For the second time this season I arrived late on purpose. I arrived at Wheaton around 12:30 and started orienteering around 12:45. I was going to do the brown course but opted to do the green after looking at my orienteering spreadsheet and seeing how fast I was able to finish advanced courses at Wheaton in the past. I considered trying red but I wasn't sure I would be fast enough. Considering that I finished around 2:55 PM I think I made the right call.
I might have been a little over confident. The first few controls were very easy to find. None of them were hard to find but there were a couple (6/113, 9/121) that took me longer than they should have because I thought I was on one trail when I was actually on another trail. In both cases it was my fault for charging ahead and not being more careful.
In a couple instances towards the end of the course I chose to stick to the paved trails even though it was longer route.
There was one control (11/115) that I thought was hung in the wrong place. It was further north than it was marked on the map. I lost a few minutes looking for it. It wasn't wildly misplaced but it wasn't where it was marked on the map. I would have used a different approach and probably found it faster if the circle on the map had corresponded to where the control actually was.
The weather was beautiful, cool but not cold. I didn't stick around very long after the event. It looked like most people had already packed up and left by the time I finished. I had a quick snack of an orange and a handful of goldfish. On the way home I stopped at Methi Indian and Nepalese Cuisine in Wheaton for some Chicken Biryani.
