My sister, bro-in-law, a childhood friend of ours, and myself planned to camp this weekend at Fort Worden SP in Port Townsend, so I figured I'd have an extra adventure and bike there. Stashed my stuff with sis, so was able to travel light with only my 3L water pack and the requisite basic essentials.

Took the ferry from downtown to Bainbridge, then through Poulsbo, accidentally missed a turn and ended up looping back through Port Gamble, then across to the Olympic Peninsula and up. The highways nearly always had nice wide shoulders, so while there was a lot of traffic it was never an problem. In addition, the route was pleasantly undulating; I was climbing or descending most of the time, but always on a chill grade and in short intervals. A really enjoyable ride. I estimated three hours moving time, so was pleased to manage it in well under that. I lubed my chain and did some basic cleaning and maintenance before leaving home, and my bike performed like a champion.

I started hurting a bit around mile 35; I wasn't overly tired, but my back began aching and for some reason my right hamstring had been feeling irritated for a while. Also I hadn't eaten anything to that point, so decided to stop for lunch at the next cafe - but I happened to be going through some rural areas just then, and had to suffer a few more miles in the pain cave before arriving in someplace called Chimacum and finally having a chance to acquire sustenance and stretch things out a bit. My body seems to rebel after being in the same position for more than a couple hours at a time.

I had not been to Fort Worden, but it is surely one of the best state parks, with some of the best sandy beaches I've seen in Washington, great views (for example Fort Ebey and Fort Casey are plainly visible across the way), and a nice forested hill with trails. Would be an excellent easy/intermediate WIOL venue.
