Orienteering (Nobscot Night O) 1:37:53 [2] ****

Still not 100%, but feeling a lot more myself that I was a few days ago.

Not a particularly good race, but considering this was a Night-O, I guess it could have been a lot worse. Most of my mistakes came from expecting to see things that I just didn't see. I've been thinking about investing in a brighter light at some point. My plan was to take easy routes involving trails. Unfortunately, in the dark it was really hard to see the trails, especially when they are covered with leaves. I crossed over several without even seeing them, and it was easy to mistake an open section of the woods for trail. I ended up re-adjusting my plan a couple times when I realized I missed the trail.

Running 25:00 [1]
(sick)

Still feeling bad, so I started out walking half an hr until I felt well enough to jog a little. I think (hope) I'm over the worst of it at least!

Cross-Training (Biking) 40:00 [1]
(sick)

Sick and swamped with work. Ugh. I went for a short and easy bike ride today. I'll probably run again tomorrow, I'm feeling a little better and I made a lot of progress on various assignments.

Orienteering 1:53:00 [3]
(sick)

My cold got worse overnight, making it hard for me to sleep. I got up in the morning pretty groggy and I felt like I was sleep-walking as I got ready to race. I felt better once I started jogging and warming up.

Well, I don't really know what to say about this course. I was looking over my course later on and figured out a little bit where I had gone. Basically, I just missed my second control by a little bit to the right and then after that had a really hard time relocating--- spiraling farther and farther away and getting more and more confused. I kept guessing wrong as to where I was. Oops. I eventually bailed out to the trail and tried again. If I'd been watching my compass closer from the start I would have had a lot better a time with this control. At least I learned, and the rest of the course went pretty well. I took good bearings, was careful to line them up with features in the woods, thumbed, pace-counted, and read some pretty subtle contours.

...And back to school. I had a good time this weekend, and I think so did the other Olin students that came with me. At least I'm doing contour plots in vector calc, so there are some correlations to orienteering.
