Compass Sport Cup round 1, Wessex, Studland. Extremely worried about calf. Masses of relevant hip & leg limbering up, then started, gripped with worry. Apart from a dodgy no.1, I started nailing every control, whilst running easily & slowly (for me in a race). Gutted at no 6 as my calf knotted. Stopped. Stretched. Started, then a stab of severe & unacceptable pain - Stopped - immediately decided to retire. Walked, then the gradient changed so trundled to & dibbed no 7 (as was on the way to finish). Ambled to 8 just out of curiosity. Pain going. Continued carefully. More pain at no 10, and 12, by which time I'd worked out I could hobble efficiently, and on certain terrain (marsh, downhill, tussocks) actually "run". No mistakes really - as going slow. Not particularly knackered at finish & surprised to find I'd won. As did BOK! 11 hours' trip - 4 hours on coach home! Marathon day. Soaked poor sore calf in hot bath. Physio to be summoned tomorrow. Pleased & pissed off in equal measures!
PS. nb. a lot of people on here complained about the map, and i admit that, particularly at no 1, it was atrocious, to the point where I thought, this is mad! It cannot be!!!! But i think I did well today because I quickly adjusted my expectations of accuracy (eg. around contours) to reality, and from then on, everything fitted roughly well, so I was roughly on target all the time. But yes - lovely area, shame about the map....
