Orienteering 1:28:54 [4] 12.68 km (7:01 / km) +386m 6:05 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

Determined to "do" a Southern Champs course in the FoD out of bloody mindedness.

Changed mind re. New Beech at last minute, as know it too well. Found Lydney Park 2010 M45L, which i apparently came 5th in 73mins , Feb 2010.

Parked near no 18, and missed finish field. Started at no 18. route to no 19 total brambles - awful. Went round paths. Map showed my 2010 route and sadly this influenced me masses, not really taking different routes. Brambles near no 8 & 9 biblical. Just - no!!!!

Many signs saying "private woodlands - do not enter" & "shooting may be in progress" . Disturbed dozens of pheasants. Didn't feel very comfortable. Was not wearing BOK gear! ;-)

the long leg took me about 11-12 minutes, i think Clive may have done it sub-10 in 2010.

Generally a horrible experience but good training & thighs, whilst not perfect, held up fine with the 386m of up & down.

Good run over Stoke park in fantastic sunshine. one segment effort, & kept pace up around that. Thighs were mercifully much improved. Let's hope it stays that way now, please.

Having watched world XC champs all day (Denmark) - which was excellent & highly recommended.

Steady chatty stoke park run with Tim.

DOMS in thighs still a problem, but is it DOMS? it comes on WHEN i'm running. And only since my virus (3 weeks ago). Just...... wrong / odd. And effing annoying. WHY?

Orienteering race 36:00 [4] 7.53 km (4:47 / km) +40m 4:39 / km
shoes: Innovate Terraclaws

BAoC army Barracks easy race, Shrivenham Barracks?

Fun easy 4.9km (direct NOT optimum route!) semi-urban race; could have worn flats . 36 minutes dead.

Fine until last 5 mins when DOMS returned to thighs - WTF? Eh? What is going ON here? No DOMS in thighs for years now it's every run. Post-virus 2-3 weeks ago. Hmmm.

No real errors.

Didnt' stop Garmin properly & it got stuck in stupid splits eternity, so this is wrong. 36:00.

(rest day)

Definitely no spare energy today for any sport.

Note: Clio has read this and said: "Grim. It sounds like norovirus. Highly contagious, can catch it from about a 2mm sized bit of exposure. Even from the handle of a toilet!!"

reading this, she's right. I had all that. gotta feel bad for the people on the same flight as me.

Orienteering race 44:49 [5] 6.6 km (6:47 / km) +130m 6:11 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

TOAC race Foret de Rieumes, south of Toulouse, hot, with Pete James & family, entered Violet Longue,. 5km / 130m. Still got DOMS in thighs.

Hot, scrappy start, scrappy map / area, Pete started after me so a bit concerned when i lost 30 secs at no 1 & similar at no 4, & 5.

Plugged away with the heat & the grotty green shading, got lucky a few times, map well dodgy at no 15, but it was given away to me by another runner. Really struggling up big hill at the end - am I unfit?

Turned out Pete never found no 14, despite trying several times & walking in from a path junction (i reckon map wrong) - it may have been 40m wrong, I would concede; & he also misread 18 for 8 so tried to find 8 repeatedly & then went to 17 not 8! #outofpractice.

Was winning outright by 7 mins? when we left, Pete DNF, but a fine day out. Soon to change see later.

Note
(sick)

Possibly one of the worst travel experiences of my long, long life. only spinning around on all fours in a railway toilet in India in 1993 was worse. (front end; back end; front end; back end etc)

Started feeling "peaky" in the afternoon post-O/ lunch. Decided it was "mild sunstroke". By 5pm, was in bed, curled up , embarrassing. Missed the family evening meal.

Got up & "manned up" as Pete took me to airport. Where things went from really bad, to off the scale. Retching on the road. Stomach AGONY. On all fours in the toilet. Crawled to gate. Somehow got on plane. Cabin crew tried to get me off plane. I was moved to another seat. Started getting worse - people moved away from me. Feverish, writhing. Filled a sick bag with puke. This was biblical. I am NEVER sick.

