Running race 1:19:48 [5] 12.0 km (6:39 / km) +466m 5:34 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

Malhamdale Fell race (a closed race)

Great race for the people at Tim's Malham trip. Ran v well here 2 years ago, 7 mins slower this time. 7 minutes. Well........

Cagoule on plus hat & gloves. Started a bit optimistically, overtook Kimb at top, and followed Phil Winskill who was clearly going to win by miles. Had that "oh shit" moment after c.15 mins as Kim & Simon clawed me back, and so decided to wuss out & run with/behind them. Ricky sped past on steep descent to bottom of cove, then I had a "senior moment" as those 3 (Kim, Ricky, Simon) all headed back up THE WAY THEY CAME DOWN. ¿Pardon?

Lost 45 secs trying to re-cross river alone (idiot), leading two juniors up with me (they thought I knew what i was doing, ha ha). Got to top of steps, the youngsters (Ewan Patten?, & a Trynor child?) had to wait for Pete T, so I asked Kirsty (waiting at top) the way, & luckily, got back on the tails of Kim & Simon. Passed Ricky. But somehow - he got back to us at the foot of the major difficulties!

Very spouty & cold & slippery & frankly, bloody dangerous Gordale waterfall, one slip would have been unthinkable. Both kim & I were too far left on the steep rocks, & had to bridge across in v scary position, with water being blown into us. Then K, S & I had a nice, friendly, non comp run in together, much to Tett's disgust ("Anyone caught not racing to the end in future years will be disqualified on the spot!" he droned)

Equal 2nd, Phil W 1st 69:26, me Kimb, Simon the EPOC SPOOKSTER , all on 79:50, some astonishing junior runs just behind us, oh dear. Doomed. DOOMED.

Was a lovely run - and I felt miles better after this than , say, my tragic training run 3 days earlier. Smiles all round :)

Orienteering race 20:09 [4] 3.0 km (6:43 / km) +84m 5:54 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Harrier 3

Paul Taylor's Malham Orienteering xtravaganza. Middle - Sprint - Ultrasprint. Mass start, children running riot, Phil W & Pete Trynor went off v fast. As often happens, I found myself next to Kim B.

Unlike her tho, i actually ran my class, meaning I "nearly won" - but the speedy Ewan Trynor (or was it Patten?) outkicked me easily on the ultrasprint section, Phil M back in 2nd, this is great!

Kim bollocked me royally for not running up - she ran up - it would have meant her vs. me. But a) she was dropping me at the end of the middle anyway, and b) i was still feeling a bit shite (stomach etc) and c) I pointed out that unlike her, i wasn't 21E British long champion last year, so there.

Mention to Chappers for doing ALL the controls (M21), and I watched him losing 2 mins at the bingo boulder. Kudos.

I felt rather rough later and had to retire early after only one pint a& a glass of red. tHis proved to be a very sensible move.

(sick) (rest day)

Felt SHITE after that horrid run. Stomach, muscles - the lot. OH dear.

Travel to Malham in increasing snow! Made it! awesome! Let the fun begin.

Not a happy night - still feeling damaged in my delicate stomach post-that nasty run. Liz saying to NOT do fell race..... do shorter runs .....O..... K..............

Running 51:12 [3] 10.0 km (5:07 / km) +128m 4:49 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

"Steady" run, snow in fields & icy on some roads. Felt very nice at first but lack of fitness showed after 25 mins or so. Started feeling out of condition.

Long way to go.

LH hamstring (need osteo), and thigh (probably due to unfitness) hurt a little; RH achilles not bad tho.

Note

Xmas day walk in deep deep snow up the Laitemaire (1678m).

Ice axe, poles, crampons. Steep traverse on north side was hairy.

Great views, Eiger Jungfrau etc. Got a bit tired of pulling my legs up through the deep snow tho.
