Note

Indoor roped climbing at UCR, with Clio

All very good . felt v light & on form. Stupendous overhanging 6a+ probably the highlight, cut loose & spun round half upside down, able to clip & stay in control.

Managed 2 6b's, so am improving all the time.

Running 56:30 [4] 10.82 km (5:13 / km) +118m 4:57 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

BOK Keynsham training run, 6 of us, Ifor showing the way. Headtorches on. Very cold. Lots of paths by rivers etc.

Treated this as a full on fartlek, & on numerous occasions put the boot in, properly, as I felt very frisky & on form (much more so than the golf course one 2 weeks ago where I also tried to run off the front). I really wasn't tired after Sunday's SARUM event, so maybe I'm getting fitter at last.

Pleasing. Ease back now til the SOC weekend. The only annoyance was that i saw the OMM maps in the pub afterwards. the B course would have been there for the taking. Surely...............!

Orienteering race 55:54 [5] 9.01 km (6:12 / km) +158m 5:42 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

SARUM Galoppen "Brown" (more like Short Brown) course, Hamptworth, near New Forest, 7.8km/120m, 4th? 55:54
Clive 52, Pete Ward 54, Lawrence Townley 57

Good run; no major errors, hardly any small ones either; bracken made it hard going & a bit hit & miss re. the line you chose. I got lucky once, in the bracken, & ran OK to the end. Fun race!

Ben Chesters' time is very fast, IMO.

Note

UCR indoor roped climbing with Lynne .

Fine, cruising all the routes up to 6a, so pushed out the boat & found I could comfortably flash 6a+ with a grunt or two, but 6b involved rests & binning off (by the end!).

All good. Flight booked 15th December for a 5 day sport climbing hit to the Costa Blanca.

The "send train" arrives.......

Running 1:00:00 [3] 12.06 km (4:59 / km) +223m 4:33 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Steady run in South bristol - my old haunts 2016-17 were calling me, so I combined it with some errands. Glad I did.

Huge monstrous 100m hill in first 1.2km or so, then nice & mostly off road, and did extra at the end to make it an hour, chased by cows in a field (scary; not safe.... had they cornered me, I'd have been in trouble - 20 of them? Public right of way but COWS DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT). Risk of death.

Twinge in upper RH hamstring-hip insertion point. Hopefully no more than a twinge, & not even a tweak. Carried on running, no real pain. some minor twinging in ASDA later. No plan to run tomorrow so should be nothing.

Note

Indoor bouldering at Bloc, with Zuzka ; Clio & Gav arrived later.

not very good. fingers sore, & inflexible.

Definitely getting older & creakier here.....

Managed a couple of reds & Gav showed me how to do a hard orange which gets top end 5c in my book.

Note
(rest day)

About 60 mins of cycling on errands; still quite tired.

Only woken from 3- 3:45 am last night by the creaking & footsteps . Must be so cool, being a trendy young tech-savvy diverse millennial nocturnal person. With a 24/7 fluid membership of the gig economy.

I'm happy to be getting old.

slept:10.0 (rest day)

Phew. Relieved to have got through the past 4 days intact. And each event went really well. Yay! Now for a rest. Don't feel as off-colour as I did Friday evening / Saturday morning either.

But.

After 4 hours sleep on saturday night, unsurprisingly I passed out on the sofa last night, wayyy before bedtime. Got to bed somehow & passed out immediately again.

BUT.

2am - footsteps above me; creaking floorboards ... just standing on them makes them creak. I could almost picture what was going on above me (very little). (mine creak too....)

THEN: 3am - the same. Creak, creak, patter patter patter. Creak.

Satuday night: get in; 2am, go to bed, can hear snoring in the bedroom BELOW me this time (this flat is normally occupied max once a week, during the week). Earplugs in. But - seriously??????

AT WHAT POINT do I just throw in the towel and can this place as a duff/dud? It's stunning, great location, own grounds, gravel drive, huge rooms, high ceilings, no mortgage ... and hands down THE MOST non-soundproofed home I have ever had, in my life, ever. This is just downright UNLUCKY. but moving again is unthinkable (4 moves in the past four years - I'm completely burned out).

As a musician, I never play loudly. Cos everyone would hear every single note.

Advice?

Note

PS. as i type. they've finally got up upstairs, and of course the young man uses the living room as a home gym.

All i can hear is heavy steps above me, and the occasional THUMP or thud as he does his squats or whatever.

I mean, really?

What defines a home?

At my age i want peace & privacy. Too much to ask, right?

Orienteering race 50:31 [5] 8.04 km (6:17 / km) +213m 5:33 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

Compass Sport cup final, Cannock chase (Haywood Warren), Blue Men, 6.5km/215m 4th. 4.5 mins down on Dave Peel. Clive 3 mins up.

Good run, started 1 min after Martin Ward who shamed me so badly 3 weeks ago at Pwll Du. Didn't expect to see him, espcially after so-so nos 1 & 2 - no 2 I had no plan B, didn't know where i was, and luckily saw the feature. Close call!

Twice encountered Hollie Orr - no 2-3 (track) & again 7 - 8 (same track) - the 2nd time I finally let her past & followed her to no 8, & out of no 8, and towards no 9 - she was dropping me all the way, but Martin messed up no 9 & I was on him.

Certainly Martin helped me get no 10 but then he went high to no 11 and i contoured in - he won, the control seemed very high.

His gap was enough that when i crested the hill to no 12, he'd gone. I doubted the map here - couldnt' make sense of it - went right, then left, then changed my mind & back right. An extra track here really confused me. I was lucky to only lose a minute+ From here to finish i let rip & was rewarded with fast splits. Too late! Martin had finished. Note: he & others had SI Air, and I wonder if now is the time to finally upgrade.

