Mercer Island 0-3 Bellevue. Last game of the season, which is great news, because it was the coldest game of the season. Unfortunately this was also one of the worst kinds of games as an AR - the kind where a coach is unhappy for legitimate reasons, but the center gets defensive and doubles down instead of making amends, and then you as an AR have to deal with it and try to walk the delicate line of placating the coach without tossing the center under the bus.

An excellent fall day, clear and cold. For some reason I think of this as a Denver day, though I guess it could be most places in the Midwest or Mountain West. Except I suspect those places might get colder than 50F.

From Tuesday night, Skyline 2-2 Eastlake. "Biggest game of the season," according to our assignor, who was at the game. These two schools are rivals, located maybe a mile from each other in Sammamish, which recently topped the Census Bureau's 2018 national study of "large" cities (>65,000 population) by median household income. At the high school level, affluence and strong soccer programs are highly correlated, which is an unsurprising bummer.

SEAAAAATTLE...SOOOOOUNDERS...

I saw two cats happily hunting small critters, and a dozen or more fuzzy black/brown caterpillars on the trail, most of whom hadn't been stepped on or run over. I think these caterpillars should have a good rate of survival, at least when it comes to accidental death - they are smol enough that the chance of random collision is low, while also being visible enough to be seen and avoided by even those traveling at relatively high speed like myself.

Here is my fantasy basketball team this year. I have missed the playoffs three straight seasons, which is unacceptable, but I feel I drafted a strong team. I suspect my players are for the most part relatively obscure to non-NBA fans; anyone who can name the team any of these players plays for (without cheating) wins a cookie.

Didn't really want to ride today but I did anyway, because it wasn't raining. Then later I saw two flashes of lightning, but they were a ways off to the north. Then right about when I got to the northernmost point of my loop, there was a big flash and peal of thunder that wasn't so far off, and I started thinking it might not be great to be riding around on an aluminum bicycle. Still, it didn't start raining till 5min after I was done.

This was a great idea, until it started pouring and it became a terrible idea. Still, there is a certain beauty and freedom in giving yourself up to the elements, like Bodhi from Point Break (2015 remake). Unlike Bodhi, I called in for an evac.

To Interbay for a couple GSSL (Greater Seattle Soccer League) games, men's open D1 - AKA the top level. These games can be hit or miss depending on the teams, but often they're some of the best soccer around short of NCAA D1, and dudes who get paid. Lots of 20-something ex-college types.

I'll fly a starship
'Cross the universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
I'll be back again
And again, and again, and again...

A nice and visually pleasing loop down to Kent, over to Maple Valley, and onto the back end of the Cedar River Trail with the gradual downgrade returning to Renton. I'd been eyeing a loop of this ilk for a while, and today was a lovely fall day, if a tad cold, and I didn't happen to have any plans after work. In addition, this loop looks like Botswana.

No photo description available.

My next goals are 2020 US Nationals and NAOC. I now know what works for me, and I will not get injured. I will train well, I will train hard, I will train smart. I will be ready.

Note
(sick)

A proper cold.

Thigh is quite bruised but already less swollen and painful, so shouldn't hinder activity for more than a couple days.

Loop 5 map

Mergeo's Whidbey Woods Checkpoint Run, at Putney Woods. This is a combo orienteering/trail running format where there are five loops (courses) and you've got a three- or six-hour time limit to finish as many as you can. Everyone has to do Loop 1 first, then the rest is up to you. Beforehand I had pretty much decided I'd do 1 followed by 4 and 5, as those were the ones advertised as trending more toward off-trail/orienteering, and then call it a day hopefully after about two hours.

Completed Loop 1 in ~23min, and Loop 4 in ~29min, despite losing about two minutes at 3 when the flag was a bit further into the thicker green than I was expecting. Then on the way to the second control of Loop 5, I was running downhill on a trail and kicked a small unseen stump, and went down HARD, taking major damage points on my left thigh, as well as jamming my right big toe what kicked the stump - my worst fall since the NAOC 2016 Long, where I smashed my knee on a boulder and went out for like a month with a deep bone bruise. I took a minute before determining that I could continue, albeit with somewhat subdued fervor, and was able to complete the long and tough Loop 5 without further incident other than going most of the way to 4 rather than 14 after leaving 13 - luckily it wasn't very far out of the way. I was pleased to spike most of the more rugged off-trail legs including 6, 10, 11, and 15. Missed my two-hour goal, but probably would have been right on it without the fall.

Unfortunately, I then had to come back and AR a soccer game, which was going to be interesting as after I finished a large knob quickly materialized on my thigh, and walking became difficult. However, in a comically fortuitous deux ex machina turn of events, we learned that the game was a continuation of a suspended game, so I only had to survive a minute of the first half, plus the second.
