Note
(rest day)

inner ankle from thorn yesterday rather sore in shoes today - ouch!

Savlon. Tired / beaten up - I don't know how to take it easy..... legs covered in scratches.

So a rest day. Back also grim, but not as bad as yesterday morning.

12 PM

Orienteering race 1:04:29 [5] 11.78 km (5:28 / km) +55m 5:21 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

Note: both glutes / buttock so sore in night, kept me awake, so was thinking of pulling out of this event, but after lying on the floor for 5 minutes I improved.

Army Brown course, 10.4km, Greenham common 3rd/47 , 64:29

Fine crisp day. Fairly easy nav, & flat, but some nasty brambles & frozen marshes to contend with. Started 1-2 mins after Colin Dickson but only caught him when he made small error at no 11. Then into urban bit - in dobs! Oh Jeez. Struggled to keep Colin much behind me; small miss at 16, (Adam lost more), then finally broke Colin when I took fast path route to 18. then pressed on. Lucky on no 22, 23 found possibly the hardest - vague & tough woodland; then fast to 26 where i made a small slip (wrong gorse dead end - 30 secs?), lucky on 28 & esp 29 (knoll? really?). then more bingo fun at no 30 (15 secs?), thorn in heel, ouch, stagger to finish, remove thorn.

64mins, Adam 57, Mark S 78, Colin D. 70, Geoff 75 (!)

S&C 1:00:00 [3]

TCA indoor bouldering climbing with Liz, Jude & David. 1st climb for a week!

Not bad. LH buttock was pretty awful this morning, hopefully this will have helped.

Did a reasonably hard 40-move circuit first go - just. Killed me. Had to lie down at the end.

Steeper stuff later made my core hurt in a good way. Generally not bad & better than last week, but not feeling great.
7 PM

Running 1:08:00 [3] 10.8 km (6:18 / km) +170m 5:50 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

BOK Hanham run, no Garmin, mainly easy. Quite wet & splodgy - should have worn innovate terraclaw. Went over Troopers Hill

One reasonabel effort up long gradual drag - kept Tim Tett at bay.

Jim was easily fastest up the crazy hill . Tereza & I did it twice :-)

Climb estimated.

Note
(rest day)

Surprisingly tired; rest day.

Sunday Jan 27, 2019 #

Note

In the spirit of AP, my left buttock is now killing me, and my lower back meant I struggled to stoop under branches etc. there's always a price to pay!

I need a break.
12 PM

Orienteering race 1:00:18 [4] 9.03 km (6:41 / km) +111m 6:17 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

BOK Stock Hill Brown coure, 7.5km/165m Level C

Good event, good course; good map. Worthy of a proper write up.

Started one min behind Laurence T. & about 3 mins after Mark S. Slow on no 1, but 2 & esp. 3 were good & I caught Laurence.

Stupidly went west on track S. of no 3, to path to "semi open by road" which was awful - gorse, then vile tussocks. 90 secs lost. By the time I'd fought my way to no 4, (OK attackpoint!), Megan was on me & past, she banana'd slightly to no 5 which helped me, I dropped into it & "followed" her onto the planting direction slow run.

Idiotically turned right (south) at path, realised quick (10secs?), then good line down to no 6, knew from watching Owain & Olly mess it up earlier which was the best car (yes, car) to attack from, spiked ;-) (This is "why" I "beat" Clive).

no 7, finally re-caught Laurence. Then messed up no 8 - re-entrant? Hmmm. Laurence back with me, but I just pressed on and deliberately didn't look round. All good then til the mire of the rough open crossing to 16, and Mark S appeared before me (handily finding the flag for me) (like Ben Mitchell, I felt unnerved by extra depressions here....) - I suspect he thought, "Where have you been, Mr Murray?" Got into a good happy "flow" thru 17-21, all great. Yay!

22 - got lucky, as not sure that was right? then 23 , 24 , fine, hoping for sub-60, then could not find last control !!!! - as had no plan, & no visualisation of the place. 90 secs binned & outside an hour finishing time. Initially pissed off.