Pleased; best result for a while; some reasonable scalps taken; Ifor revenge was needed! Thanks to earlier starters for creating the tracks :-) & Undy for going out earlier, & Tim for breaking himself AGAIN, & Chas for hopping round in a frankly amazing time (he was walking on the fast track where I was banging out approx 4:00min/km pace & being dropped by Hollie......)

Finally, thank god i didn't know Simon (EPOC SPOOKSTER) was running, had I known I'd have certainly cocked up a lot more & done worse. I have never *knowingly* (*) beaten him (*) - ie. Known he is running too. Edit: he ran a kilometre (!) further than i did, so I count this as a loss now.

Note
(sick)

Sadly, my easy run yesterday brought back sore throat, viral feeling & major tiredness later on into the evening. Gutted :-(

So i will storm through (fake it til I make it....) the gig tonight, just DO THE CSC race tomorrow, then have a week off, as I need to feel better than this, or i will need to take a major break from the sport. Thank god I'm not involved with OMM.

I felt rough after / before / during the Army race 10 days ago - I'm not right :-(
10 PM

Note

Huge gig on Weston Prom Pier - RNLI party - left home 3:40pm.

Big fee, played til 12:10am, home 1:50am, bed, sleep elusive.

Less than 4 hours sleep. Up at 6:20 for CSC coach trip with BOK.

thank god i have no desk to be at Monday morning, is all I can say! :-)

Nice steady sunny Stoke Park trot - blow off the cobwebs from yesterday & now "rest" up for CSC on Sunday :-) (apart from 4pm - 1:30am gig tomorrow but I'm not making excuses!) (yes i am)

Fingers crossed lurg harbouring has gone now.

Didn't feel so ill. Hurrah.

Huge day . up at 6am, cycle to temple meads, 730 train to London,. meetings all day (am now a Trustee of Action for ME), home 6:30pm, straight out to band practice, last one before huge gig SATURDAY NIGHT (til well after midnight - won't be home before 1:30am), just thought I'd put that one out there.

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Sinuses sore in night; & felt ghastly most of the day. Fuck.

I ran too hard last night, true: but this is possibly a lurg-harbouring situation. Rested all day cos of tomorrow. ie. didn't even go out & took to bed after lunch.

BOK Tuesday run

I overdid the pie/potato-eating beforehand, & tried to run off the indigestion.

Didn't work but my impression of Michael Hallett was OK

An excellent run, just squeezing the absolute max out of a golf course at night with headtorches on. Doing 6 consecutive sub-5 minute kms meant i wasn't having an easy time of it either. Kudos & thanks to Ifor & Tommi for that one - was great!

LH hip/buttock annoyingly sore. Hopefully temporary.

Note

Indoor roped climbing at UCR with Lynne - just cruised lots of easy routes, from 5b/c to 6a+.

Didn't once rest or fall. Equivalent of a long steady run. Felt totally in control, super light, but sniffly. Harbouring a lurg, maybe.

Running 1:00:01 [3] 11.72 km (5:07 / km) +167m 4:47 / km

Steady morning run in wind / VERY mild! (20degs?) . All O events postponed due to the weather - tho here in the city it's just windy & rain has eased, nothing major.

Felt a bit off colour, but survived. indigestion all night (chocolates after 8pm - IDIOT)

Orienteering race 1:13:18 [5] 10.8 km (6:47 / km) +186m 6:15 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

Army event - Alice Holt, Brown, 8.2km, warm day. Stunning weather. Poor effort. 4th. 73:18

Vegetation really dodgy, many places where the map just didn't make sense

Misses at no 3 (2-3 mins) - many lost time here, despite it being "path end". (dodgy vegetation)
4 - too far south - run not runnable; 1 minute?
8 - no idea why i missed it/the path - 1 min
9 - a "bridge" - in circle, simply couldn't locate flag - 2-3 mins?;

Lots of others also found it tough - 2 BOK retirals, plus accidental missing out of controls; Geoff struggled too. I foudn the heat very sapping (complaining in October?) - reduced to a jog / feeling wiped out (kind of ongoing..... not sure if I'm harbouring a low-lying virus). (throat sore later)

To balance it out, I did nail some controls later that others didn't (no 11, 13).
Some of this was luck, some "making my own luck".

Note

Note: Flat living sunk to a new depth last night. Woken at 3am by clear snoring. Snoring.

It's the flat below - there are bedrooms above & below me. It's a company flat, and the guy is there on average one night per week for work.

If he was always there, I would be moving again (5th time in 5 years) , as I'm sorry, this is not a home, if I'm using earplugs most nights. the couple upstairs make enough noise but I admit I'm "getting used to it".

There is NO soundproofing in this building. What a stupid waste. What were they thinking when they converted it? Oh I know - the bottom line $$$

Cheddar gorge rock climbing with Lynne

5 routes up to 6a. We were crap, but the rock is now very polished. First did some of these routes nearly 10 years ago. They'll never be the same again :-(

Not sure how i feel about climbers just trashing cliffs, it's happening all over the world, and many once-wonderful crags are now slippery horror shows.

Of course, I'm part of the problem.....

Orienteering race 42:20 [4] 6.35 km (6:40 / km) +187m 5:49 / km

BOK Blaise green course - 5.3km , 4th

Ok run, direct to 2 via river (got a gap on Pete Ward here!), no 7 grim, map seemed nonsense near control. 2 mins?

Felt ok on the running, but course became quite "Orange" standard near the end. Good fun nonetheless.

Oli Tonge's time was impressive.

Stoke park run, 5 miles. a rough field near the end. I'm not good in terrain right now.

Felt a bit crap. Last 2km I felt my right calf (it's usually my left one....) slowly getting sore.

Rest it tomorrow & if it's stiff / sore, I won't be running for a bit, as a precaution.
