Green - 15 controls, 5.5 km, 165 m
Actual Distance Traveled: 5.8 km
Actual Climb: 275 m
I would have attempted a longer course but I did not have the time to do so. As is it took me longer than I hoped it would (2 hrs) to finish the Green course. I didn't make any big mistakes. I think it was just slow going because there were lots of fallen trees, rocks, and other things that made the footing very uncertain.
I used my compass more than I sometimes do but it wasn't all compass work as I was also using terrain features and contour lines to navigate. All of the controls were on charcoal terraces. I got a little bit of help with some controls from other people who were moving faster than me.
I was a little surprised at how many people did not complete the Green course successfully. I didn't think it was terribly difficult navigation-wise. I thought it was difficult in terms of the physical challenge.
The weather was warm. I think the high was in the 80s. I worked up a good sweat just getting to the start. Every now and then it got a little breezy, which felt really nice.
