2. Checking out the parking and walking to the start added an extra kilometer. Good, except for a mess up on 6 which cost about 5 min. Otherwise, really muddy and slippery on trails from yesterday's rain, and wanted to avoid injury prior to next weekend. Felt strong on the hills.

Power-walked with Bob around Watkins Mill lake. Windy, but the snow is melting--warmest day in a month.

First workout of the new year. Lots of jumps, balance, weights

Looking back at 2012--I have made lots of progress.

Injuries:
Started PT in March for a torn tendon in my left bicep.
Hurt heel on left foot (plantar fasciitis?) feeling ok now
Started seeing a personal trainer in late July. Have made a lot of progress since then.

Orienteering:
US Champs March 9-11 in North Carolina. Finished, but not that great.
Flying Pig March31, Apr 1 & 2. Pretty good until last day, when I didn't finish
Navigator Cup Apr 14-15. OT first day, second day ok
Laramie Aug 25-Sept 2. Training was good to acclimate to the altitude. First day of A-Meet good, second day DNF
Cincinnati Nov 30 Finished second in the first Nite-O I completed. My headlamp conked out on the next to last control, but I finished anyway.
Dec. 1--Did yellow on Relay. First running since hurting my heel, and it went well.
Dec. 2--Ultra Long Terrible rain, lots of mud, but I made it anyway and got third. Cincinnati was my best in quite a while.

Looking to 2013

Continue with trainer. Build endurance, agility, balance, power
Hope to get weight down to 120.
More orienteering practice is needed.
