Running 1:07:16 [3] 9.02 mi (7:27 / mi) +250m 6:52 / mi

Weave through Bridle Trails, down 122nd, back up 116th. Gorgeous out. Like, no-shirt tan-while-running nicest-day-of-the-year-so-far kind of day. Naturally, we are having a night-O. Maintained a fair pace but my body didn't feel great about it.

Cycling 45:41 [3] 10.51 mi (13.8 mph) +150m

Easy ride to Totem Lake and back with a stop at the library.

I decided to do a 5xK track workout today, which probably wasn't a good decision. Sometimes you think something will not be a good decision and it turns out you're right, but sometimes you're wrong. Either way, you never know till you do it, which is why you should always keep making bad decisions in life until you make some that are actually good decisions.

Tomorrow, or maybe tonight, we will see how bad of a decision this was. But even if it was, the results are close enough to my usual times that I've restored a modicum of confidence in all my fitness not being totally gone forever, and now I'm in a better mental state than I was earlier today. See - good decision.

3:21 (went out too fast)
3:28 (too slow)
3:29 (too slower)
3:26 (better)
3:23 (where all five should be)

My left heel is a bit irked for some reason after this workout. Maybe I need to run clockwise from now on.

Note

Hamstrings somewhat sore today (the good sore). They are not used to doing real things lately.

You know how American sportscasters/writers refer to a team as "it," a singular entity? As in, "If Seattle loses, it will be out of the playoffs." I've noticed that BPL commentators and other European sporting authorities generally treat the noun as a plural and pluralize the verb, as in "WHAT A LOVELY STRIKE, LEICESTER HAVE CRASHED THE OLD ONION BAG!" I've decided the European way is more quaintly charming and from now on I will endeavor to integrate it into the American lexicon.

And then you have weird idiosyncracies like how Tottenham Hotspur is AKA "Spurs" for short, but never *the* Spurs, while most team names follow the usual convention: the Hammers, the Toffees, the Black Cats. So your colloquially accurate sentence would be: "Spurs are rampant at White Hart Lane!" and now you've ended up sounding like a Russian who doesn't believe in articles.

Running! Real running! Not jogging! Without leg pain! My mood bounces back and forth like a red rubber ball on a daily basis based on how my calf is feeling. Yesterday wasn't so good but today I'm on top of the world!

Cycling 22:30 [4] 6.79 mi (18.1 mph) +107m

Morning commute. Today I ran back the old ride to my place of employment, before my place of employment up and moved like 15 miles further away. I can't find the Post-It with my old mile PRs on it but I'm pretty sure I crushed at least one of them.

Stupid calf is still being stupid. It has ONE job which is to not be injured all the damn time.

Cycling warm up/down 17:40 [2] 2.28 mi (7.7 mph) +10m

5 PM

Cycling 30:36 [4] 7.26 mi (14.2 mph) +201m

Evening commute home. Not as strong as the morning - ~10s slower than most of my PRs.

Running warm up/down 12:12 [2] 1.15 mi (10:36 / mi) +25m 9:56 / mi

So my friend had this pet rabbit and it ran away the other day. Yeah, really sad right? Because now it's just some bunny that I used to know.

WIOL championship at Camp River Ranch. I made two poor route choices which cost me some three minutes and without which I would have been victorious. Ended up in third behind Jourdan and, horror! Peteris.

I found the new venue and map to be really nice, while not quite providing enough interesting off-trail detail to be on par with Fire Mountain, Lord Hill, and Lincoln Tree Farm. Lots of trail around/cut straight decisions, which I weighed with a somewhat different calculus due to the fact that a number of trails were windier, sloppier and thus slower than the general norm.

Right calf very sore and uncomfortable - much more so than it should naturally be. I'm sure this is an echo of the injury.

Some Sprint Camp recap bullet points:

--One great race, three solid ones, one poor one, one garbage.
--My calf held up well throughout the weekend, although I am now apparently paying the price.
--Jourdan and I won the two-person relay. Huzzah! I had a clean first leg and lost some time on my second leg, but not enough to cough up our lead.
--Poor showing by the US men, with five Canadians ahead of the first American. But that was me, so I guess that's sort of good by default. There are not Canadians at Team Trials. Still, funny that many of us are in various states of injury and/or poor conditioning at this particular time.

Sprint Camp predictions:

Women:
1. Ali Crocker
2. Tori Borish
3. Emma Waddington
4. Tori Owen
5. Catherine Hoofd

Men:
1. Damian Konotopez
2. Jourdan Harvey
3. Graeme Rennie
4. Adam Woods
5. Ethan Childs

The field appears deeper on the men's side than in recent years; there are more than 15 who could crack the top five in any given race. It will be interesting to see what plays out. As for me, it will be nigh impossible to reprise my surprising successes from last year. I will have to be content with not coughing up any vital organs and running without leg pain. And having fun!

Felt slow and sluggish, but leg didn't hurt, even when I went close to full speed, so woo! Jourdan won again today, which means we finished the winter series in a dead heat for first, which means I half-accomplished my goal. But I'm not injured anymore!

Shin is feeling much better now, the area of acute pain is shrinking and the vague shooting pains have all but disappeared. I think I'm on schedule to be healthy for Sprint Camp, if not entirely fit.

Also, made the Performance team this year!

Truly, a miserable day for cycling. I hate being injured.

When I move on to the next realm, if I've improved the world in some small way I'll spend eternity riding a bicycle down a summery hill. If I've made the world a worse place, it will be raining.

Leg is still not feeling good...starting to get worried. And to make matters worse, now I have to wear a CSU jersey.

If one were to conduct an thought experiment on the parallels between the Seahawks/Cascade and the Patriots/CSU, one might in fact conclude that the similarities go deeper than mere geography. One might note that the Seattlites finally broke through in 2014 after years of futility and one or two near-misses, and the New Englanders have won several championships in recent times while employing various tactics of dubious legal and moral validity, clothing themselves in highly unfashionable attire, and in general being less debonair. Interesting, what one might conclude.
