Orienteering race 28:54 [5] 2.4 km (12:02 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Started with course 2. I have been practicing running to the circle on the map and blocking everything else out. It has improved my speed. When I get to the circle if I don't see it than I look at the clue sheet, otherwise I punch and move on. I ran into a problem in that I skipped control 12 and ran straight to the finish. This cost me 1:18 in going back and punching 12 and coming back in to finish.

I ran course #1 second. On this run, I ran from 10 to 14 skipping 11, 12 & 13. This painfully point out my new method is not without flaws. So I will need to refine my method.

I reran course 1 over again from the start. Given the humidity and heat, I was drained. I did the whole course with one major error. On the way from 13 to 14, I ran past the library and went around the Auditorium thinking it was the library. When I went around I knew immediately where I was. But it was a 1:33 error.

Overall my new method is helping, but I need to refine the technique.

My conditioning now has me doing an old man jog for 5 K. I need to add another 10% on the speed over the next 6 months.

This leave me with two items to be working on - conditioning and perfecting my new technique.

Set out controls for our last Tuesday sprint of the year. I printed 30 maps and we had 30 come out. Course very much like last week but I unfurled the flags this week. Had a lot of problem getting the controls in the ground along the river. One of them I punched through an old log. Ground is mostly rock along the river.

Orienteering race 30:25 [5] 2.8 km (10:52 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Left calf continues to heal up and is stronger every time out. It felt good tonight. My best leg was 4 to 5. AP showed time lost to contol 10 and 11. On control 10, I was at the right tree just did not see the control the first time around. On control 11, stopped at the wrong tree. Being the first one out I noticed I was beating down alot of the brush getting back to the control. When I was picking up some of the controls, there was an elephant trail to them.

Navigation has improved to where, my conditioning is now the big drag on time.

Walked the sprint course at Cox Park. There's just no substitute for visiting all the control locations for a meet. One of the places I wanted to place a control had a Yellow Jacket nest you had to step over to get to the control location. I was also able to greatly minimize the amount of poison ivy you had to cross, very little now. Park was very crowded!

Orienteering race 20:02 [5] 2.2 km (9:06 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

The great weather had gotten me in the mood to do an Orienteering Race on Saturday before the heat returns. The closest I could find on Attackpoint was in MI. So I looked at OCIN's website cause I thought maybe Mike had listed a meet somewhere in Ohio. Saw the meet in Oxford, a quick posting on Facebook - OLOU yielded 3 for the trip, but Laurie had to back out. Oxford is a 2 hr trip but it was much better than MI.

OCIN Campus Sprint at Miami U at Oxford. Was able to keep map contact the whole time. The map was a jewel. Enjoyed the course, well laid out. Matt had posted results already so it confirmed what I thought no time lost.

Orienteering race 41:46 [5] 2.9 km (14:24 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

This was the second course at Miami U. Part was on the campus then it plunged to a large creek with a couple of wet foot crossings for me. I kept map contact except for 3 to 4. I don't know what happened there. I was on the campus and don't know why I had any problem at all. Alot of this course was in the forest. Ran well but was tiring after the hill climb back up the hill.

Per the AP analysis I did lose over 3 min of time. Almost all on 3 to 4. Also lost a few seconds on 9 to 10. I never saw a trail and ran through the woods on a bearing came out right at a dam. Must have been a trail. On 14 to finish it also shows me losing a few seconds must have been the route choice on that.

Orienteering race 29:56 [4] 3.5 km (8:33 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

I went ahead and ran tonight. Overran control # 6 badly, then thought I could circle back around to it and got caught behind the construction fences. Ended with half my time on one control. Leg hurt but that was only a small amount of the problem. Just a bad night for me on the course.

I will try and run at the sprint tomorrow night. It will be my first attempt since tearing the calf muscle. I will put on compression socks to help. Always nervous on the first trial.

Continued mapping today at Cave Creek. Found the Cave, it's real. Had to pull off early, just too much pain from stepping in the Groundhog hole yesterday. Oh well, you do what you got to do. I go back next week to finish up the Cave Creek Map.

Mapping 5:39:00 [3] 8.24 km (41:08 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Stepped in a Woodchuck hole right off the bat which slowed me quite a bit. My left calf is very sore cannot put full weight on it.

Mapping at Cave Creek. I never did find the southern boundary to the Corp owned property, oh well have to wait for next year. There will be enough mapped here to do the 3 hr Score O.
