Orienteering race 27:05 [5] 4.5 km (6:01 / km) +105m 5:23 / km
shoes: Mud Claw 333

BOC relay, M50, leg 2, Cragg Estate & Chesterhope common

Leg 2 for a highly fancied BOK team. Super M55 Mark saunders unable to cope with early pace of Nigel Bunn & Mike Johnson of WCOC.

Slowly reeled in first WCOC's 2nd leg runner and burned him off immediately,, then nearly caught Roger Thetford. Cocked up no 9 as Roger was going to *his* control, but mine was to the East. 15 seconds of agonizing terror , standing there, as I realised i was in trouble. Lost 30-45 seconds, but got control quite quickly & the race was on. I was now 28 secs behind Roger. I was properly motivated to catch him.

FInally ran Roger down just after no 16, then he nearly got me again as he cut thru to last control on marshy field & my shoe nearly sucked off!

Sprinted my arse off on the run in to give Clive a "Quentin-proof" lead on the last leg. It was enough. We won. By nearly 5 mins...

This is my first ever Gold medal at a national level, and I'm very pleased.
Stiff & tired!

Orienteering race 1:26:17 [5] 8.1 km (10:39 / km) +330m 8:51 / km
shoes: Yellow Mud Claw

BOC champs M50, Thrunton wood & Callaly.

Shit.

Couldn't run in terrain anywhere really - & hard technically, from the off - coped to no 4 where i lost 45 secs, then no 5 - no chance. lost 6 mins? at least 5. Could not make head nor tail of the boulders / clearings - and there seemd to be no control. Had given up when i "found" it .

Staggered on, still unable to progress effectively thru terrain. Ironically, I nearly "won" a leg I walked most of - uphill to no 7. Nailed no 8. onto moor - scene of my 1985 pinnacle, where i strode out with Dermod Ruddock. This time, i could hardly move.
Lost a minute to Clive on 10 - despite no err0r. Then Jon Musgrave stormed past - I was inept.
Hung onto him on the long path run, which took me 15 mins to Tim's 11. "Fight" later was OK; fine, then the "Run" white woods at the end was horrendous - tried to stop staggering / walking & run - immediately mildy went over on ankle. Back to walking, then.

Repulsive 2nd to last control, a ridiculous rootstock in a badly mapped "area". Found it, ran to finish, hated it.
Completely outclassed on this type of terrain, and , more importantly, I loathed nearly all of the course. Which was overplanned.

Never again shall my days be darkened by these areas, and 1985 is soooooooooooo last century. GOod bye.

Orienteering race (Urban) 36:54 [4] 5.9 km (6:15 / km)
shoes: Brooke Ravenna 4

BOK Urban series - Cheddar - Long, 5.9.

Used Garmin, which beeped every km, which was about every 4mins 16 secs. Quite pleasing!

Only error last control, when i went into the wrong "yard". Slight route choice slip to 18 but not much. Raining & wet so took it steady - not wanting to slip over.

left calf / achilles was playing up a bit but nothing like 2 weeks ago.
Short warm down.

Running (jogging) 19 [2] 2.3 mi (8 / mi)
shoes: Brooke Ravenna 4

Foot stopped hurting today - so it hurt for all three days of the long w/e, cheers for that. Nice.

Tried jogging in park with Garmin, so see if i could use it. Clealy not,

What i did find was that the lap of of 3-lap 5km Victoria Park fun run, that I won in 20:15 in Sept, is 1.03 to 1.04 miles, so utterly spot on. 3.1 miles = 5km. But climb = 3 x 64 - 78ft (mapometer disgarees) so over 200ft of climb which is why 20:!5 seems slow!

Note
(injured)

Foot less sore but still no way am I running yet. FInger terrible BTW. Unusable. Will spend some ££ if required on a private scan. What is inside my finger? Mush? (see andy Marr's achilles).

Not particularly happy about my summer prospects (climbing, mountaineering etc) now.

Please foot get better so I can enjoy one hobby?
