Orienteering 4:37:00 [3] 13.0 mi (21:18 / mi) +2500ft 18:02 / mi
shoes: Altra LP Blue #2

CPs 57,27,62,12,11,32,56,55,25,48,50

Tracker shut off 3 hours in for some reason. Started at 0500 for my 5 hour leg. Rained off and on throughout the day. Brain wasn't quite firing on all cylinders, and I abandoned 4 CPs that I looked for. Picked up a few off the road enroute to the SW corner of the map. After 12, I overshot 24 in a cluster of reentrants and bailed back to the road. Also ditched 3 and 7 without committing too much time to them since they were worth so little. At 45, I ended up on the trail to the east and knew where I was (only ~250m from the CP) but didn't want to go down and back up to retrace my steps. I hadn't been able to eat much and just wanted some hot food. Picked up 50 near the finish and called it a day. Kicking myself a bit for leaving 45 since I had plenty of time, and it cost me 2nd place behind JayXC. Ended up 3rd OA and 1st female. Glen got the most points but came in late, ending up 5th. I really can't say enough good things about this race. The park and Rod & Gun club were the perfect venue. Plus hot food and unlimited Cokes in TA every time we came in! Very intimate setting with a group of solid orienteers. Check out a CNYO rogaine!

CNYO Regaine at Letchworth State Park. Traveled with Glen. Pretty cool concept of a race in that this was 3 legs, each with a work and rest period. Due to the dangerous cliffs in the park, they ended up instating a dark zone from 10p-5a. This guy isn't complaining about extra sleep these days :) It was staged in a small field owned by the Rod & Gun Club where we could camp and hang on our breaks. I decided my format would be 6hr run, 2hr rest, 4hr run, rest overnight, 5hr run. Glen did the same but with a completely different route. I chose to do the longest distance section first since this was the longest leg and would involve a lot of road running. I attacked 40 on the way out but the "terrace" clue was tricky since there were a lot of flat parts here, and I went down to the road and continued on my course. Found 40 on the way home from the bottom with no problem. Crossed the footbridge and into the main park and was immediately struck by the beauty of this place. Massive gorge with tons of great views and cool features within the park. I guess Letchworth was voted a best state park in the country last year. #worthit. Definitely the best leg of the race. I felt really connected with the map, which was a gorgeous 1:20k basically full LIDAR map. I tried to contour from 41 to 47 and didn't like it, so I picked it up on the way back. I hadn't gone far enough to get to 47. Turned around at 13. After a small loop there, it was a long slog back to the footbridge crossing, with 3 CPs along the way to TA.

Orienteering 3:49:59 [3] 12.1 mi (19:00 / mi) +2425ft 15:59 / mi
shoes: Altra LP 3.0 Red

CPs 63,52,58,29,31,38,46,51,61,26,8,39

Started Leg 2 at 1800, so 2 hours of darkness. Went N then a CCW loop to the W. Chatted with Glen for 10-15min as we both went the same way on the road. I ducked into the woods earlier, and he continued further for a 60 pointer. Burned a few min at 58 thinking the CP was on the cliff above where it ended up being. Cleared everything in this section that I went for. Skipped 6 and 4 in lieu of higher value CPs. Came back to TA to a hot dinner and a decent but short night's sleep.
