after watching Ondrej smash it yesterday in the ultra, my head was in a funny place for this... i was basically thinking of it as a sprint instead of a 3hr race. Pinned the first 4k out to pulpit so i could rest as coming back was slower in traffic. Felt good across to GrandCanyon and found myself taking an easy pace on the VERY technical trails down until someone flew past me and i was reminded i was racing. Was passed by 6 or so people in the technical valley (which was expected) before passing all of them again at the base of the last climb. Became a very sluggish walk from about halfway up the climb, but mainly because i had no marker for how far was to go. once i heard the cowbells from the finish, i found i had enough energy to run up the last bunch of stairs and to the finish.
Happy with the result, mostly very happy with getting the last week of preperation right. intervals through the week felt right, then upping the eating and drinking 2days out so that i didn't have to drink/eat much the night before and morning. Only had to drink about 1.2L water and 3 gels the whole race (although could have done with another gel).
As always, legstrength should be my focus for the next 6 months.
Bit of a neck twinge, nervy right side, just above shoulderblade near spine. I think its from a combination of SUP, and using a computer at a wierd angle at home. should be fine in a couple of days