Expected Clive 52, Ben M 45, Chas 54, Pete W, 51, or something - Ben delivered (as did the other Ben M), but I was actually slightly faster than Clive & only 2 mins behind Chas - had i not messed up no 25, he'd still have narrowly had me......... BUT NOT necessarily, if I'd had SIAC....

Good day out . knackered & freezing and not the best of runs, but time on Stock Hill is never time wasted. Despite experiencing the enormous endless wide chasm that is now the gap between me & the likes of Ben & Megan (& Adam & BenM.....!)...... :-) Kudos to Ben Maliphant, great to see him back.

10th out of 55; 2nd M55, Clive 3rd M55 ;-)

Cycling 1:07:00 [3] 14.5 km (4:37 / km) +200m 4:19 / km

FoD Dean cycling (MBK) with Charlie - Ifor was coming but his van broke down in Chepstow. Mild but getting wetter.

Pedal a Bike away - Blue circuit. Found it hard . Bike not up to it. Nor was I! Fun tho - and looking at the ex-orienteering area Sallowvallets (RIP) was nice - love the FoD. https://pedalabikeaway.co.uk/trails/mountain-bikin...

Charlie had to wait for me a few times. Punter!

Good fun tho & Charlie set off on Red circuit whilst I warmed down on the babies' track. Back took a battering during the bumpy bits , but seems no worse (ie. still pretty grim) afterwards.

JK 2014 Day 3 course with Charlie - 8.7km 160m

Fun,. shadowed Charlie for a bit then did 9-8-7 in reverse order & avoided him so as to actually do my own nav.

Quite tussocky . Very good workout, good compass & tussock practice. Hamstring niggly, back iffy, but not show stoppers. Missed last 4 controls (sprint finish bit).

Sore from last night. Back bad but no worse than usual.

Had hoped to swim (too lazy / tired) &/or jog with Tim later (he was late home from work). So did neither. Walked to Tesco in the sun instead/ instead of driving. Rucksac on back. Good move.

S&C (Climbing) 1:00:00 [3]
(injured)

(Note: back flare 8/10 - horrendous pain getting out of bed, actually shouting in pain. fell to floor & stretched back out & 20 mins later was able to walk & be "normal" (ish).

Indoor bouldering, Bloc, only chance this week. Not great. Couldn't get going, then got pumped & felt off (& fell off!). Cold. Felt small, cold holds could lead to injury.

Rallied a little later but tweaked top of back a bit, some harder problems . Did 2.5 circuits, not bad on 2 of them. No "zip", though.

Re-did the 6a problem I onsighted last week, & onsighted the other one (green), which wasn't too bad. Jolly good. (these would be of the order of cruxes on E2 / E3 trad routes, or 6b+ - 6c sport routes).
7 PM

Running 1:03:30 [5] 12.13 km (5:14 / km) +74m 5:05 / km
(injured) shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

BOK tuesday efforts, with Ben & Megan, and Tim Tett (who lives with me 3 evenings a week, yippee, free beer & chips!).

Warm up to Aztec then 1 lap (a mile) handicapped - horrid. Expected to catch Ifor 15 seconds - didn't. Dropped Tim slightly but then got into difficulties & Megan had flown by - great god! Ben caught me by the end but i wasn't catching Ifor in the last 400m at all. 5:54, Ben 4:50-ish, Megan 5:20-ish, Tim & Ifor both 5:59 (!), Tommi 6:04.

Then a dreadful BMX track effort (no way - hamstring hell), and a 800-900m effort (not bad: Tommi pushing me hard - only got gaps when I wasn't slipping!); slipping round slidey fields & finally a 800m sort of effort to end.

Coughing a lot after, the toughest BOK run I've done?

DOMS on the way. Joy.

Back Flare - 6/10, painful getting up

Massage at Liz's (finally persuaded her ). Worked on lumbar spine & QL's. seemed to help a bit.

Note

HELP !

SHALL I BUY AN SIAC?

I am about to enter POM 2019.

When entering , they ask for SI no. i'm still using the old one I've had for literally ages. The one i conveniently "lost" prior to the BOC relays champs in 2016 (that, urm, BOK won....).

