In the cemetery contemplating mortality. Took a couple of detours to add hills. Ran past a president's grave. 53 deg, overcast.

Still working on the Emery Sprint map. In the woods today checking stickers, and reentrants. Found a few more rootstocks.

walking 31:00 [1]

Time to slowly get back to training. I figured a walk was a better bet than a run today.

(rest day)

A well earned rest day. I hope the other members of Buffalo Wing Nuts are doing the same.

RAID the Hammer near Hamilton, Ontario. Great event. We (Dave Levine, Patty Lyons, and me) finished 6/10 in Masters and 30/74 overall. I was dragging at the end. The climb was brutal. Only estimated above. Loved the vintage HKF map, especially the unconnected contour lines. Didn't mind the jog through Ancaster but was glad I wasn't wearing O-shoes although they would have been useful in other places. Didn't spend enough time looking at the waterfalls. Thank you thank you to Patty for carrying the SI stick and actually incurring the climb to visit and punch in at all the controls. (Though we were only 50m away, it was usually uphill or downhill.) Thanks to Dave for leading the way. You can check his log for navigational details (dlevine).

Felt like I was getting cramps in my thighs about halfway through and was concerned it might take me out. Had never had cramps during any event before. Didn't turn out to be a problem. Used one gel each hour. Next time (if there is one!) will try 50/50 gatorade and water in backpack. Might try food more solid than gel too. Also was concerned about getting hurt because 1. the footing was really bad in places, 2. the experience I'd had at West Point earlier in the year. This all slowed me down I am sure but I was able to keep going - albeit unenthusiastically at times.

Afterwards had no problems with joints. Not even L-knee. Only a little muscle soreness in thighs, no cramping at night. No blisters. PF was worse in right foot but not really out of line considering the event. Used 2 ibuprofen right afterwards, 2 before bed, and 2 first thing the next AM. But that was all.

Actually thinking of trying to talk Ben into doing the Snowshoe RAID in February. Heck, it's only 3 hours in duration.
