Nailsea Runners' Ironwood challenge, 9.2km, off road mudbath. 5th place.
Had saved myself for this, only doing Blue course steadily yesterday.
Started sensibly (chatting to B&W guys Andy Malloy & Paul Jefferson) but dismayed as the leaders & about 20 others seemed to be gone. Ooops. Accelerated & moved thru up first big hill.. Eventually catching Jane Faram, my club's star woman who is on v good form on the roads & was looking good here too.
Foolishly passed her after about 3km, & had totally dropped Andy Malloy & Paul J too . Counted the guys in front of me - oh shit , I'm now 5th!!! What on EARTH was I thinking? Up the long road drag, all the way from the bottom to the top, i was feeling ghastly puffing & panting away at over 5mins/km, but not losing any places or gaps opening, so stuck at it. At the top, things reverted to normal and I felt good, catching the guy in 4th - but to be fair, I'd had enough by now & never tried to beat him. Turned out he was a Vet45 - he looked v young from behind!!!! Lots of techy descents & my VJ dobs delivered - awesome.
45 seconds quicker than Mark B last year , but his run is, of course, *intrinsically* superior, due to worse mud then.
1st Vet50, bottle of plonk. Smiles all round. No injuries. Great!
