Trail running 1:20:00 [2] 8.0 mi (10:00 / mi) +80m 9:42 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 101

Went out with no plan, but I felt good so looped around the trails betw Surray Lane and Highland House. Some of the lesser groomed trails have become nearly "after winter" invisible, so ended up looping on and off trail, and eventually decided to run several of the hills in pursuit of boulders, of which there are very few. Then afterwards, 15 min. with Jena around Spruce Hole. Need to get some mileage under my belt for spring races (road and O). But I do miss the snow.

Swimming warm up/down 16:00 [2] 0.25 mi (1:04:03 / mi)

Pre-breakfast warm-up swimming ;losening shoulders and back.
9 AM

Skate Skiing warm up/down 15:00 [2] 0.7 mi (21:25 / mi) +60m 16:55 / mi
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

Warming up for the middle distance race. Very windy. Temps around freezing but warming up a bit. Old tracks were hard. Newly groomed ones much softer.
10 AM

Skate Skiing race 33:13 [4] 7.0 km (4:45 / km) +150m 4:17 / km
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

Middle Distance Ski-O Champs. Green course. Mass Start with forking announced. Actually a butterfly with 2 wings, where we had to visit the connector control 3 times. Was moderately nervous at the start; but able to take the lead to 1. Aims chased me and even passed me using shortcuts, that I did not see. Then I moved ahead to 4 (the connector) and did not see him for quite a while. Was not able to navigate cleanly to 1, 6, 11. I took advantage of some tracks that had been laid by previous skiiers to make fast connections between the groomed trails. It worked, although I had a near fall going over a reentrant. Connector trails on the downhills were extremely fast (hard pack !) and posed some danger. Had to definitely apply the brakes. A fun and exhilarating event. Ended up winning the course with 10 minutes lead to Sharon, and 11 min to Aims.
Thanks to the organizers for a fabulous, flawless fun weekend!

Skate Skiing 1:05:00 [3] 7.0 mi (9:17 / mi) +400m 7:53 / mi
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

Then various looping around the trail maze S of finish and watching and cheering the incoming finishers. I started to get cold so decided to do the "grand tour": Did each of the loops on the S end from top down to bottom, then the N-W side from bottom to top, then down and the again the inner loop to shelter, and back down. Encountered Ken who was on the way to check the N mountain "traverse", so I decided to join him. Tracks were getting soft on the sun-exposed side, but still quite hard in other places. Fun. I felt strong, and not exhausted from the race. I am afraid this might be my last skiing outing for the season, so enjoyed every bit of it. Nothing could be better than being on top of it all, 360 degree panorama shining through the very open woods on a bright cloudless late winter day!

Swimming 25:00 [2] 0.35 mi (1:11:28 / mi)

Morning lap swimming at the hotel after sipping the early bird coffee and reading the local newspaper at the breakfast joint of the hotel. Distance is guessed. Pool is about 12 meters?
10 AM

Skate Skiing warm up/down 15:00 [2] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

Up and down the warm up area. Wax seemed ok. Groomed tracks were soft but not slushy. Nice conditions!
11 AM

Skate Skiing 42:06 [3] 8.8 km (4:47 / km) +225m 4:15 / km
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

US Champs, "Long" distance Green Course. Distance taken from Jim's GPS route (did not bother to use my Garmin). Missed the first intersection to 1 (tried to be a good boy to start at my clock time - should have looked at the map carefully), had to turn back, then was not sure if I was on the correct trail among 3 or 4 possibles. Lost about 45 seconds. Then aggressively through the cuts to 2, back up same then to 3. Jeff lured my into the high road to 5, but then was going in the right direction to 6, which was South around. Good navigation to 6. The rest seemed fine, some hesitation around the field at 10 to 11, but I think I made the right choices, such as low around then back up to powerline, and back to 13. Was worried that rival Aims would ski strongly and error-free, so tired to ski hard where I could, but trying to be in control of navigation interfered a bit. In the end I won with a comfortable margin. Another nice event, and I am so glad to be here in the last bastion of snow in the NE.

Road Running 35:00 [2] 3.7 mi (9:28 / mi)
shoes: New Balance MT 101

Morning jog around Presque Isle. Found the town's bike trail. Roads were snow/slush covered so was glad to be away from the splashing cars.
2 PM

Skate Skiing warm up/down 35:00 [1]
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

Warm up (15 min) and cool down afterwards (20 min) for the US Ski-O Sprint Champs. Had to test the no-contact e-punch dibblers. Could not really hear the beep, so visual contact was necessary, which was challenging on a fast downhill.
3 PM

Skate Skiing race 14:30 [3] 2.7 km (5:22 / km) +50m 4:55 / km
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

Sprint Champs. Lots of hesitation in the first half. Very challenging to find my point on the map after each control. It got better in the second half as the course was a bit more linear with slightly longer legs. Great course. Aims beat me by 2 seconds. I am not at all used to sprinting. With one control per minute, there just did not seem to be a chance to ski to tempo, it was more like having to turn the brakes on for most of the course.

Rollerskiing 43:00 [2] 4.0 mi (10:45 / mi)
shoes: Nieflheim Skate

Around 'the block" with some hill double poling repeats (3) at Surrey Lane. 72F !! Birds are singing. Strange weather. Hard to believe I will be on snow tomorrow.

8 AM

Trail running 58:00 [2] 5.8 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance MT 101

Run to work (8:30 am) and back (5 pm). Steady (swift) pace but not pushing it too hard. Legs are strong from skiing.
6 PM

Trail running 25:00 [1] 1.3 mi (19:14 / mi)
shoes: New Balance MT 101

Very light jog w. Jena (on leash!) around Spruce Hole. (kept J on leash b/c she seem to have some indigestion from some dead meat she must have snatched up on previous run). Woods are nice and dry.
