Walking 1 [1]

Travel Day - Told Janet to watch out the mattress tied to the top of the SUV looked awful loose. Spoke the words and the mattresses flew off the SUV crashing on the highway right in front of us. Janet stopped in time and we went on.

Walking 29:30 [1] 2.82 km (10:28 / km)

I was mentally exhausted when I got home. Been reflecting over the weekend. I don't think I will do a two day event again. Hanging 70 controls was just too much. Working with two different parks, coordinating everything. I will stick to the single day in the future. Really had a lot of help on control pickup on these meets. It was done in record time for both days. I am real interested in seeing Aaron's head cam Video on Sunday.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] 4.0 km (22:30 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

time/distance estimated

I like this park. All adults, meet ran smoothly except we had a horrible placement on one of the controls - 60 meters off on one of the easy last minute controls. Really felt bad Dave had spend 20 minutes on it. One injury - a hyper-extended knee. I really felt the park worked well except for the far southern end of the park was more of a glorified trail run through rough ground. I will in the future use that mainly with Paddle O courses. The main part of the park will be great for Classic courses. I downloaded the file from the download box and will look at which legs gave the most trouble to the strong runners - we had several great runs. I can create a tremendous course that way.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] 3.0 km (20:00 / km)

Control pickup and placement - estimated

First time I have done a Score O with the high school crowd. I did not like the overall results from it. One instructor did not let his 15 freshman do it, rather he ran them on the perm course there. I did not realize this until a couple days before the meet. I also noticed that lots of the kids went off and did a couple high point controls skipping almost all the controls on there way there and back. I made a note not to do Score O format when I am expecting a lot of our high school kids. I will stick to the classic format or 3X sprint which work well with them.

Orienteering race 8:00:00 [5] 15.0 km (32:00 / km) +1650m 20:39 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

One of the toughest races, I have been a part of. I went back & used a string to measure the distance covered and climb. The climb was about a mile on the part of the course I covered.

I ended up taking first in the solo division. Many of my fellow racers were overtime, also several "rescues" where teams were picked up due to exhaustion, cramping and a broken fibula.

I ran out of water with about 1hr left was cramping bad. Ended up with the death march to the finish. I had to run the last 300 meters with both legs cramping to get in on time.

The control that will be bronzed in my mind forever was CP 6. Started at the bottom of the spur which lasted for 800 meters. The climb on the spur was about 520 feet. And the spur was covered with boulders requiring a rock scramble for about 500 of the meters. Too steep to go around on the sides.

I left everything on the course, nothing left in the tank. Recovery day -Sunday.

watched the 7 video interview with Eric Boone about Rogaines on Runbosco. Interesting what you can pick up from something like that. So glad the Rogaine on Saturday will be in cooler weather!

Walking 29:05 [1] 2.82 km (10:19 / km)

Finished updating the Camp Stem Map with the GPS Data.

Set Time on controls 31 - 76. Control 44 was dead used the remaining start control to replace it. I wanted to replace 47 since V=3.0 but waiting on the shipment of 8 controls under repair to make it back. I don't need the start controls at the score o's, I can just use the start keys.

Mapping 5:48:00 [3] 9.93 km (35:03 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Spent the day at Camp Stem trying to find the old perm course. Also gathered reams of gps data. Now comes the fun part of geo-referencing the map and also analyzing the data.

Certain parts of the map were still good - roads, gas pipelines, contours and the features like creeks, etc. Trail system is gone, the new one is not on the map. Vegetation coloring in the forest is not accurate.

Walking 28:50 [1] 2.82 km (10:13 / km)

Kayaking 2:47:00 [3] 7.37 km (22:40 / km)

Started work on a Paddle O map at Camp Stem. The carry was 88 meters not bad. I was surprised that all of the "beaches" were mud. Instead of quicksand, it was quickmud. Learned real quick to go in at the edge of the rock and mud. No problems once I figured that out. Still mulling over this one for a paddle O. Rough River Lake is the best by far with real sandy beaches and interesting scenary.

Walking 28:50 [1] 1.41 km (20:27 / km)

Getting ready for a kayak trip to Camp Stem tomorrow. Looking to see if this works. The camp did not realize they have access to the Ohio river. The camp has a border on the Ohio for more than 5KM. The mapper did not include the shoreline except for one little piece. I plan on doing some shoreline mapping tomorrow using the GPS and DVR. Arnie has made a first pass at geo-referencing the map.

Mapping 1:05:40 [2] 3.45 km (19:02 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Was mapping at Arthur Draut Park today. 3 Beaver lodges not sure how you map them but I put them on as knolls, since thats what they look like from a distance. Experimenting with the LOJIC maps. I geo referenced one and am working with it. Just wanted to see how it works. They were alot easier to work with when I could save them as a jpg file. Now you have to print. Will have to look up some screen capture software if I try to go this route.
