Orienteering race 1:48:55 [4] *** 13.51 km (8:04 / km) +466m 6:53 / km
18c

Sage Stomp long. Very tough, physical course. Everything that happened in this race was good or bad, no in between.

1-4 good - feeling good, faster part of the map, good execution apart from a small hesitation on 2.

5-6 bad - lost 1-2 minutes on 5, but something seemed funky about it as evidenced by the fact that Damian and Graeme lost even more time than I did. Took a circuitous route to 6 and got unnecessarily bogged down in a green/marshy reentrant for a bit.

7-9 good - Felt like I nailed the correct route choices on 8 and 9 which is corroborated by the splits. Unfortunately both of those choices were the road route.

10-13 bad - AP thinks I lost time on all these legs but mostly I was just tired and going very slowly uphill. The course was set such that 7-9 took you way down the hill, then 10-13 were uphill legs slogging alllllllll the way back up and then some, to the highest hilltop on the whole map. I wasn't pleased with the course-setting at the time but in retrospect that was my brain attempting to justify my level of fatigue. Also fell and whacked my knee on a rock just before arriving at 9 which didn't help.

14-F good - More like fine than good but whatever. Recovered somewhat and didn't make any mistakes. I think I had the best time from 14 onward but only cuz most everyone else did silly things.

Really fun weekend hanging with most of the GVOC crew plus others. Fun orienteering, lovely weather, and no rattlesnake sightings.

Sage Stomp training course in the AM. Navigated well after starting out jogging; eventually picked up the pace a bit. They used some of the most interesting area of the map here, which was weird to me.

Orienteering race 40:33 [4] *** 5.36 km (7:34 / km) +121m 6:48 / km

Sage Stomp middle. I was having an okay race through the first 8 controls, then it felt like the heat got to me and I started making fatigue mistakes (9, 10, 11). I wish they would've used this area for the training course and vice versa.

Aw man, Chris Cornell died today. If there was a Mount Rushmore of Seattle music it would probably be Cobain, Hendrix, Vedder, and Chris Cornell.

Note
(rest day)

Ian and I invented a fun Sporcle-like game today involving info from flag counters on AP logs. First we tested how long it would take for him to guess the four states that no one has viewed my log from, then I guessed the two states missing for his. Took him 21 guesses, took me 9, so about even. We also guessed each other's top five most popular, which he nailed in a perfect 5 guesses while I had to use a dismal 12. Who knew Ian was popular in Ohio? The good thing about this game is it can be repeated ad nauseum for anyone with a flag counter and for however many categories/questions you can think up. Too much time on our hands?
