Mapping (Mapping) 1:55:00 [2] 6.44 km (17:51 / km)
shoes: Jalas - Spiked

Starting mapping at Taylorsville Lake, my first mapping N of the park road. I started by running some of the trails on the N side of the road. Mostly open forest and steep. I have mapped the 800 acres S of the road. Now just 1200 acres N of the road remain of the state park.

Walking 32:15 [1] 2.82 km (11:26 / km)

Cold Rain gave me a chance to stay inside and finish up the geo-referenced base map for Waterfront Park. I'm now ready to start on the field work. I was amazed the Lojic map for Louisville had all the contour lines for the park created features.

Mapping at Thurman Hutchens Park. Alot of work to update, but it looks like it will be another excellent sprint map. This was the first map I ever did and it is needing a lot of cleanup.

Orienteering 1 [3]

Travel day back.

On the long ride home, really had a chance to reflect on the weekend. The coaching I got in the cabin and the excellent atmosphere the whole time really helped out.

I thought I would find my level of fitness was holding me back the most at these meets. Rather I found I just don't have enough racing experience, the fitness issue is a secondary problem.

I will need to channel my tendacy to get over excited and learn to stay more focused. I will also put some of the practicing techniques I learned into play.

I also need to get out and do more A meets each year. Top level competition only makes you better. Before, I signed up for this, I had thought of falling back into the general Brown category. I really glad I did not do that. Being taken behind the woodshed and getting beat up, can really spur you on to higher levels of achievement.

Orienteering race 34:38 [4] 2.6 km (13:19 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Again, overwhelmed by the huge crowds, I was in a chute with 4 others. I walked until I found myself and was comfortable with the map. I was running and seeing the map well until about control 5. I slowed down the pace then to match how fast I was seeing the map, still made a bunch of small errors after that, like over-running a path interesection.

This time I made a mental note to relocate immediately when I did not feel like I had map contact.

This sprint was one of the most exciting meets I have been a part of. Running in a "village" type atmosphere with 100's of other runners going in all different directions. You really had to keep your mental focus and not be distracted by what was going on around you.

Orienteering race 4:07:28 [4] 14.62 km (16:56 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Started off scared to death because of what I had done on Friday. I had told myself before I started, that no matter what, I was going to punch all the controls. That resolve was quickly tested after I made an incredible error on the leg from 1 to 2. I went so far past control 2, missed it by 100 meters too low, that I had trouble relocating. Wandered around for what seemed for ever until I finally found myself looking down at Landis Lake.

I pushed on and continued on the course I really enjoyed the long leg from 4 to 5, I had to constantly think about what was the best route choice. I made another bad blunder on 8 to 9. I think think I used the wrong compass direction, may have not had the map turned right, It's the only way I could explain where I found myself when I relocated.

On the way from 12 to 13, had bad cramps in my legs. I drained my camelbak. An really dogged it from there on in, just so I could finish.

I had the distinction of having the highest time of any male runner that finished the course. That was discouraging, but I realized the errors I made were correctable and would greatly improve my time.

Peter sat down in the cabin and went over the course with me. Another great training time.

Orienteering race 1:28:51 [4] 4.2 km (21:09 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

This was one of the worst performances, I have ever done in a meet. I was very disappointed in myself, felt like turning around and going in. Eventually got hold of myself, relocated on the map and just started at control 8. I struggled getting all the controls from 8 to 17.

I went back to the cabin very discouraged. I really felt like packing up and leaving. The guys in the cabin were very helpful. They offered a lot of pointers. Jan from Norway sat down with me and went over the whole course, control by control (he ran the same course only in the M50+). It really helped me see a lot of stuff I just did not know. I guess after 4 years I thought I knew a lot. This course helped me see how much I have to learn.

I had wondered what being in a cabin with 6 guys I had never met would be like, it was very up lifting since we all had a strong passion for Orienteering. They really helped me technically and mentally.

Put out last controls. Meet ran well. We had 118 in attendance. Several schools brought about 1/2 their number due to the 4 day weekend.

Picked up one loop of controls on the advanced course, but I will need to go back tomorrow and finish up the control pickup.

Planted the controls for the advanced courses at Taylorsville Lake today. Alot of cross country particularly on red. Just not a lot of trails on this part that was just mapped.

Looking like we will have about 130 at the meet.

I got to use my Columbia rain jacket in the deluge here this evening. As always it holds up nicely for about 30 minutes in a downpour.
