Window 3: U-V-Y-X-W

I didn't think I would have the time to finish four windows and considering how long it took me to do three windows I think I made the right choice. I wanted a challenge so I chose the windows that looked to me like they would require traveling the most distance. The only way I can imagine traveling further is if I had done A-E instead of F-J.

The first window involved a certain amount of climb. I dropped my map when I was punching F. I didn't notice I didn't have it until I got back to the road. I ran into and was passed by a fair number of other people while I was finding the controls for this window.

I made two mistakes, by my count in the second window. First I should have found L before M. Second, I should have climbed up from M to the tral and taken the trail most of the way from M to N. Instead I took the road most of the way from L to M. There was a fairly substantial climb up from the road to get to N. After N, I continued climbing up until I reached a trail and took that most of the way from N to O.

I didn't have any trouble finding the controls in the third window. U was a little higher on the hill than I thought it would be but I found it easily enough. I encountered a train when going from Y to X. Actually there were two trains. One was just sitting on the tracks and then another train came through on the on the other track. I thought about waiting but decided instead to head for the tunnel under the tracks. The moving train wasn't as long as I feared it might be. I probably added 5-10 minutes to my total time on account of that detour.

The trip home from W, the final control in the third window, was a long one (2 miles) and accounted for a quarter of the total distance I traveled today.

The Bumble was more physically challenging than navigationally challenging but that is frequently the case with Stumbles and Bumbles. I dressed a little too warmly for the event but it was very cold at the beginning. It wasn't long before I removed my gloves, unzipped my coat, and removed my hat. I had a little bit of car trouble getting to and from the meet. I managed to make it in one piece but the next day I had to get a new tire.

Overall it was a very good day of orienteering. I look forward to future events like this one but I'm glad that this is a special once or twice a year type of event.

I do wish that the club would publish the order and which controls everyone punched. With the epunch data it should be possible to do that. I'm not sure how much more work that would take but it would be nice to know, for instance, who did the same windows I did and in which they did them and the controls within those windows.
