Running 35:30 [3] 7.73 km (4:36 / km) +86m 4:21 / km
(injured) shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

Nice pleasant steady paced run up Malago valley for a change, post cycling on TV - and after heavy showers - cool, breezy, wet... very British and just how I like it .Felt v relaxed & fit, for a change. Not overheating or getting puffed out.

Sadly, the achilles hurt the whole way, reinforcing my need to take a complete break for a bit. 3 days in a car now (which was why i went for the run in the first place).

Just hope walking up 1000m mountain slopes in one go with heavy sack on my back isn't going to hurt it... oops. Fingers crossed.

Signing off.
Back in Sept.

Running race 37:42 [5] 9.9 km (3:48 / km)
shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 6

GWR Towpath 10k series 4. nice evening, still, overcast, not hot.

Started OK, sitting in, trying to keep it relaxed. Garmin was not agreeing on the km markers, but there's a lot of reasons why not, but garmin says 3:42 approx average for 1st 3km, ie. 11:06 at 3km. I was then dropped by two B&W guys (inc Paul Jefferson my oft-rival), but hung around two others (triathlete types), dropping one, slowed to 3:51, then was alone by the turn - 18:24 called out. 18:24?

Is that 5km? seriously doubt it? Garmin announced 5km in 19:03, which seemed a little slow too? Hmmm. Starting to suffer, sadly.

8km on the ground was an astonishing 29:54 (suspect it was nearer 30:30 at 5 miles), however I was now dying the Phil death and all alone, had been since the turn, and I knew it was game over. A 50+ chap came past at 9km - gutted. Couldn't even stay with him. DEAD.

Decided that this clearly wasn't 10km so endeavoured to run up the run in (37:42; 20th) and keep running as hard as I could til Garmin beeped me 10km. This proved agonising, not to mention ridiculous, as i gasped my way along the park alone before collapsing near where I took pics 3 weeks ago. 38:36 for "10k" ,

I've now measured it on Mapometer and believe its 9.9km, and that garmin cuts off some corners due to the gorge. So i'd say my time is worth about 38:05 which is an age pb by some 15 seconds!

Results to follow. three Vet40s beat me plus a Vet50; I was "first" Vet45. two women beat me: Annabel "very small but not as small as Becky James" Grainger Vet40, and a babalacious Exeter Uni student who's back I was studying most of the way, but she pulled away the last 2km as i did my Phil-is-dead act. Running 17:00 [2] 2.1 mi (8:06 / mi) +50m 7:32 / mi
shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

Achilles fine, so easy-ish short run in park to see how things were. Hip rubbish, no energy, achilles / heel OK but not perfect. Very tired. Need a holiday. Need a break from running.

Towpath 10k tomorrow eve 50/50. Tempted to do it and then leave the running for 3 weeks completely (whilst mountaineering)

Achilles pain easing, Ice, v tired so rest again.

Note
(injured)

rest - left achilles pretty sore. Saw physio - he thought it wasn't bad at all, just "irritated" - well I'm pretty irritated too.

Inflamed? no tear or proper tendonitis, I suspect.

Oh - completely knackered. I've had a long season & I'm worn out. Squeeze out a Towpath on friday nite? then THAT IS IT. (no plans to beat Actuary's towpath time! 38:30 would do!)

Running race (hill race) 24:56 [5] 3.57 mi (6:59 / mi) +152m 6:10 / mi
shoes: Mizuno Wave Harrier 3

Blaise Blazer, race 3, 2 years since i last tried this & dropped out with cramping calf.

Started steady, in attempt to be more "intelligent" - expecting to move through. Tom Guest & Ciaran Mcquade (Flapping person) were just ahead, but soon, they were miles ahead. Bombed down onto field, taking out one guy, & fully expected to move thru as I watched Jarlath Mckenna easily move away from the front.
Didn't happen. Belted down road, flat out, making no ground on anyone, then two people including a SRC guy i didn't know easily got me on the BIG hills. i walked the top bit, losing little ground.

Dying at the top, but rallied and ran as hard as I could thru the flat wooded mud track, and grass - to no avail.
Hit the final wooded killer hill - lost no further places but this is BAD RUNNING compared to say, Dundry thunder, or Purdown. someone from TACH seemed to be cheating on the field - he didn't go to the road bit. Hmmmmph.

I've peaked, my achilles is niggling & affecting my confidence, and I think that's the season done. Will I do Towpath? Oh go on then! (unless physio says don't). I have to be honest & say a) i don't really enjoy this self-inflicted pain that races give, b) I *was* very chuffed to "beat" Actuary's time, and c) I was also chuffed to again be ahead of Julian Bailey Gard.

I climbed this agony mountain in the 1980s - do I have the heart to do it again? Or should I accept I'm not half bad for a 50 year old (50 in 8 days time) and stop worrying about the youngsters destroying me?

Feeble warm down, Southville retained (3rd year!) the mob match trophy - possibly I helped them? No idea.Much cheering, and Heather Crane was the star of the show! :)

Beer please. thanks.
Matt Burns - good tactics in 4th, Jarlath Mckenna B&W - easy win; Scott Campbell - Westbury - very good in 2nd. Tom Guest - brilliant V50, clubmate and very strong racer (he finally caught & dispensed with our flapping man).
