Note

After the race I boogied back to Michigan to assist with Nitrogaine. Does staying up all night to HQ and then prepping omelet to order making count as an intensive human trick?

Mr. W did a fabulous job with the race. I think it really has legs for some regional interest, and can't wait to do it again next year.

Noted that sleepiness in this venue was bad around 2:30, and then 8:30a. Took a caffeine pill around 3 that worked really well.

Adventure Race race 6:37:42 [3] 42.07 mi (9:27 / mi) +29m 9:26 / mi
slept:4.0

South Coast Adventure Race with Outdoorsmama! Trust me, her write up is far better than mine! It was great to see Funderstorm, Mrs Tiny, JustMe and I met Los Dobos I think for the second time? He may have been at WT when I was there. We got first female, 7th overall out of 86 teams.

Love teaming up with OM in her hood, second year at that. We started in the Point Pelee National Park, which is a place I just love, and have spent time at since my childhood, so it was special to be there. I was a little nervous about my performance in that I flew in the night before and got home around midnight and was out the door before five.

Enough background. The race started with a run to the bikes, maybe a few K. Then onto the bikes on to the next checkpoint at a park. It was great to get on the bikes and just go! Jen is perfect sized to tuck in behind me and we can move with her on the cross bike. She knows this area well, and although the map was on my bike, I knew she had the whole race memorized so I was able to check with her on best routes. In fact we moved along so well that I overshot CP3 and could have been bad without her holler! :)

Then onto CP 4...and there were some bottlenecks that we got around. Then about 10k in the rain and headwind out to 5 and the O course. One team of young dudes passed us (Brenda and Joe) on that ride. We had some hitchikers...and OM suggested they may want to pull a bit? :) That ride was brutal.

Got to the O, dumped bikes, transitioned, grabbed food and we went out with Joe and Brenda for the first few points. We saw Dobos on the way and noticed he didn't have a pack! We suggested might be a good idea....he went back for it. After a few points we wanted to go a different route than J and B, and it worked for us. Heard we flew through...we didn't check because we knew we had to stay on the move.

Just realized, I only ate crackers and a gu during this race. Ah, not good.

Busted out to the next O course. Only Brad Jennings from Ripkin was in front of us. Jen had the map here...and did great. The maze to get out of the campground was friendlier to J and B and Dobos.

Dobos went out with us, and tucked in with OM. Dropped him on a turn.

We barreled for the boats and learned about the big time portage. I shouldered for the first bit, but not sure if I had it positioned right. Got in the water and soldiered on! Few teams caught us on the boats, especially at 11. I think the point was a bit north of the due west that was on the map...the first 10 teams or so struggled finding it. That's where we lost the 3rd place...bugger. But, 7th is so not shabby.

Love, love racing with OM. I had so much fun and felt super strong all through and at the end. Rob Pula even quipped, "You could go out there and do it all again, couldn't you Barb?"

Yes, oh yes I could.

There is some serious mountain biking out here. Discovered the trails last night on my walk, and then grabbed some of them with bush whacking this morning.

Felt like a bit of a slog...at a meeting out of town this week and breaking all of my food rules...it's delightful--but I am paying the price!

HR wonky--maybe tighten strap?

Yesterday I forgot to mention that I saw two sand hill cranes and what looked to be a baby-teen fox. It was the size of a beagle.

Hmm, the data is on the watch, but not transferring. Traveling for work and used the treadmill at 12%...intervals of 3.5 mph and 5 mph. Walked the trails with coworkers tonight...will run them tomorrow I think.

Cool down...played with different slower speeds to see how HR ranged in last 7 min
