Tyntesield 10k, off road hilly race, very dry conditions, wore trail shoes which was an error - road racers would have been best. sunny & dry air.
High class field. Start insanely fast - mostly downhill. FLat out but still burned off by everyone, including a clubmate Thomas Guest whos' a V50 , then by 2km was worried as started to lose places AND was struggling with the pace - total burn up!!! In top 20, then slowly on big lap, started moving through, taking out a few including Paul Jefferson of B&W, and Jim PLunkett cole - both of whom I've never burned off before.
Steep earthy track up thru woods followed by orienteer-ey wood bit suited me and i was moving well. recovered slightly - c. 6-7km.
Died at top of course near 8km going uphill in grass - I was reduced to a shuffle, gasping - lost a place and was an embarrassment to myself. At 8km (so they say) he said "2km to go" and my watch said 29:54, so no way was it 8km / no way was it 10km!
Jim P-C caught me on the fast path descent to 9km, and we popped out onto the road at the end together. I was resigned to a ghastly burn up and my shoes were all wrong for the last road but, but he just fell away, so I staggered in, broken, loathing the road in my trail shoes. I'd stabbed my r thigh on a post too, that'll be sore in the morning.
Missed a podium (Vet40 age 49.75!!!) by one place. 16th out of 353.