One crew was 1st aid trained, so she was doing Obs, BP, heart rate ("is it normally slow? it's only 54...." Me: "Yes, it's fine". "how far was your race? Have you overdone it? " "This never happens after races" etc etc. They also got concerned re. my "diabetes" ("WHATEVER") & spent ages stabbing my finger but failed to get a reading. (BP was 132/90, so somewhat higher than normal)

Mercifully passed out. Wheeled off plane with some OAPS. Then the diarhhoea started. (in arrivals hall) This was actually fine, and i was able to muddle my way home. after a dodgy few minutes.

What an epic end. Idiot to have tried to get home - but now i'm here, feeling weak , I'm glad i'm here not still in Toulouse..... (no food from 3pm yesterday until one piece of toast just now).

We have no idea how I got this acute food poisoning/gastric flu (assuming it was that).

lets' just say the washing machine is on.

Running 58:00 [3] 9.5 km (6:06 / km) +30m 6:01 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

thigh DOMS from thursday, from tuesday, from Sunday CSC.... hmmm.

Easy running with mainly Pete James near Toulouse as part of his corporate "challenger" training, v easy O in a flat , rock hard forest .

L calf stabbing pains initially, eased with hip stretches. Garmin omitted first loop of around 13 mins, 1.5km?

Very hot. Cut thru woods twice, regretted it both times & very nasty undergrowth)

NB> had bad wind in night, & then had a horrendous & massive dump in the woods. this could be relevant - we'll never know (see tomorrow).

Steady run stoke park - frenchay, new path found between UWE & holiday inn (found by Tim, who runs EVERY EVENING when he stays here - Jeez).

last 15 mins thighs were giving way. weird. post viral fibro? hardly?

Busier at home with the ME/CFS work plus coordinating BUOC races, it was easier when i had a job!

Cycling 44:00 [2] 8.0 mi (5:30 / mi) +60m 5:22 / mi

Lots of cycling today - to & from town, to & from GP surgery.

Note: weight 67.8kg, and BP 124/75. that's OK.

warmdown (2 miles) https://www.strava.com/activities/2227194846

Must have cycled 12+ miles today.
3 PM

Cycling 19:11 [4] 8.05 km (2:23 / km) +28m 2:21 / km

Fancied a burn up & see if i could get under 20 mins for 5 miles on the bike, as my 10 mile time is always 45 mins & on normal roads. So after GP surgery, i joined the bristol-bath path & bashed out 2.5 miles, turned round. came back.

think it was a negative split which is weird as the way back seemed into a wind & slightly "uphill" (ie, not as flat as , well, flat).

the women's world best for 10 miles is about the same as my 5 mile time. Don't give up the day job, then. nb. tunnel means climb may be a bit off - Garmin says 181 feet - no WAY!

Running 42:47 [3] 8.23 km (5:12 / km) +70m 4:59 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Steady run in Froome valley - oldbury court.
Felt rough, not recovered from after effects of virus yet, need a few easy days yet. 5mins/km felt tough.

Finger is definitely a blood vessel damage - swollen & discoloured, but nothing sinister. not need for guitar playing either. (middle finger right hand)

S&C 1:00:00 [3]

Indoor climbing, Bloc , with Clio.

Was good, felt light; tweaked finger at end tho, hopefully just damaged blood vessel (s).

Thighs sore today! from a 37 min O race yesterday. Dear me!

Good to see Adam keeping up his Monday-marathon (or at least 20 miles) today. is this sensible?

Orienteering race 37:10 [4] 5.64 km (6:35 / km) +230m 5:28 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

CSC qualifier, QO, the Slades, Blue men 4.7km 37:10, 3rd, Clive 35, Ifor 36

Dreadful journey there as Adam had written the postcode down wrong, took us to Taunton, then he said oh it's Triscombe , so we got there, but there was no way in, then we had no reception so we could not see the QO webpage then we got to the quoted postcode but NO O SIGNS. , so drove all over the Quantocks, he missed his start time.... I did about 40 mins more driving that i should have... postcode TA5 1HN, try it! WTF?