Do i upgrade? And where from - the SportIdent Site?

SI rental is only 1 euro per day in POM, mind.....

thanks.

Cycled. Out too late; getting gloomy - hmm.

went up the ghastly segment Ifor recommended. In Stoke park. Ouch! then felt good for most of rest of ride, 11 miles so a bit further than usual, 10 miles always seems to be 45 minutes.

I did try on a couple of segments, got PR's, but dont' want to get sucked into this....

RH lower back more painful - good? Cos of Liz's treatment? Not sure....

Orienteering race 47:38 [3] 6.88 km (6:55 / km) +253m 5:51 / km
(injured) shoes: VJ Integrators

Back flare - 6 or 7/10, v painful getting up. No rehab yesterday - hmmmm. I can't be lazy about this!?!?!

NGOC galoppen Blakeney hill, cold. Did Blue 5.7k / 220, as i have more excuses than you can throw a shitty stick at. 47:38 / 1st.

Nice area, nice time of year, visibility good. no 2 was a huge slog, leaving me puffed out & glad not to be on Brown!

error on no 8 which will be voided anyway, as the code was wrong (this affected Brown as well); I overshot & was distracted anyway by the reams of middle aged blokes (with type 2 diabetes .... hang on ... that's me) having committee meetings about whether the code was wrong. Scott showed up (on Brown) & we didnt' mess about - punched it & moved on.

Aware of my ghastly hernia for some of the race - maybe cos i talked about it beforehand. (even getting it out - nice).

Last 5 controls an utter joy - running freely through clear woods on rough compass & nailing the lot. well inside my target "winning" time of 50 mins as a result.

Warmdown 13 mins with map, as feeling a little guilty at my shameless domination of the Blue when older gits like Clive still go out on Brown & get hammered by - in particular - an unstoppable Pete Ward. But my back was complaining the WHOLE time....

the Blue course was apparently the nicest of the day, and i have to say, it was a lovely course!

TCA indoor bouldering with Liz , Nellie & Jenny

Pretty good, new shoes & slipped off a few times.

Good overall session with 2-3 circuits as well. Cold, so didnt' really give it 100% due to injury worries

LH hip/buttock sore afterwards :-( (Flare 6/10 in morning - painful, but eased with floor stretches)
4 PM

Running 30:41 [3] 6.44 km (4:46 / km) +76m 4:30 / km
(injured) shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Steady glutey-run - 4 miles - over Stoke Park

Went ok, felt nicer than last 3 runs, despite considerable pain in LH buttock. One big hill (steps) then cruise over grass of Pur Down. No ill effects from climbing earlier. Cold! hat - gloves.

LH buttock now worse than it was this morning. Hmmmm.

Swimming 25:00 [3] 0.82 km (30:29 / km)
(injured)

Back flare - 7/10. Very painful getting out of bed.

Moved room at 2:40am as bitch upstairs decided to hoover the bedroom above mine.

Swimming (backstroke & front crawl supposedly good for bad lower back, said osteopath) - 32 - 34 lengths, or 800m+, mostly backstroke - crawl- breaststroke - crawl - short rest.

Bought new iPhone 2nd hand. £100. Pricey error. Sigh.

Wednesday Jan 16, 2019 #

Note
(injured)

Flare 8/10 first thing. Utter agony getting out of bed. (slept in bed, not sofa, as Tim down again)

Its not just running- I can't go on like this much longer in life. Constant frowning in pain, energy low, mood low

Back pain is horrible.
11 AM

Running 53:57 [3] 11.0 km (4:54 / km) +118m 4:39 / km
(injured) shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Despite awful back, steady run on Pur down / stoke park (soft grass).

Not good, & felt awful (unfit). Stuck it out. Nothing pulled. Ran over where my RH hamstring tore on Xmas day. Couldn't see any obvious "hole" I could have put my foot into. This time, nothing pulled. Whatever. (I'm trying to "engage glutes" - which will take time to re-learn; I do feel quite susceptible to pulled calves/hamstrings etc as I do this, though....).

