Orienteering 2:00:00 [2] 8.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: INOV TERROC 330

We put out all controls for this meet this AM and picked them all up this afternoon. Rather than running the race, I just helped out Ben since this was his first event as a meet director.

Several of the controls had time drifted so much that the splits were useless. SI Simple could not produce results had to do it from the raw data. I don't understand what was going on since I had reset everything for the goat.

Very cold started controls placement in the dark temps in the low teens it warmed up to about 30 by pickup but the wind was howling.

Walking 38:00 [1] 2.82 km (13:29 / km)

I realized I have carried a snake bite kit for the past 15 years in my backpacking kit. I had never opened it until tonight. It contains knife blade to cut open the bit area. Then it has a suction system. Also has some iodine. A constrictor cord to cut off lymph system?

I'm glad I had the class before I ever used this.

Walking 15:00 [1] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)

Several of my clients moved their business into their house after the business crash in 2008. Many of them survived by cutting back on rent and other expenses. One of them lives close to me. Got to walk to my business appointment today. Cold and snowy today.

The treatments for a snake bite have changed since I last sat in a first aid class. For bites from snakes around here you don't ever want to use suction to draw out the poison - it does not work and destroys tissue and increases the risk of infection. Don't use a restricting band - it will concentrate the poison and destroy more tissue. Don't use ice it will destroy tissue.

One of the major segments of the AR clinic was wilderness first aid. Learned how to treat snake bites. Never realized in this area, the medicine given for a snake bite is the same for all the snakes so the doc does not need to know what kind bit you. Also never realized 60 - 80 % of the bites are dry - no venom. One big lesson always wear gaiters. Better to prevent than treat. The medicine is about $8,000 to treat a venomous bite.

Walking 19:00 [1] 1.41 km (13:29 / km)

I really enjoyed the adventure racing clinic on Friday evening - Sunday am.

Took a lot of notes and am going to go back through them. My brain was so crammed with information it was hurting when I left.

I think I will try my first adventure race this summer.

Orienteering race 1:59:45 [4] 8.0 km (14:58 / km)
shoes: Jalas - Spiked

Absolutely hideous performance on 3 to 4. 20 controls and 20% of my time spent on 3 to 4. Got a little lost going from 3 to 4, relocated and thought I had not punched 3. After running around with DA stamped on my forehead for a while finally settled down. I really did not have any problem except 3 to 4. Speed was still good for me. I am starting to have some issues with runners knees. I will have to figure this one out since there are about 40 possible causes of it.
