Kayaking 2:00:00 [1] 2.0 mi (1:00:00 / mi)

Vacation trip with our grandson (age 11) to Rough River Lake State Park. We took him kayaking today. A lot of time spent learning how to paddle etc. Its tough for him growing up with out a dad. He had a great time - good to see him laugh. The outdoors are so good for reaching kids & adults.

Orienteering 45:00 [3] 2.1 km (21:26 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2015

Setting controls. We had 43 come out and do the course at this tiny park. I had my usual new twist for the first three and then it was the usual off the bike path. We upped the map copies printed to 35 but still ran out. A lot of newer people, they enjoyed this park.

Note

Girl Scout HDQ's was Day 22 out of 52

Nice Day

Biking 25:15 [3] 5.0 mi (5:03 / mi)
shoes: Duluth Wild Boar

Redid disc brakes - rubbing noise still there. when I put the bike upside down and rotate tires no friction. Unclear what it is. Noise is there when coasting.

Biking 25:00 [3] 5.0 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: Duluth Wild Boar

Follow up to my earlier bike ride. The rubbing noise I think is coming from the front disc brake, I will try loosing it a bit before trying again. Noise is still there when coasting. Goes away when the front brake is in use.

Rain drove me inside during the test ride.

Orienteering 1:55:00 [2] 3.7 km (31:05 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2015

Updating the map at the Girl Scout HDQ for the meet on 05/30. Always difficult to design, since the HDQ's property is only about 3 acres so we also use the Beargrass Greenway which is a lineal park along Beargrass creek. It floods all the time and will eventually destroy the bike path along it. I also don't go as deep into the woods due to the homeless and fields of poison ivy. So it is always an interesting challenge to design the sprint. Just try to add a different wrinkle each year.

Made my annual trip to Paradise, KY. I do an audit there for a credit union. It's 3 hours west of here and mostly surrounded by the Peabody WMA. Areas which were strip mined years ago were turned over to the state for this WMA of about 60,000 acres. It is broken into several tracts split by the Green River and the western KY parkway. Still a lot of wild land around with new growth areas and rough open abounding. A lot of water too. No parking except a few gravel pull offs here and there. A different world out there.

Orienteering 55:00 [3] 2.0 km (27:30 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2015

Meet director for the meet at Lapping Park. We never draw well there so only printed 25 maps. Ended up with 37 coming out. We had to recycle quite a few maps. Just going to have to print more in the future. Weather was ideal.
I also need to adjust the line thicknesses on these sprint maps in the future, the map would be a lot crisper and easy to read. We have several that are 1:10,000 that we print out at 1:4,000 for the sprints.

Orienteering 5:00:00 [3] 8.0 km (37:30 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2015

Went out to Otter Creek to help with the pickup. Grabbed 12 controls that were all new to me on the Northern part of the map. A couple were difficult because you had to be within 5 Meters to even see the control due to the thick vegetation. The weather was so much better than on Saturday. Today was all about fighting the green wall.

Note

Rest Day - very sore, my feet in particular. Special thanks to Bruce for arranging the Mad Otter.

Orienteering race 5:48:39 [4] 19.7 km (17:42 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2015

6hr Rogaine at Otter Creek. My time was inflated by about 15 minutes
due to me failing to punch finish and the results crew was trying to produce 6 hr winners. Interesting meet. Due to the hot & humid conditions I drank roughly 2 gallons and went thru two packages of electrolyte gel chews. Stopped and took several photos along the way. Had to redo the dressing on the injured foot. Amazing all the old buildings that are beginning to fall down.

Setting 11 controls mainly on bike some foot.

Biking 15:00 [1] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Pumped up bike & oiled chain. Took it on a test spin. I'm going to try and set controls tomorrow at Otter Creek. Bike making a grinding noise. I will need to see if I can figure out the cause.

Orienteering race 29:58 [4] 2.3 km (13:02 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2015

Classic definition of a "Goat or Cluster Fuck" Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Note to self: No sprints around major events, we don't have the volunteer number to handle all this. Need to have some kind of rule, if you're not updating the map, don't get cute with the controls. Put them in plain view.

Mapping the Frisbee golf course at Lapping Park. Total transformation of that area. Will make for some interesting & challenging sprints in this area. Added 6 bridges, 4 benches and many other point features. Opened up the forest quite a bit.

Walking 1:30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)
shoes: Duluth Wild Boar

Brought grandkids to Shanty Hollow Lake near BG and did the two mile hike over a rough and rocky path to the waterfall. The hike took much longer than planned due to having a 3 year old, one of the kids was wading in the pool under the waterfall and stepped on a glass shard which caused a lot of bleeding. I had my back pack with all my AR first aid kit. So we bandaged him up and got out okay.

Putting out controls at Brown Park.

Our first sprint of the summer series was at Brown Park. A small but beautiful park. We had 47 to start the year with many newcomers and several who were at the park and just joined in with us. I was a little surprised by the number. Ran map copies for 35. Our first sprint normally has 25 - 30. So we recycled several maps to get everyone thru.

Cleaned out the Meet box. It was completely trashed. Map copies not used from the last 7 or 8 meets, real trash. Got it all cleaned out and set up. Ran new registrations sheets. Got everything done except clean the finger sticks - strong smell of sweat. I try and soak them in a weak water, bleach solution every year.

Cleaned out the final 6 controls on the west side of Deam Lake. These were close to trails so no problems when you leave the trail you plunge into a green wall.

Meet Louis III at EP Tom Sawyer Park. Got all the gear he was carrying from Deam Lake. Then I went and put in the missing control on the permanent course. Very wet, water was over my ankles - perfect condition for driving in Carsonite posts.

Control Pickup at Deam Lake. Got to the first control 388 - oh no they put these on metal stands - I cannot believe, makes it so hard to pick up. Metal stands are for sprints not the deep woods. Get to the second control 287, the point on the map is under water, I attack again from a different direction end up at the same spot. Ok move on to 285 get it. It is so green 5 M visability, so thick and dragging these metal control stands thru this brush pure agony. I attacked control 373 from 285 cross country walk right by it - did not see it. The control was under a log?? My GPS tracks confirm I walked by it the first time. Had to go to the top of the hill and backtrack down to find it. Moved on to 272 no problem, 269 was on one of those extra long metal poles. I had to cross the creek at 269. The little 2 foot creek was backed up from the lake lower down. Quite a time finding 367. It was correctly placed on the map, but the map in that section is not accurate. (Yes I was the one who drew that part in the map). Then getting 368 - it had been under water. The mud was incredible, sucking my shoes off. Always an adventure at Deam Lake. Did I mention I hate metal stands in the woods.
