Orienteering race 2:28:15 [4] 8.5 km (17:26 / km)
shoes: Jalas - Spiked

My first solo night run. The positives of this race, I did not wander around lost for an extended time like I did at the North American. I had two controls that I had to reorient on, control 73 and control 49. Both I knew I was off rather quickly and reset to the last known point.

Negatives, I had some awful route choices. I am trying to understand why I made those choices. The bad ones looking back were 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and 13 to 14. The other negative was overall conditioning is starting to be my biggest issue now. When you are too tired to run on the roads the second half of the race, you will always finish at the bottom.

Orienteering race 2:50:00 [4] 11.0 km (15:27 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Great Practice for me. It was fun to do a local meet and not have to put out the controls. I should have gone for one more control in my last 10 minutes, but pulled off - okay I was chicken.

I went with my trail runners should have used my spiked shoes.

Realized as I was doing the meet that the map needs some updating.

Orienteering warm up/down 1:00:00 [2] 3.0 km (20:00 / km)

Picked up 4 controls. In hindsight, I should have picked up 4 controls I did not get for extra practice.

Rough River Map Proofing. Went over the Lodge and Infield area for possible use in a future triple sprint.

I also had the opportunity to meet with a couple people from the park.

Sunny warm weather was replaced with a driving rain and sleet this morning.

Mapping 2:59:00 [3] 7.94 km (22:33 / km)

Mapping at rough river today. Replaced all the labels on the permanent course today.

Then I mapped the SE cliffs area in the state park. This 2KM area of cliffs I had not mapped yet. There is a nice shelf between two cliffs through most of it. A lot of interesting features in this area.

I hope to be doing the NE cliff area tomorrow.

Orienteering race 2:23:44 [4] 7.0 km (20:32 / km)
shoes: Jalas - Spiked

Reminded me of the Friday course at the North American. It was a very green course and it started to rain & sleet halfway through my course. As I would go through the green forest, the water from the leaves gave me a shower every few feet. Really struggled with the glasses fogging up. Thankful for spiked shoes only fell once on the course despite the wet conditions.

I had picked up some additional skills from the North American and some mental toughness to make it through the course.

Course setting on Green was flawless. I slowed down out of the start to prevent my normal nervous rush to no where. The first control showed me, I would not luck into anything today becuase of the green forest. My navigation would need to be dead-on. At 2 I used the south side of the fence, my plan was to go up the creek to the junction and attack from there. Some how ended up to far North, trying to reset at the Junction could not pin it down. Ended up going to the trail and reattacking from the camp site. I hit it dead on that way. I wasted a lot of time but was glad I kept making myself reset instead of wandering around in the woods for a hour. On 3, I aimed off and hit the creek N of the control and went down to the control. I did the same thing on 4 using the S side of the fence and hit the control. Had to stop and take off the wool sweater and tie it around my waist. On the way to 5, had a 10 second internal debate, use the creek or the trail. I ended up using the creek and follwed it to the road. I crossed over the bridge and took the trail my plan was to cut over south to the fence after the bend, since it looked white. I could not find the fence and came out on the trail, I tried a few different times to find it could not. I reset at where the trail is over the earth bank and went east just north of the trail. I hit this way. I have no idea what I was doing wrong before that. I hit 6 straight on since it was near the trail and creek. On my way to 7, I was planning to stay on the trail to the east, but as I was studying the map for attackpoints, I had missed the turnoff. I was almost down to the big creek. I quickly hatched another plan and stayed east of the creek going through the forest southward. There is a nice white section of forest just before the 3rd creek which is not on the map. Something happened I thought I would hit a dark green after the 4th creek, instead it must have happened later? I found myself at my catching feature, the trail. I reset at the fence on the trail and went over and punched the control. Cut over to 8 using the N side of the fence, the N side of the ditch and went just North of the pond. I could see both the field and the pond. The route to 9 was very green and wet. I stayed just south of the creek and followed it down until I ran into the control. I was having trouble seeing anything with all the fog and water on the glasses. I went straight N to the white forest and followed the veg boundary around to where I thought 10 was. Instead I ran into my catching feature the ditch and went back to it. On 11 I followed the trail until going through the green, then used the white area to navigate right into the control. On 12 I cut over on what i thought was the first re-entrant instead I was already at the second and ran right into the control. On 13, I used the white boundary worked my way across the trail to the creek and ran into the control.

My big errors were on 2, 5 and 7. It was great practice. Thanks for putting on this meet.
