Orienteering race 1:08:50 [3] 7.3 mi (9:26 / mi) +350m 8:12 / mi
shoes: Icebug

Long Course. Red (M40) This was a little better than the previous two days. Also a cooler day, less fogging. (I took my little chest fan, and used it once on the long uphill to 7, worked nicely - but usually would not have time to fiddle with it). A few 2-minute bobbles here and there. Lots of standing still to read details around the controls. I felt good physically. Had reasonable energy to the end. Ended up 4th, not too far behind 2nd (Jeff).

Overall there were really nice courses all weekend. The areas are superb - challenging with lots of detail.

Orienteering race 51:22 [3] 3.52 mi (14:36 / mi) +200m 12:24 / mi
shoes: Icebug

Relay, mass start. Humid, overcast, dark. Same issue as yesterday with the map, but this time even worse. The control codes were printed with the numbering near the circles, which made it even more difficult to find the course on the map, given all the darkish features. The start triangle and the 1 of # 1 were badly obscured, so I spent the first 3 minutes trying to find the course, eventually worked my way back from 2 to 1 to the triange. Ahh! Of course I lost contact with the people upfront doing this. Then a serious istake to 2 - came too low and then mistook the reentrant for the stream - I was not alone doing this...
Then serious fogging of the glasses from 3 to 4, so missed 4 entirely and had to relocate (literally) by the trail N of it. Not a nice experience during a relay.
The rest was fine, just orienteering, not seeing contour details etc. Just going slowly.

Orienteering race 1:00:33 [3] *** 3.5 mi (17:18 / mi) +220m 14:28 / mi
spiked:10/16c shoes: Icebug

Westchester Challenge A-event. Middle distance. Hot weather in the mid 80's. I had considerable problems: Poor route to 2, 4 (lost 4 mins), 6 (1 min),
route to 10 (1 min), 11 (took first stone wall,...2 min), 15 (1 min).
I had a difficult time reading the details of this map. The lamination made contours and point features fuzzy. The coloring of the map is generally too dark. It was difficult to see the course on top of it all.

Trail running 44:20 [3] 4.6 mi (9:38 / mi) +50m 9:19 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

I tried a morning run, 1 hour after oatmeal. Once the summer heat kicks in, I will have to do this more often. After first mile warming up, continued with a good pace to the end. Second mile was 12+ minutes due to losing the indistinct trail connecting from Adam's former property to the Surrey - W Foss Farm area. Needed to get home for grandson sitting, otherwise would have gone for about 6 miles. Refreshing!