Easy course, one error (no 10) on dodgy traverse with poor veg mapping - 2 mins. SIAC fab. no 10 - was a little too high then overshot. Ended up on big path at top to relocate - 2 mins. Annoying. Should have taken more care.

Struggling to "run" on any gradient, and really out of puff, unsurprisingly. 2 mins down on Clive (also ill) and 1 min down on Ifor. Not great. But better than I expceted 48 hours ago.

Got home & heart rate quite high.

Note

Feeling better.

Phew.

Friday Mar 15, 2019 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Little improvement. Went out to shops/chemist, & head was "swimming".

>50% chance I do not do CSC qualifier now.

I should be worried about post viral syndrome, but I'm not - probably because I went through that acutely 20 years ago, and it was about 10 times worse by this stage. And I'm doing everything 100% right here - so why worry?

Back grim. Lack of exercise is hindering.

Thursday Mar 14, 2019 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Cancelled climbing today.

Hmmm.

I seem to have viral sinusitis. there's no cure, apart from rest . Had a hot bath with Vicks in it & Olbas oil etc. Vitamin C. Just got to sit it out.

QO on Sunday very much in the balance now.

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

MRI scan on my lower back is back:

"Small disc slip; no nerve compression" .

where I go with this is up to me - probably an osteopath. I still have daily pain.

God I'm in the wars.

Wednesday Mar 13, 2019 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Nope. Not feeling well enough. Optimism does not yield results.

Disappointing day. No jog for me.

Sinuses need to clear before i can start feeling "normal" again.

Tuesday Mar 12, 2019 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

More improvement, nose still blocked up somewhat. No rush to get back to normality tho - give it at least another day.

Unable to sleep without Nytols now - I go 6 months without any, then it's a half every night or I'm wide awake. Fun.

Monday Mar 11, 2019 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Another grim night, but definitely a sea change in my virus.

Main thing is avoiding this spreading to my chest/sinuses; if I can avoid that, I *should* be OK after a few more days' rest.

No sign of any post-viral reaction, which is always a bonus. But it's early days. PC on for 1st time since Thursday.

Sunday Mar 10, 2019 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Another vile night, several symptoms making me thrash around.

barely improved. another day basically on sofa, tho i made a huge effort to get to Tesco for essentials.

I'll be very surprised if i get to the CSC heat next w/e.

Edit; feeling somewhat better this evening.

Saturday Mar 9, 2019 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Hideous night, drowning in snot, gasping for air.

Made it to newsagents: rest of day on sofa (slept!).

Disappointment hurting even more today. Though at least I know now that i could NOT have gone & "toughed it out"

Plan had been to take it steady & check routes & codes, safe routes, anyway, as 3rd string runner.

They'll not ask me along again. 2024 as M60 next chance?

Friday Mar 8, 2019 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Dreadful night, drowning in snot & gasping for air

No question re Interland - pulled out immediately. Team manager agreed I'd make everyone else ill too, sharing a van with BOK runners tonight & then coach from 6am tomorrow (unthinkable)

Completely bed / sofa ridden all day, just able to feed myself.

No need to tell anyone how disappointed I am, after waiting 35 years for a international selection, to be floored by one virus.

Indoor roped climbing at UCR with Katrina (1st time this year with her)
Light; nimble; got up 3 6b's. One on sight . Fun.

Um. Feel like I'm getting a sore throat / cold.

Good grief. Like, really?

well what will be, will be, I guess.

Note

POM results are up

Day 1 - 5th, good result, some mistakes but many people found it v hard.
http://pom.pt/archive/2019/results/pom2019_results...

Night sprint - 3rd - podium - brilliant! Clean run.
http://pom.pt/archive/2019/results/pom2019_results...

Day 2 - 17th - howler at no 6 - should have been 3 mins quicker ie. top 10.
http://pom.pt/archive/2019/results/pom2019_results...

