Mapping 3:11:00 [3] 8.94 km (21:22 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2015

Walked the boundary on the far east part of Taylorsville Lake State Park. The park goes all the way to the main highway. Enough unmapped to do a Classic. Not enough for a Long unless the WMA land is used.

Control pickup - my first time north of the park road touching controls. Tent pickup - drained the water out of it, no hope of it drying today. Packed up the bed of my truck. Luckily it was not raining, the bed was almost full with equipment. We had a lot of help with control pickup!

Had the annual physical - All signs great. Told I'm in the upper 1% health category for my age. When I compare myself to other Orienteers I always see the need for improvement, but to the general population I'm in the top 1%, it's amazing what Orienteering & AR do for your health.

Orienteering race 1:37:42 [4] 4.9 km (19:56 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2015

Challenging Course set by Mike. The first 4 controls were straight forward but you had several route choices. On 5 I choose to aim off and attack from the bend in the trail, did not feel I could hit straight on. (Course was quite green in places) On 6 did the same thing using the pond. On 7 lined up at the road entrance to the cemetery took a bearing and spiked it. #8 made me very nervous I could see me blowing past it and never finding it. I lined up with the 90 degree turn in the road and attacked. Found it mainly because the rootstock was taller than me. Took it slow sped up for #9, overshoot it and hit my backstop, so I was going back to relocate and there was the control had missed it by 20 meters on the other side of a dense green area. #10 hit the trail early than I was aiming for but used compass readings to relocate then onto the pond. 11 was an interesting short cross country jaunt from a trail. 12 I went to the SE trail bend and attacked from there. Very thick with thorns and limited visability. Used the fence to locate it. 13 was a hideous move thru thick brush and thorns. I contoured around the darkest green but it made no difference. Headed for the road on the shortest point to get out of all the green. Then a road run to 14.

Orienteering 4:00:00 [3] 4.5 mi (53:20 / mi)
shoes: OROC Spiked

I had 5 controls to pick up Started with the Re-entrant below 190 parked at the two old stone booths. I was going to take the direct way in, but when I saw the grade I followed Dave's advice and went on the old road which followed the creek. I cut in on the path past the utility cut but lost the path in the utility cut. Took a first pass and came up empty went up to the double hill top and relocated & then found it. Realized on the way out that the trail forked and I had followed the wrong fork up the hill rather than around it.

Next I went and parked next to the ATV trail. The minor re-entrant N of 190 I followed Stephanie's clues and spiked it, only to realize I had left the key in the truck when I took off my jacket. Repeated and snagged it. Then I went for the upper re-entrant on the S side of 190. Walked three re-entrants top to bottom all N - S orientation. No control. Relocated on the hill top and tried again! Nothing - I finally had to concede that it had me. I probably walked past it and just did not see it - my glasses were steamed at that point. Hay, that's a good excuse to try & salvage a little pride.

Next picked up the control at the tunnel. Then drove all the way to the top of the mountain and went after the upper re-entrant that 50% of the AR teams never found. Both Dave & Stephanie had given me lots of clues about it. I spiked the control. It was really green around this control, I can see why teams had trouble with it. This one took me less time than any of the others. Long upward climb back to the road.

Orienteering 3:00:00 [3] 5.5 mi (32:44 / mi)
shoes: OROC Spiked

Picking up controls from National Champs AR race at Pine MTN My target was 5 controls only grabbed 4 in the rain.

The 5th I was trying to get was on a tunnel on a rail trail. I drove to where I thought the pull off was only to hear a "thunk" and my truck was stuck in the mud. I tried to get it out only to have the truck slide 180 degrees between two small banks. I went up to a house to first find out where this rail trail was - she told me she had no idea (ed. turns out I went about 200 meters too far) I told her my truck was stuck in the mud. She said that happens all the time, just throw some rocks under the tires and rock it. I finally did get it out of there, the tires were smoking when I finally got out. [ed I parked on the other side of the rail trail and walked in to the tunnel on Sunday and got the control. Beautiful rail trail, will go back]

Note

Updated Firmware on 10 more control units. Nasty day temperature dropped to near 50 in a heavy rain and stiff NE winds.
