Running 17:18 [2] 2.19 mi (7:54 / mi) +30m 7:35 / mi

Jaunt up to the barbershop to get my hair chopped off. I almost stepped on a garter snake on the trail and freaked out. Snakes are so weird/fascinating! How do they move without having arms or legs!

Running intervals 21:22 [4] 3.03 mi (7:03 / mi) +15m 6:57 / mi

3x trail mile repeats, a couple minutes rest in between. Had to stop once for a horse and once for a small child, who somehow occupied more of the trail than the horse.

Running 18:05 [2] 1.99 mi (9:05 / mi) +10m 8:57 / mi

Homeward bound. I ran into Washington State 2A Cross Country champion and sometime orienteerer Devon Grove on the way out of Bridle Trails. If we can stick a map and compass in his hand full-time after college, watch out.
4 PM

Cycling 15:17 [3] 4.42 mi (17.4 mph) +15m

Roundabout to the library along the Kirkland waterfront. You can legitimately smell the Axe, even at 20 MPH.
5 PM

Cycling 14:01 [3] 2.46 mi (10.5 mph) +120m

I've been really happy with my New Workout Plan. So much so, in fact, that I'm the envy of all my friends, now I ain't gotta work at the mall again.

Seriously though, I've decided to do more intervals and other high-intensity sprinty stuff, and drop most of the "boring" mileage that real runners do that I don't like to do because I am not a real runner. I'm going to do three more weeks like this past one, at which point I'll be as ready as I can be for Canada.

Strength 27:00 [3]

I was planning to go for a run between matches, but the defeat of my beloved French has left me despondent.

Is there a less American activity than watching France and Germany play soccer on the Fourth of July?

Patrick's sprint, backwards with a forwards loop.

There are some truly fantastic World Cup quarterfinal matches coming up:
--Brazil v. Colombia: The atmosphere for this one will be just insane. Colombia's fans have basically turned their team's matches into home games, so we've basically got two host countries facing each other. Also, South American rivalry. Also, James Rodriguez v. Neymar. Also, lots and lots of yellow.
--France v. Germany: Ya gotta love any matchup when each country has fully conquered the other at some point.
--Argentina v. Belgium: Belgium is really, really good. In fact, this may be a case of the classic "best team v. best player" situation. How well can Messi operate against Kompany and the stout Belgian backline? Can he offset what Lukaku, Hazard, and de Bruyne are about to do to the not-stout Argentinian backline?
--Costa Rica v. Netherlands: The only match with a clear underdog storyline. It seems like the Dutch should have the advantage here, but you never know.
