Mike Nelson BOK Trot, Trellech common & beacon hill, Short Brown.
Hadn't run properly for about 10 days. Set off and felt bouncy and the first 8 controls was flat out and feeling great.
6 & 11 resembled a road race, at which point I decided I must have a big lead, as I was flying. Then I hit the grim SE slopes.
No major foul ups, just a struggle. lost nearly a minute at 13, dunno why - the gully just wasn't coming up! But won the next leg. 17 was slightly bingo and I lost 30 secs in the circle, plus had had to walk all the way up the grim hill beforehand. Hammered it to 18, and 19, but struggled in the gorsey terrain to the finish and, as it happened, only just scraped a win. Which I'm very pleased with.
Worth pointing out that today was on the same area as the BOK Trot in 1979, 35 years ago, where my Mum (W43) & both sisters(W17;W13) were in the prizes (I still own my Mum's mounted map), and I, having come 3rd in M13 at Longleat the previous year, expected more. In my first year as M15, I suffered and blew up, making errors, and came nowhere - would love to see results, I believe a lad a year older, a C.Hallett, (KSODA/BOK?), won, whatever happened to him.....?
Great weather and a great atmosphere at our premier event - for a change, everyone seemed to hang around for hours afterwards, helped by the Ultrasport and burger/bacon & brews van. Perfect spring sunday. A day to remember the past, and make a new memory.
