I have been going thru the equipment getting ready for the Saturday meets. I tried using superglue on a couple finger sticks that the end had snapped off. I will test them later when I run the simulation for the goat.

Our equipment has aged, so it now requires watching over. There are always electronic controls that fail the voltage test. Finger sticks that the ends break off, control stands that require repairs.

Kayaking 2:42:00 [3] 8.19 km (19:47 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Interesting Paddle O by Indy O at Eagle Creek Reservoir. I proved you can use a donut hole pillow inside a garbage bag and still kayak with a broken tail bone.

On our way from control 21 to 19 we hit an area of very agitated water. The swift current from the North was hitting a stiff SW wind. A sailboat just to my east toppled over throwing the two crew members into the lake. I made sure they were okay and then we fought to get our kayaks into the leeward side of the island that control 19 was on. We got to control 17 and someone on foot was swimming to 17. He asked us to watch him and make sure he got back to land which we did. I told him that foot participants don't go after the controls on the islands. He assured me that the meet director had said all controls were in play.

At this point, the tail bone said enough we headed back and got caught up in a swift South current. I hardly had to paddle all and we were at control 12. Then back into the wind as we lost the protection of the causeway around the bird preserve. Janet and I had quite an adventure - fun time

I downloaded the latest version of SI - Config and SI - Boot. I am planning to update all our stations plus wipe them clean. It's time to get ready for the Saturday meets now that Sprint Season has ended. I really am not looking forward to this, but it needs to get done. At least I have a couple weeks to get it done.

Orienteering race 46:39 [4] 2.7 km (17:17 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

I spent most of the race confused - never got going mentally. I don't know if it was the heat or just the layout. Most likely I had a lot of lost time.

Walking 35:50 [1] 2.82 km (12:42 / km)

Janet and I got my kayak down. I tested sitting in it with the broken tail bone. We've decided to do the Paddle O, just figuring out how to make it work. I think we will rig up a garbage bag maybe around the special pillow. My kayak seat is fairly comfortable but after a couple of hours of sitting who knows.

Mapping 3:12:15 [3] 8.01 km (24:00 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Mapping at Barren Ridge Camp today. Brought 120 oz of water should have brought 200. Very humid and hot today. I think it will take me one more day to finish up. That will need to be in a later trip.

All cross country travel today. The woods are very open for the most part. Looks like it will be mostly white except for a couple spots. The water level is also within 1/2 foot of normal for the season.

I also stopped in and paid a visit to the local Army Corp of Engineering Office down here. I got some good maps from them.

Orienteering race 25:13 [4] 1.51 km (16:42 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Good Forest Sprint done by Louie. We had about 35 at the meet. This was straight through the woods stuff. Map had some problems it did not get updated in places. My problem control here was #6. I ran from 5 to 6 1st time did not see it. Went back to 5 took a bearing and still did not find it. I was headed back to 5 to use a bearing and pace count when I stumbled over it. Several unmapped pits around the pit with the control did not help me, but I should have taken a bearing in the first try.

I ran the course without a clue sheet of any kind. Louie wanted everyone not to look at their map until they hit the start. Great but I was to #1 before I realized no clue sheet. So I just ran to the circle on the map and hoped that the control was there.

Orienteering race 18:40 [4] 1.51 km (12:22 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

This time I had a clue sheet. This was the second sprint. I am still not kicking into my highest speed gear. Part is mental, I was told if I fall, I will go back to day 1 condition so that is making me more slow down. Part is physical, still don't have the conditioning back yet.

No real issues here. Another thru the woods sprint. I was glad to have the insect guard clothes on. I was running straight thru the high grass and brush, no worries. I had gotten so tired of being bitten. Much better now with the right uniform.

Setting out the sprint controls plus some pickup. Meet at Girl Scout Headquarters in Louisville. Several got stung by some ground wasps. I walked the area and never saw them before the meet.

Walking 16:15 [1] 1.41 km (11:31 / km)

We had about 45 at the meet. Interesting to me no Girl Scouts, however there were Boy Scouts.

Walking 36:18 [1] 2.82 km (12:52 / km)

Talked with the Rough River and Cave Creek managers today. The big dam renovation has started. Part of the Rough River map will be off limits. I need to redo the prelim courses I had roughed out. But starting next year even more of the map will be off-limits. Cave Creek is unaffected. I will need to discuss with Bruce.

Mapping 44:49 [1] 2.7 km (16:36 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Finished the map and course for the sprint on Tuesday night. It will be interesting. I could only use about 1/2 my control locations from the prelim course map I did a couple months ago. It has really grown up and some of them were not safe. Shoulder high weeds covering the pit.

Should be a warm sprint. No idea on the numbers coming from the girl scouts, they published on their website and emailed all the local troops. We will see how it goes.

Walking 35:45 [1] 2.82 km (12:41 / km)

The new pair of the Brooks Cascadia have really been growing on me. At first, I was not real impressed but now I find they are my shoe of first choice. They will be okay except in muddy or ice (snow) conditions. A tremendous amount of cushion. I feel like I'm moving on air.
