Walking 2:20:00 [2] 3.0 mi (46:40 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Long walk deep into the woods on the farm along a creek. Sun does not shine down here. Cold and snow covered ground. This is the land of 20 foot contours. Topography here is like Jenny Wiley State park. Very impressed with my 7 year old grandson who did the trek with me. He's not real focused what 7 year old is, but strong. No complaints he did two very long and steep hill climbs.

Walking 1:00:00 [2] 1.5 mi (40:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Walk about on the farm with two Grandsons. We had a good time. Cold and snowy. None of the rocks broke the ice on the pond.

Walking 14:00 [1] 1.41 km (9:56 / km)

Went to BG to pick up some grandkids! It's holiday time

Walking 28:55 [3] 2.82 km (10:15 / km)

Setup the goat in the OE 2003 program. Since two controls can be skipped that will not work with SI Simple. I am using SI Simple for the Junior and the Kid. We should have 6 high school ROTC groups at the meet. I have really tried to educate the instructors that the high school kids don't need to be on the goat.

Walking 28:00 [2] 2.82 km (9:56 / km)

Working on the goat meet. Got the courses reviewed by Arnie. We made a few changes. I set the time on all the controls we are using except for the controls Louie picked up. Cannot hook up with him. We are using CCC this year for the goat. We got their permission but we have to stay on the west side of the camp due to clean up day on the east. It's been over 10 years since we held a meet on the west side of the camp. I've been doing map cleanup for a while.

Walking 28:19 [1] 2.82 km (10:02 / km)

One last comment on the Bradford Woods Meet. I been to several classic Orienteering Meets using manual punches. A couple of them the meet director arranged the controls in such a way that people were running it like a score O. Thankfully the meet yesterday was organized in a broad loop where there would be almost no gain from cheating.

Orienteering race 2:26:00 [4] 8.2 km (17:48 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Got to the meet and found out Frank was calling the red course a blue course. So the meet had Blue, Orange, Yellow and White. I had just driven 2.5 hrs, so I did the Blue course. This was my first meet with the thumb compass. I loved the metric scale, the way it laid right on the map. I was doing a lot of pace counting with great success. I'm so hooked on terrain association that it was hard to use the compass part. But there were a couple places that I had to and it worked great. I need to practice but I get the drift.

The meet was well attended. The Blue course I did had a red distance but a hideous climb. Frank took us into some areas I had never been before. The old cabin on HWY 67. Another hole that was a re-entrant junction - deep - it was difficult to get out, the sides were so steep on all side. I did not get lost, a couple legs I was not efficient with. Mostly I was just slow. The elevation change did a number on my legs. I suspect the winning time would be around 70 minutes on this course. The controls were all either properly placed or very close. I enjoyed myself!

Walking 28:55 [1] 2.82 km (10:15 / km)

I was very surprised my thumb compass arrived today. So I will make every effort to get up to the Indy O meet tomorrow and practice with it. I ordered the type made in Finland. I figured it would be superior to the one made in China. The needle on this one is quite responsive. A new toy for me.

Rainy evening!

Walking 29:15 [1] 2.82 km (10:22 / km)

Still trying to recruit someone to go with me to the Saturday Indy O meet. So far no takers. I have always enjoyed Bradford Woods. Normally Indy O does it late spring. It will be really cold with some snow flurries on Saturday.

Walking 29:11 [1] 2.82 km (10:21 / km)

Broke down and ordered the thumb compass last night. I'm looking at maybe doing the Indy O meet at Bradford Woods on Saturday. I'm still mulling it over. Bruce may be doing something informal at Cherokee Park

Walking 29:14 [1] 2.82 km (10:22 / km)

I was thinking if I have a Thumb compass maybe I can hang onto it. At any rate, I will need to do something for a compass soon.

Walking 14:30 [1] 1.41 km (10:17 / km)

The area has been absolutely hammered with heavy rain today. Shortened up the walking today. Cleaning gutters etc getting ready for the next round this afternoon.

Event: OLOU Night O

Orienteering race 1:30:26 [5] 10.1 km (8:57 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Ran the whole meet unusual for me. When I planned my route I did not think I could run the whole thing so I ended up leaving some controls on the table I could have gotten. The 5th control into the meet #48 was placed at the wrong ditch junction. It was only 15 meters N of the correct location but it was on the other side of a trail which was the obvious back stop. Just went into a Rogaine mode plenty of others looking for it. I lost the compass around the 10th control. I was a little nervous without it, so I did not go into the SW corner of the park after two controls down there because it's so confusing. The only reason I could find the controls was the reflective tape Jim had put on the stands. They had hung the bags low due to losing a control last year, but the tape for the most part made it easy to find. Control 50 was flat on the ground, I put it back up, I was the first one to it. I finished with 23 of the 28 and had 30 minutes to spare.

Walking 29:12 [1] 2.82 km (10:21 / km)

I was supposed to play Grandpa at the meet tomorrow night and take a 3 year old and 8 year old with me. I was thinking we could bag 2 or 3 controls in the dark at the Night O. Not sure now whether they will be able to go.

