Long and slow along the white cliffs of dover. spent a lot of time stopping to take photos, which probably replicates the stopping and walking i'll be doing during the ultra at different times. Struggled with heat and hydration a bit, but beatiful scenery to cap off a weekend
With anne away, i decided to go full epic this weekend. Rode from London to Dover solo and stopped for orienteering half way. Great lanes (maybe a few too many country lanes) and the road section of the pilgrims way was fantastic. Riding with a backpack is painful in the back 140km all up
Dover, however, is a shithole, except for the bnb i stayed at, which was nice enough.
oh and i got stung by a bee in the face while riding! how fun is that!

1st time day orienteering in Trosley Park I'd ridden 50km to get there, and still had another 90km to go to Dover, so didn't go FLAT out. Did find myself overtaking people with mapreading at one section, purely because i was using the little key for each control for the first time. Still not using a compass... probably should do that next time.
map-reading overall was a bit inconsistent (as can be seen by the splits) My interpretation of a "depression" cost me on 2 and 3, and on 16 i mis-interpreted a path (although i should have known that on this map only clear paths were mapped) and also saw a gap in the fence which turned out not to be a gap, just bad fence which put me off bigtime.
There was this one bit that was marked as deep forest, and a blackline with black dots (which i now know is an earth wall) and the description said it was on the forest side of the wall... so i ran through the forest to get there, but there was this horrible, head high blackberry hedge. the control was literally on the other side of it, so i tried to just run through. it didn't really turn out too well, and i have scratches all over me. now i know an earthwall is not impassable, and should have just gone on the track on the other side.
Result - 6/21. Getting better, but there were a lot of slow oldies at this one to make me feel good, although one kept seeing me at each control basically walking as i made map mistakes lol

10km time trial PB! PB! PB!
GPS was a little off, but this was still around 2 mins quicker than the last time i tried to nail a 10km. will update with a good estimate of exact 10km time tomorrow.
beers late last night must have helped!
EDIT - i'm logging my new 10km PB as 38 flat and 5km as 18:52 according to gpsies distance.

Sooooo it turns out you need a compass to orienteer... especially at night... on open terrain.
Given that i didn't have one, i'm pretty happy with tonight. I mad a lot of mistakes, and could have run faster, but learnt a lot
1. the numbers on the control correspond to the number on the legend 2. use a compass 3. i need to memorise the legend a bit better... there was a couple of brown dotted lines which i now think were seasonal streams? i came across one and thought i was somewhere else which was marked as marsh... also, fences and trails.
Main mistakes - i went from 3 to 4, and thought i was at 5. didn't swipe though. (i went wsw instead of nw and got orange and white mixed up) -exited 18 north instead of west - relaxed on the last 3 controls and made little mistakes not tracking as i ran.