Day 3 - DQ - rushing too much & too stressed. Lesson learned. Time was 37:20, so could have done fine had I just S-L-O-W-E-D D-O-W-N.
http://pom.pt/archive/2019/results/pom2019_results...

Day 4 - Long - 4th - Steady & careful, safe routes, "wins" the day.

Wednesday Mar 6, 2019 #

Note

Travelling back from POM - 13 hours.

Orienteering race 1:05:31 [4] 10.4 km (6:18 / km) +70m 6:06 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

POM long day - Quiaios. DQ so nothing to lose & nothing to go for, and Graham only jogging, and Interland now firmly on my mind. Stay well.

8.2km / 65:31. 4th. Nice steady chugg round; two errors, neither major, tho both avoidable. 4th on the day. Right. Steady & careful wins the day, then.

definitely got lucky with some controls, eg. the one after drinks no 2, but I also make my own luck with steady safe routes. I'm not Olav, Venla, or Andreas, nor Ben,. Megan, nor really Mark S., so I need to take it carefully on technical terrain.

Great to see Megan 2nd & Ben finish M21SE with style.

I loved the POM, am so glad we went! 2020 repeat?

Monday Mar 4, 2019 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 37:20 [5] 5.4 km (6:55 / km) +70m 6:30 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

POM day 3 middle, Quiaios

Overate at a buffet the nigh before - bloated & nervous & fat & dry mouthed. not a good start.

tried wayyy too hard, terrible no 2 (GO ROUND THE PATHS), but by being aggressive & racing flat out was probably back in with a shout (eg. faster than Ben Mitchell on my leg 5....), when my brain imploded & the 2 codes in my head (104, 100) became switched so when i found 100 having bananaed, I was happy having found "my" control. In oxygen debt, I didnt' realise when I failed to find the next control easily, why.

Last few easy controls i was sprinting like a total bastard, not run like this since 2016.

Dry mouth; stressed; not enjoying it. THis isnt' what it's about.

DQ & out of POM.

11 AM

Orienteering race 38:43 [5] 5.6 km (6:55 / km) +70m 6:30 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

POM Middle, day 2, Quiaios

Racing too hard, but lovely early forest meant i was happy, sadly i got wrong code in head for no ? , spiked it but assumed wrong control. ran off, realised , ran back,. argh! 45 secs binned. can't do this at this speed.

Much worse was to come. Both graham Patten & I crossed the WRONG stream, into a vile block of green forest, he lost 2 mins, I lost over 3. Now out of it - 17th?

Cross with myself. There's always tomorrow. I'll make amends.
(that was the problem ).

Orienteering race 36:52 [4] 5.3 km (6:57 / km) +70m 6:32 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

POM day 1 middle - hard & green early on, tried to not cock up, nearly made it but missed on no 6 & 8, total of 3 mins?

Worrying to see both Megan & Ben in the thick green vileness , also finding it tough & making errors. I'm out of my depth here.

Picked it up later on the superb runnable bit & went into super-spiker mode. Even announced on the run in as "new first place M55" "Phil Moooray".

5th, 4 mins down, very pleasing; a lot of better orienteers clearly found it a a lot harder, not just the m55s, the elites too.
7 PM

Orienteering race 13:05 [5] 2.51 km (5:13 / km) +60m 4:39 / km
shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 6

POM night sprint. 2.5km. Completely fab!

Ran the whole lot, modest Petzl headtorch on, occasionally sprinting, and loved it! no real errors tho a few minor hesitations.

we (Paul, Laurence, Dimitry & Antoine) commandeered a ringside bar table for 4 HOURS whilst this went on - I started first, so was back & chilling for a while - a massively enjoyable evening which ended with pizza, beers & me on the podium in 3rd, 1 second ahead of 4th (thank you SIAC!!)

And so ends Super Saturday! Phil will never see the like of it again. Just wait til tomorrow. (I do wish tomorrow never comes sometimes!)
