Mapping 2:39:16 [3] 6.38 km (24:58 / km)
shoes: INOV TERROC 330

Working on Long Course control locations with Nolan my 9 year old grandson. Highlight for Nolan was flushing a turkey that brushed him when we spooked it.

Worked on 9 control locations from White & Yellow. All of them were not still there. So scouted some close by as replacements.

Weather held, it rained before we left and was raining on us during the ride home. Very wet at the park right now.

Biking 3:00:00 [3] 7.5 mi (24:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Finally began the bicycle classes put on by the Louisville Bike club. 45 minute lecture followed by 45min of drills. Then the bike ride on some very busy streets - for training purposes.

As Carl kept telling me had to do something to break out of my bike phobia so I'm trying. Learned a lot tonight. It's a weekly class for 5 weeks.

Orienteering race 19:24 [4] 2.0 km (9:42 / km)
shoes: OROC Spiked

I stayed focus and ran a pretty clean race. Finished middle of the pack. What has not returned for me since the bike accident is any speed. I will need to start training on this if I intend to make any improvement.

Walking 18:00 [1] 1.41 km (12:46 / km)

Orienteering race 42:44 [4] 1.6 km (26:42 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Sprint thru Control #5 then turned into controls in the woods. Some minor problems on control 6 but just screwed control 8 badly I'm sure missed time will be over 10 min. I went up the wrong spur and then tried to correct at the top. Should have looked at the compass before going up the spur.

Orienteering 17:07 [4] 1.4 km (12:14 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Sprint #2 at Indiana Creek. My second course of the day. Helped with the pickup afterwards. I did not realize but my first time helping. Real interesting system I got to see how it came apart and was stored.

The heavy rain had started by this time. Ben & Stephanie came to my rescue saved me from camping at Big Bone Lick in the heavy downpours.

Wednesday Jun 17, 2015 #

Walking 34:28 [1] 2.82 km (12:13 / km)
shoes: OROC Spiked

Very humid with a couple rounds of T-storms moving thru today. Took a break from physical activity today - worked on audits.

Tuesday Jun 16, 2015 #

Walking 16:50 [1] 1.41 km (11:56 / km)
shoes: OROC Spiked

Meeting with T-Lake Park staff went will. Everyone's on board for the A meet.

Orienteering 2:15:00 [2] 6.14 km (21:59 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

After the meeting I was working on the Long Courses. I was starting to scout the armchair locations, plus start and finish. Came out with some minor map updates also.

Orienteering race 26:32 [4] 2.6 km (10:12 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Good course set by Ben King at the U of L Campus. One real bad error was looking for the control in the wrong garden circle! Real hot day today, the temp's were about 93 when we started.

Monday Jun 15, 2015 #

Walking 33:50 [1] 2.82 km (12:00 / km)
shoes: OROC Spiked

Using two inserts in the shoe. One that came with the shoe plus the one I have been using in my other shoes. A little more comfortable than before. I will work with this and see if I can get some use out of these shoes.

Weights (weights) 5:00 [3]

While I was waiting for Ben to come by and pick up the controls for tomorrows meet. I repaired 5 control stands. Two with broken plates (holds the control unit), one the plate had fallen off screw, lock washer and nut missing and two were missing punches.

Sunday Jun 14, 2015 #

Walking 33:50 [1] 2.82 km (12:00 / km)
shoes: OROC Spiked

Worked on getting the shutters ready for painting today. Really wonder why we have them.

I realized I have not worn my OROC shoes since I hurt my left foot in them. I pulled their insert and replaced with the one I am using in all my other shoes. They were still somewhat uncomfortable. Very confusing since I put this insert into the INOV TERROC 330 and it was great. I will try the shoe with their insert plus my insert and see if my foot will fit in it. I like the tread on the OROC just seems to be an uncomfortable shoe.

Kayaking 30:00 [3] 1.6 mi (18:45 / mi)

Was focused on technique. I found out right away why I had drifted away from it. When I tried to keep the paddlers box, I was running into my knees. My foot holds are not long enough for me, so my knees are sticking up. Still I found the videos helpful to think of the power coming from the rotation of the body rather than the arms and shoulder. I was also able to get my feet involved until the right one started cramping. So overall some helpful hints from the videos on You tube. Just have to think through how to straighten my legs.

Walking 34:55 [1] 2.82 km (12:23 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Went to a new boat ramp at Taylorsville Lake with Janet. The 4th one we have launched from. We went west and paddled up Timber Creek. The creek is full of dead trees standing straight up right where they used to grow before the lake was made 40 years ago. For some reason they have not rotted and fallen into the water. Must be very hard wood. I talked with the old timers at the boat ramp. They said it has always been that way. It made for a real interesting game of dodge-em. In many cases there was a snag just below the water level that you could not see which would hang the boat or bump the boat to the side.

The boat ramp was Chowning Lane which was close to 20 minutes off any major road which explained why the boat ramp parking lot never had many vehicles in it on Google Earth. Really hard to get to and no facilities except for a parking lot and the woods.

Walking 34:50 [1] 2.82 km (12:21 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Very hot again around 92 today

Weights (weights) 5:00 [3]

Given the hot weather, I expect to be kayaking tomorrow. Watched three paddling technique clips on You tube. I knew my technique must be bad given the problem I had at the adventure race. Sure enough I had forgotten everything I had once learned. So I will be practicing technique tomorrow.

