Orienteering 2:12:43 [2] ***
shoes: VJ Falcons 08

Taking down the map hike markers in Chestnut Ridge Park with Greg. A really nice day, sunny and cool. Started out wearing gloves but took them off before long. Ran on flats and downhills. Mostly walked on uphills. Stopped to search for and then take down the markers, so logged the intensity as a 2.

Note

After breakfast went to the laundromat to wash the towels and sheets. Got to Penn Station by noon. Found useful elevators to get in and out of the subway. Lunch at Fridays. Train boarded at Track 7W. Left on time. Nice trip back. Train on time the whole way. Enjoyed my contraband Guinness. DId not enjoy loud talker on cell phone. Dogs were happy to see us. Adam did a good job taking care of them in our absence.

Note

Went into Manhattan. Had lunch at diner at 14th and 9th Avenue. Toured the Highline. Spotted Colicchio's new restaurant. Enjoyed architecture by Nouvel and Gehry. Zipped through the Chelsea Market. Walked down Hudson to Houston Street and over to the Angelika where we were just in time for the 3:00 showing of "Greenberg" which we enjoyed. Back to Bklyn where we had dinner at Henry Public. Very nice and fun place.

In Brooklyn. Ran down Clinton to the track in Red Hook. Once around the track which is a nice one. It is right by the Ikea. Then ran back on side streets close to the harbor and along the waterfront under the Promenade on Furman where the new park will eventually be. A very industrial route and very cool.

Note

Installed Ben's air conditioner which involved a trip to the hardware store, scrounging for pieces of wood on the street and a trip to a drafting supply store. Rewarded ourselves afterwards with an outing to Coney Island. Walked out on the pier and up and down the boardwalk. Back in the Heights had dinner at modest middle eastern place, the Fountain Cafe, and then dessert and champagne at Tazza.

9 AM

running 34:38 [3]

Fun run through the streets of Brooklyn to Fort Greene Park. Up the hill to the monument at top. Lots of dogs running loose chasing balls, having fun. Better route back on Lafayette and State Street.

On warm-up walk passed an NYU film crew on Ben's street shooting a student film. Pretty big crew, all students. Street is blocked off and parking has been appropriated.

Note

St. Patrick's Day and you could tell by the larger number of people wearing green. Headed into Manhattan for our outing to Central Park. Had dogs at Gray's Papaya on 72nd. Coconut champagne, yum. Walked around parts of the park using the orienteering map and identified a couple of monuments. but mostly sat and read and gawked at the New Yorkers and their dogs. Were mistaken for New Yorkers ourselves by a couple of nice old ladies. We started talking to them when some cute dogs stopped for attention. Funny how dogs serve as a social lubricant.

In the evening stood on line to get pizza at Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge and then enjoyed a fabulous view of Manhattan after dinner.

Tuesday Mar 16, 2010 #

Note

Strolled around the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and observed lots of buds and plants trying hard to bloom. The place will be spectacular in a couple of weeks. I'd like to come back to see the cherry blossoms in bloom. Saw the Brooklyn Central Library which is a fine building. Did a little loop in Prospect Park and headed through Park Slope to one of the avenues (7th?) and back over to Flatbush to catch a bus back to the Heights. Had a late snack (no lunch today) in Tazza, a local cafe. Very nice. Then nap time and a late dinner at Bocca Lupa before a stroll home.

running 34:17 [3]

Back and forth on the side streets of Cobble Hill between Hicks and Court. Lots of nice brownstones. Cute shops on Court. Found the nearest hospital emergency room. Also spotted the art cinema and the local library. The sun is finally out!

Note

After the moring walk took the #63 bus to the end of the line in Bay Ridge. Saw some toppled trees on Shore Road. Walked around a bit and got a bite at an Irish pub, The Bally Bunion. (St.Patrick's Day in two days.) Took the #37 back to downtown Brooklyn. Browsed in the Barnes and Noble. Picked up some salad at Key Foods for dinner.

walking 53:00 [1]
shoes: Asics GT 2140

A brisk walk around Ben's neighborhood in Brooklyn. Checked out progress on the new Brooklyn Bridge State Park, saw a lot of cute houses and brownstones, views of Manhattan, a tiny cafe, the local dog run, etc. Spent some time gawking not walking.

Sunday Mar 14, 2010 #

Note

Walked over to the Transit Museum and got what amounted to a private tour since we were the only ones who wanted one. Neat old subway cars downstairs. Then got a bite at Clark Street Diner and back to Trader Joe's to pick up supplies for the apartment.

Saturday Mar 13, 2010 #

Note

Took the Amtrak from Buffalo to Penn Station in the rain. #2 subway to Brooklyn. Walked in the rain to Ben's place. Apparently a significant storm over much of the region but it didn't affect us.

Ran in the cemetery. Forgot the ipod so tried to amuse myself with a topology question. What is the longest route that can be run on the cemetery roads without crossing paths or retracing routes? In and out of a crossroads in unique directions are allowed. I will post the map later if I get a chance.

36 degrees, Winds N at 6 mph. Cloudy.
