Event: WOC 2016

10 AM

Orienteering race 16:11 [4] 3.5 km (4:37 / km) +70m 4:12 / km

WOC Sprint qualification. Pretty crappy race. Took a bad route choice to 4 which cost me 20s (on the plus side, if I had gone the right way there I wouldn't have been able to say hi to my sister and brother-in-law) and made a huge mistake on the way to 16. Had trouble differentiating between what was OOB and not, and nearly ended up in someone's backyard before getting weirded out by the whole situation and going the long way round; lost ~50s. Should have been around 15min or a bit under.

Everyone here is fast at the running and the navigating!

Running 32:26 [2] 3.01 mi (10:46 / mi) +80m 9:57 / mi

Easy terrain jog with Hill, Ross, and Sam. The Swedish coastline is somewhat like the San Juan islands, only the islands are smaller, rockier, and more numerous. In general, Sweden seems to be like a Disney fairyland where everything is happy and friendly and nothing will act with the least hostility toward you - this includes plants, animals, and people. For example, I have seen three rabbits, each roughly the mass and volume of a midsize dog, because there is not even so much as a coyote in these woods.

Note

Have arrived in Sweden. The airports are crawling with Olympians right now; on my flight from Amsterdam to Gothenburg was a Dutch woman decked out in TeamNL Rio 2016 gear. After a little covert sleuthing, I was able to positively identify her as Ellen van Dijk, who just finished fourth in the Road Time Trial, missing a medal by some 11 seconds. Reason(s) for coming to Gothenburg unknown.

In the Frankfurt airport, my sister and her husband saw an unidentified Chinese team, as well as what appeared to be the Georgian boxing team, complete with lots of cauliflower ear.

Cycling 21:11 [3] 6.19 mi (17.5 mph) +25m

Off to Sweden tomorrow! I have now climbed to the top of my goals pyramid; it has taken approximately 3.5 years. Early on I never thought I would make it this far, so just want to say thanks to everyone who has been a teammate, clubmate, training organizer, training partner, competitor, supporter, critique-er, log reader, or friend. Every one of you has helped me along the way.
