9Round 32:00 [4]
ahr:112 max:127 shoes: Skechers GoFit

A new trainer today, Drew. He worked with me quite a bit sparring. We also had two moves I hadn't done before--crunchy frogs and rainbow leg lifts in plank position.

Dog Walking 28:33 [3] 2.16 km (13:13 / km)
ahr:112 max:139 shoes: Skechers Walkers

Elray and I went to Riverfront Trail after recycling. We walked to the road and back since the weather was good. On the return, no one was in the new skateboard park, so Elray got to do a couple of jumps, a table, and a ramp.

Felt good enough today to do the CHOW. It was a squat jump with a double punch. I did 131 in three minutes.

Then I had a massage.

Workout 1:00:00 [4]

Weekly workout with my trainer. Pretty intense today--added weight on the sled which I pulled backwards.

9Round 32:00 [4]
ahr:118 max:143 shoes: Skechers GoFit

After not going to 9Round for two weeks, it seemed tough. My heart rate went up and stayed up. I put off this week's CHOW because I was breathing so hard. Maybe Thursday or Friday.

Orienteering race 1:37:52 [4] *** 1.7 km (57:34 / km) +50m 50:11 / km
spiked:4/11c shoes: INOV8 Bare Grips

Today I did terribly, but I'm not sure why I lost focus. I started out badly, and had to go back to the start to relocate. This set the stage for a horrible performance. Two was good, then for 3 I went to 4 and had to go back to 3. I couldn't even make it back to 4; instead I circled around and got back to 3. The second time around I made it to 4, and had no problems with 5 and 6. I did have a problem with 7, couldn't figure out how to relocate, and thought that I would probably be over the two-hour time limit the way I was doing this. So I set out for the last control, a long ways away, found it, and got a DNF. Why do I do pretty well one day, and then totally blow it the next?

The Long at Creek. The scenery here is absolutely beautiful. We had frost this morning, but it warms up fast at altitude, so the temperature was almost perfect.

Going through the woods here is something akin to running through a field of pickup sticks. Lots of hopping individual down trees, or climbing over or around some piled up ones.

Overall, I was satisfied with my performance, except for a dumb, dumb, dumb mistake on 5. And I knew better, too, but spent 27 minutes on it, and had planned a different route choice, but then didn't do it. The only other control I didn't spike, I came out about twenty feet to the right, looked over, and there it was. Today was a lot of fun.

Note

We left Wisconsin on Wednesday morning, drove like crazy and spent the night in Billings, Montana. Then, yesterday, drove to Idaho Falls, and walked around looking at the falls. They go on and on.

Today we were sightseeing on the way to Stanley. We stopped at Craters of the Moon National Monument and got lots of exercise. It is at altitude, and I wanted to get a little adjusted to the thin air before the meet. We did lots of hiking, including going up the side of a crater. Very aerobic. We also hiked out to the cave area, and went through the Indian Tunnel, a lava tube. A lot of the tube contained large rocks, so we were bouldering through, and I was silently thanking Jared, my trainer, for working all the muscles that help hold my knee in place. A really good change of pace.

Note

Today we all went down and kayaked the Brule River. My first time kayaking, and we did twelve miles. A kayak is much more comfortable than a canoe, and more forgiving with the rocks. Lots of fun, except for the area called Big Lake, which is shallow and calm, and we had a headwind to paddle against. Afterward , I had a blister at the base of my thumb. Next year I wear my fingerless gloves.

Note

Thursday we spent the day driving to Wisconsin, and yesterday I sat in the boat all day while Bob was fishing. So we got up before dawn today, and drove to Lester Park, north of Duluth. Bob's brother Curt, nephew Matt, and nephew's wife Hannah, were all running? the half marathon event at Grandma's Marathon. Matt had pulled a groin muscle about a month ago during training, so they mainly walked. Lester Park was about the half-way point for the half marathon. If I can get better knee braces, I might try it. I could run a mile, walk a mile, etc. They have been doing the half-marathon for about three years. The first year they did the whole thing. Even Bob got pretty excited about the crowd. Fun, just watching.

Workout 1:00:00 [3]

Lots of upper body. I pulled the sled across the gym and pushed it back, x3. And there were 90 pounds of weights on the sled.

9Round 32:00 [4]
ahr:110 max:132 shoes: Skechers GoFit

Started at Round 3, and ended on 2, which was a tough one with a medicine ball. Then Elray and I went to Mack Porter Park, but only had a short walk of about 12 minutes, so I'm not logging it.

Yesterday the strap broke on my Fitbit. I need to order a new one.

9Round 32:00 [4]

Lots of arm movements with weights at the first round. It was a long three minutes. The CHOW was total number of hooks on the bag in three minutes, and I did 690. Wow!

Dog Walking 27:05 [2] 2.1 km (12:54 / km)
shoes: Skechers Walkers

A really hot day, so I wanted to take Elray out early, but it was also a take-Linda-to-breakfast morning. Usually I go to Watkins Mill on Sundays, but I had to fill the fuel tank, so I went into Kearney and Jesse James Park. We skipped the last loop, since it was so hot for Little Miss Fluffn'Stuff. The breeze was good except for the low part on the southern trail.

There were lots of people in the park. They had put up a couple of dozen identical tents, a refreshment stand, many large vehicles parked around, including a large trailer labeled "Hot Showers" (cold showers would be more appropriate today). I asked at the refreshment stand, and found out this is a stop on the bicycle race across Missouri. Don't know its name, but it's Missouri's answer to the RAGBRAI. Very cool. If I weren't old and afraid of falling, it would be such fun.

The new owner had all the trainers in for a session this morning--only one I hadn't met--Pam and Brian have both been there for a long time. Anyway, it was like a cheerleader session with lots of energy.

9Round 32:00 [5]
ahr:119 max:139 shoes: Skechers GoFit

A hard workout day. About half-way through, the new owner came in and although I will miss Angela, the new owner will work out just fine. The CHOW this week was 10 punches on the bag and a Burpee. I managed 22 in the three minutes, but several other rounds were also tough.

Note

Today I went to the Rotary Park on the south side of Lake Jacomo, with Dick N., Dick L., and Angie. We did a little workshop thing on reading a compass, then an outdoor exercise using compasses, and a short session on orienteering and reading the map. This group is MHBC, but I'm not sure what that stands for. Something to do with birth injuries. Lots of kids. We stressed how this is a fun family activity. And inexpensive.

Note

Spent almost eight hours today at the YHEC (Youth Hunter Education Challenge) with Dick doing the Orienteering portion. We had seven groups of kids, a number of them are planning on going to the national event in New Mexico in late July. Tough test. Two different tests were using two different bearings and distances and finding which stake was closest in a bunch in about five foot spacings. The White event was taking a bearing from a white flag back to Jane, a stuffed possum, and finding the distance and bearing. There were six other stations with tasks such as archery, muzzle loading, hunter safety, and wildlife identification. This was our second year to help with this.
