Note
Saw a local production of "Other Desert Cities" last night. Spur of the moment decision to go. Excellent cast. Well written.
Here's a funny coincidence. There was a satirical reference in the play to the daughter writing an article about Paul Bowles' favorite haunts in Tangiers for Travel and Leisure Magazine. And just that same day in the NYTimes in a article about French President Mitterand's "illegimate" daughter it mentioned that she was now married to a documentary filmmaker who had made a film about Bowles. Now Bowles is not really well known these days but in his time he was a prominent intellectual and ex-pat. His best known work is the novel, "The Sheltering Sky". So what was interesting to me is that Bowles, for all his globe trotting, is buried in the Lakemont, NY cemetery north of Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes. Lakemont is a little hamlet, not even an official town, with a population of about 100. It is interesting to me because my Mother and Father are buried not 20 feet from Bowles, in the next row.