Walking 29:11 [1] 2.82 km (10:21 / km)

Received the last pieces of the download station yesterday from SI in Germany. The rest came a couple weeks ago from SI in CA. I've put everything together recharged printer and have reset time on the box. I will have the club use two download boxes for the night O so I can test everything. This will now complete what we need for our 3X meets - Yea.

Walking 29:18 [1] 2.82 km (10:23 / km)

Having wondered the woods a lot for mapping purposes. I met and have struck up friendships with a trapper and a geocacher. The trapper has invited me to go along with him and walk the trap lines. I'm still mulling it over. It would be something different and it's outside. I'm still trying to understand geocaching. It has many facets. I've come to understand some of them. I think the next time I do a Rogaine I might also have a geocaching course.

Walking 29:35 [1] 2.82 km (10:29 / km)

Heard back from NSF on my email. First their scoring is little different than I realized. They don't use the last digit of the control. So for control 63 they give 60 points for 54 they give 50. So my total was 420 they told me they had screwed up the bib #'s, putting mine on Vbenton and putting Vbenton on mine. Oh well, at least I know how they score now.

Walking 29:15 [1] 2.82 km (10:22 / km)

I was a little baffled by the NSF results that were posted. I punched 455 control points but was only given 1/2 of that. The time coming in was wrong and the team # was wrong. I emailed them. I just wanted to make sure I understand their whole process since I'm trying to learn new ideas on Rogaines.

Mapping 1:45:00 [2] 5.81 km (18:04 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

I walked the trails on the south side of McNeely Lake. When I went to put in the data from the GPS, I found out the map had never been GPS referenced. I am going to try and sweet talk Arnie into doing it. He has access to global mapper which makes it much easier. It's like a root canal for me to do it.

I was told the map was in horrible shape. It over all just needs a little updating it really was not that bad. You don't get lost using it. It looks like it was drawn from the LOJIC maps by Dan. Real crisp and sharp. Just some things have changed over time.

Walking 29:34 [1] 2.82 km (10:29 / km)

Going to try and get out to McNeely Park and update the trail system for Louie tomorrow.

Orienteering race 5:57:00 [4] 13.6 mi (26:15 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

I'm trying to get around and see different Rogaines to get new ideas. This was my first by NSF. They use a different kind of marker that wraps around the tree. It does not flutter in the wind like the kind of flag I am used to. I did not notice any problem with finding them until late in the meet which was either caused by being tired or the low sun angle. I walked by on marker at about 30 meters did not see until a second loop much higher and 100 meters away.

There had been one control that had been stolen wasted 25 minutes like many others on it. The scenic beauty was fantastic one stretch of the road reminded me of Skyline Drive in VA. I was overall very impressed with the organization of the meet and control placement. Like all Rogaines there were times when the control was in the next re-entrant. Topo maps don't have the accuracy of regular Orienteering map.

I was not as sharp as I have been on my last couple Rogaines may have been camping out in the cold the night before. (Rain tarp was frozen to the top of the tent in the AM.) Who knows sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield.

Walking 29:00 [3] 2.82 km (10:17 / km)

Rainy day - Hopefully getting it out of it's system. I don't really like camping in the rain.

Walking 29:00 [1] 2.82 km (10:17 / km)

I have been answering an email everyday about the Goat meet in Dec. It's been interesting, the schools love this location because it's 40 minutes south of Louisville.

Walking 29:05 [1] 2.82 km (10:19 / km)

This weekend will be my first time with NSF. I wanted to try Rogaines put on by several different groups to get ideas for our Rogaines next year.

Walking 29:04 [1] 2.82 km (10:18 / km)

Reserved a camp site at the state park for Friday - had to do Saturday also. I think the camp sites are within walking distance of the start location.
Starting to pull together the camping gear plus what I need for the Rogaine.

I had a good time at the meet yesterday. I have to admit you get quite a rush when you cannot find yourself on a map. Kind of like the rush at a horror show. I wish my time was better but for right now just concentrating on enjoying myself.

Walking 15:00 [1] 1.41 mi (10:38 / mi)

Orienteering race 1:54:05 [5] 7.0 km (16:18 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

The always challenging Diamond Oaks Map which was very well attended by several JR ROTC high schools. I ran the green course was moving along okay until the leg from 8 to 9. My plan was to run along Harrison and cut up Eaglesnest Drive. When I got to Eaglesnest it was marked private road no trespassing! Here's where my brain cramp started I continued along Harrison turning into the mall. All along pretending this was the subdivision on my map. I could not get the buildings to match up so I ended up going up the creek behind the mall. This is the same creek flowing down from control 11 - it's just off the map. I came up from here into the subdivision all confused. I decided I needed to go south and reorient. I got onto the trail on the west side of the creek and went down to the marsh and clearing. There I did the first pace count of my life to find the control. I ended up pace counting again from the man made object down to control 10 in the pit. Any way a lot of challenges for me. I need to settle in on the compass next. Pace counting is here to stay for me.