Walking 34:15 [1] 2.82 km (12:09 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

CORE 5:00 [5]

Hot 93 degrees. Humidity is starting to come up now.

Other 5:00 [3]

The new club in Blacksburg is called Blue Ridge Orienteering Club (BROC) and it is chartered thru OUSA.

Wednesday Jun 10, 2015 #

Walking 34:50 [1] 2.82 km (12:21 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Very hot day 90 degrees but the humidity is still tolerable.

I was excited to see that a new Orienteering Club has formed in Blacksburg, VA my old stomping grounds. I joined their news feed - I will try to stop in for a meet and then visit the family in SW VA.

Weights (weights) 5:00 [3]

Meeting with the Taylorsville Lake Park staff was postponed. There is a new manager starting later this week. They thought it wise that he should be in the meeting. I had to agree with them.

Tuesday Jun 9, 2015 #

Orienteering race 26:10 [4] 2.1 km (12:28 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Breathing issues until I got past control 2 then my lungs seemed to open up. Another good sprint course set by Louie. Not as technical as last year. Good turnout 30 - 35 showed up at a Park outside our core area.

Orienteering 30:00 [2] 1.5 km (20:00 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Control pickup One of the dogs that came with an Orienteer got in a fight with another dog. Looked like an ear was partially pulled off.

I have always had a neutral feeling about dogs coming to the meets. The ones that run the course with their owner seems to make sense to me. The ones that are left at the start while the owner goes out on the course never seemed to make sense to me. What does the dog get our of it? Sometimes the owner expects others to watch their dog for them while on the course or ties them up. Hard topic for me, try to keep an open mind.

Monday Jun 8, 2015 #

Walking 35:50 [1] 2.82 km (12:42 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

When I looked myself up in the results - I found I had credit for 12 controls. You got credit for punching in at the TA and Finish. So I had 12 of 22. I was solidly in the middle of the pack.

Was wearing an old pair of shoes today that need to be retired - 657 miles. My regular were drying out from the AR.

Walking 1 [0] 0.1 km (10 / km)
shoes: Rail Rider Pants

Other 5:00 [3]

Stretching some tight muscles

Note

Continued from Saturday

Once I got back, my plan was to ditch the bike and do some by foot. But it made so much more sense to ride the bike to a good attack point then go in by foot. Got 3 controls that way. I was pretty close to another but the cramping was starting in the legs, so I just went back and called it a day.

3 of the 120 racers cleared the course (all 20 controls). I ended with 10 controls.

Adventure Race race 5:45:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Unknown distance - some on bike, some foot & some kayak.

Really fun format - 20 total controls. They picked out 4 you had to get to pass level one, then you could play in level 2. You could get them in any order using any (bike, foot or paddle) means except for swimming.

I worked on getting the 4 and any others that were close to them. The first of the 4 that I did was on cliff with a view you had to stop and take in. The second was deep in a cave. I got into the cave and my headlamp died right away. I went out pulled out my spare batteries and headed back in. The last 10 meters was crawling in a wet channel. Priceless! On my way to the 3rd I stopped at the camp store and bought 2 bottles of Gatorade - my single best decision of the race. Very hot & humid around 90. The 3rd was a Spur a fairly easy control. Shifted to the kayak and went out to an island to grab the 4th. It was like paddling in a washing machine. The water was stirred up by the power boats and was bouncing off the cliffs. At times I was having to face the kayak into the waves which were white capped just to keep from turning over. I quickly abandoned my idea of getting any other control points via the kayak. I was then playing in level 2 with about 2 1/2 hours left. Did the required long bike ride back from the marina to the lodge. A killer hill coming out of the marina.

Walking 36:35 [1] 2.82 km (12:58 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Hot & Humid today 80's bright sunshine

Getting all the gear together. I was working on the bike today. Feel like a total loser on a bike. I signed up for a class for beginners on bikes. After getting run over by a the car last year, I want to start over again hopefully with new ideas. Too bad the bike class does not start until after the adventure race.

Walking 36:05 [1] 2.82 km (12:48 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

Going to dig thru the gear list and make sure I'm all set for the Adventure Race this Saturday.

Orienteering race 19:32 [4] 1.5 km (13:01 / km)
shoes: OROC Spiked

Surprisingly technical sprint set by Diane. A lot of tricky control locations. This allowed me to finish much higher than usual. Finished 9th out of 34. Several of the speed demons lost so much time, I was able to finish above them for a change. Temps were in the middle 60's, dry and a thick blanket of clouds.

Orienteering race 37:57 [4] 2.3 km (16:30 / km)
shoes: OROC Spiked

Longer sprint course set by Bruce. It featured almost constant change of direction which really kept you on your toes. Learned real quick not to trust the trails or vegetation boundaries on the map. Took only the contours and roads as gospel. Control 2 drove it home to me. Made a bad route choice on 14 to 15 which cost me. It will be interesting to see where else I lost time.

Walking 17:00 [1] 1.41 km (12:03 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia NI

A cool wet day, most of the day was in the 50's. Looks like the cool weather will hold for the sprint tomorrow night.

CORE 5:00 [4]

First time doing Core since plantar fasciitis onset.

Other 5:00 [3]

Working out some tight muscles in my back