Deaf in one ear. Back really bad. Mobile broken. What a fun week I'm having.

Note
(injured)

Note: Saw GP.

My huge swollen stomach is basically a type of hernia, and obviously a result of the total cutting through of my stomach wall in July 2017. I'm still weak there, & there's no way I will ever fully recover (at my age). Yes i do situps , Yes I plank. It can't repair it fully.

He took my back pain seriously & has ordered an MRI scan as well as blood tests.

Any ideas of repairing my herniated stomach with another operation is COMPLETELY unacceptable to me, so assuming it doesn't get worse, i will simply have the most horrid abdomen in British orienteering.(as the swelling is offset by my half-shrunken chest in most unattractive style).

#undateable

I'm proud that i can hold my core together on steep climbing ground. Let's hope that one day, loads of intestines don't come spilling out of me as I hang there..... #funfunfun
12 PM

S&C 1:00:00 [3]

Slept : sofa. Back/hip flare: 4/10

Indoor bouldering climbing at Bloc, 1st time for a while

Went ok - tried new shoes (that i've had for 18 months & not worn yet) - was good, only slipped off once!

Felt strong & light but hip/buttock complained a bit later on when doing harder sustained circuits.

Also flashed a 6a problem. Rare. It suited me - big winged holds in very steep ground, big spanning moves. Still fairly chuffed tho.

Monday Jan 14, 2019 #

Note

Back/buttock not so bad - night on sofa. Flare 4/10.

BOK ashton court Green 5km. - cheekily ran with Clive's used map. Wasn't intending to do the course, as "injured" & unreliable, but just trundled round feeling very slow & unfit. no 1 was questionable, but I had been warned. .... just touched each SI unit.

THen coaching Agnes at Clare H's & Pete M's coaching session after. Mostly walking & scampering. Good fun. Also collected 2 far controls. All good despite being a complete blob.

Indoor climbing (bouldering) at TCA with Liz, Nellie & Jenny.

Not bad, despite LH buttock being in flare.

Burned off Gnellie on a decent problem. Perhaps I'm finally getting better.

Felt light, but a bit sore , & out of practice. Vertical yoga - can't be a bad thing. Core felt weak. But it's good for core, so....

Must up my climbing to twice a week, starting NOW.

Running 23:52 [3] 5.0 km (4:46 / km) +50m 4:33 / km

Lower back / coccyx / LH buttock etc. horrendous today - twice i had stabbing pains on the run that were horrible & scary.

Tried to engage glutes on this run - which meant it was fairly frisky for a steady run. "Pulled" hamstring hurt a bit, but this is expected & going in the right direction. Whatever.

Andy Murray cry your eyes out - me too! I'm not enjoyed any running AT ALL when I'm in pain like this :-( Could 2019 be my last year too.

LH buttock in flare after run last night, so bad I struggled to sleep. When Tim's gone I will try the sofa again for sleeping.

Tim's offered to pay for me to see his guru "osteopath" in Sheffield, may take him up on that soon.

Running 23:24 [3] 4.55 km (5:09 / km) +70m 4:47 / km

Steady run with Tim, dark & cold. hamstring sore as soon as i started, but not "pulling". Also sore - left inner knee (Gower last June started this). Very insecure & didn't feel good. Also, LH buttock in flare today. So not comfortble & makes me wonder why I run if my body hurts so much.

Still. See how things go. Not 100% sure I'm not harbouring a lurg as well.

Tim carried on when i turned round at 11 minutes & he did loads more - he runs loads every day irresepective of what state he's in!

I want to do sod all & stay in bed, or in my sleeping bag on the sofa. & drink tea.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Tired. Long drive last night - home 10pm. M6 bad (lost nearly an hour)

Am I still injured?

Why did I even get injured? surely the most random & stupid hamstring "pull" of all time. A small bit of uneven ground on an easy run near home caused a pull. Yet yesterday I did 40 mins on uneven terrain on high Rigg, & not a twinge (OK, one twinge).

Sigh.

Note

Totally out of it in afternoon & sore throat. Had to lie down.
