Vitruvian Half Ironman - Race
2nd triathlon ever. Beautful venue, and a very strong field... most people there definately looked like triathletes... a lot of Ironman tatoos everywhere...
Swim leg wasn't great, and actually found myself quite panicky, which i think came from the cold of the water, which i wasn't really ready for, and having to rush to the start line (i barely made it in time for the gun!) and only having openwater swum once before :S By the time the second lap came around, i was a lot more relaxed, stroking longer, breathing better, and following people which meant a lot less veering to the right (i reckon i was about 15 metres away on multiple occassions...
Bike wasn't terrible, but actually felt a lot weaker than those around me. I definately want aero bars if i ever do another tri, if for no other reason than to not have the excuse. I'm pretty sure i was the first bike in that didn't have aeros which i'm pretty happy about.Wasn't really sure about my pacing, so will need to scope that out before the next one. Was quite windy, which prob affected times.
Run felt pretty hard right from the start, although i could tell straight away i was gonna make a lot of time on the people around me. Started out strong but faded... didn't fade TOO much, which bodes well for the marathon, but was a good test. strong winds from the west meant that a third of the run was into headwind, and a third into crosswinds, which definately made it a bit harder. Relaxed/slowed a bit in the last 5k as i knew i had sub5hr in the bag. sub1:30 is a bit misleading, as it was actually about 600m less than a half marathon i think.
Very happy with result, where each leg amazingly matches my predictions/goals to the minute! Think i could probably scratch a fair bit of time off the bike leg in future, but otherwise pretty solid.
