Running 20:50 [2] 3.7 km (5:38 / km) +78m 5:06 / km
(sick) shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Woke at 3am with pain in stomach / core - from climbing, i guess. Pretty debilitating. Hardly slept after that.

Was due a run , & tried to "jog it off" - no joy, but the run was otherwise "fine".

The "Super Moon" was pretty cool to see - clear skies. But stomach discomfort - almost certainly from yesterday's climbing being too strenuous for my core - 6 MONTHS after my operation - bothering me - hurts to put on & take off socks, for example. . :-(

Note

Indoor climbing at RedPoint, BS3, with Clio. NOT a "rest day". **** OVERDID IT OVERDID IT. *****

Got utterly knackered, & LH shoulder wasn't happy. Need to see a physio /shoulder specialist really. This has been 4 months+ now.

Got up a fair few 6a type routes, but it's not good enough. Core (abs etc) not good - nor was core flexibility - this is all post-operation 6 months ago; I've not been rehabbing well enough.

Need to get food right - what? How? Can't eat more bread/carbs . Another near-bonk. Hmmm.

Monday Jan 29, 2018 #

Note
(rest day)

Legs pretty sore, & the rest of me. I did give it everything yesterday. And why not?

Orienteering race 55:49 [5] 8.76 km (6:22 / km) +169m 5:49 / km
shoes: Mud Claw 333

BKO Concorde Chase, Star Posts, short brown / M50, 7.6km / 220m

Good run..small error no 5 (45 secs) (foolishly in wrong mini block), drifted badly off bearing to the right on no 10 (<1 min), AND no 18 (1 min) (tiring....), plan B on no 20 didn't work (>1minute). no 17 bingo - hesitant - 30 secs.

Some other, shorter legs, I was fastest & were easily as good at O as I've ever been since my 40's comeback. eg. no 3,4, no 6.

3rd on course (2 M45s, Lawrence Townley & Richard Barrett, 2 & 1 min quicker), 1st M50 by 5 minutes, Clive faster on Black but only a couple of seconds per km. I'll take it.

no achilles or calf pain today.

Note
(rest day)

Stomach not entirely happy, but won't tick "ill" box. Am worried, tho. Not sure if related to hypo yesterday - which was a bit extreme, given an hour's cycle.

Liz gave legs a once-over. Said my flexibility was a lot better than it has been. Good!

Cycling 59:17 [4] 19.28 km (3:04 / km) +137m 2:58 / km

Cycled, for a change, found it quite hard straight off, and after 40 mins, noticed with pleasure that i was bonking. A good bonk is a good thing - especially if you're a a diabetic.

Found the new ring road that Mark Burley had said was being built - cycled down it - v good road. Shame he's gone, also i could have bought his house..... oh well.

Got very cold and the last 5 minutes were grim. Fingers not working.

Completely bonked - blood MMOL 5.2 afterwards. An hour in bed, with tea & various food, to try & regain normality. Hoping it's nothing major - seems an excessive reaction! Glad i'm not doing Black on Sunday!

Blaise orienteering help to Cath Taylor (Portishead RC)
We did the yellow course. It's on Oriento . You have to type the code into your Apple iPhone. FFS.
https://oriento.uk/locations/15-blaise-castle-bris...

Then some "harder" controls (walk / jog) for practive/ tuition.

Then i went for a run - RH achiilles was sore for first km, LH calf a bit suspect, then settled down. Very muddy/slippery - and one huge hill up alongside Goram's chair - ouch.

Indoor climbing at UCR with Clio.

Not bad, but still quite wrecked from yesterday's silly overkill. Calf fine (well, if it wasn't I would have felt it!!!), so i guess I enter C Chase now & do it.

Had to rest on a 6a. After all these years - resting on a 6a! :)

Running 32:30 [4] 6.95 km (4:41 / km) +62m 4:29 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Not the most sensible jaunt.

Attempt to run in reverse my good 10km 2 weeks ago. Early splits were too fast, & I knew it. Too hot in Helly, too.

So by past-Frenchay "moor", I was in trouble - then i hit the very wet & muddy "tracks" alongside the M32. sliding around, and suddenly a spasm in left lower calf. Have i pulled it? Walked a wet 100m then gingerly started jogging again. Phew. Intact. Close call.

Rather than jog in I slowly picked it up to reasonable pace to complete 10km in a decent ish time.

Running 16:27 [3] 3.29 km (5:00 / km) +54m 4:37 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

The last bit - ended up at snuff mills & a very slippery slab path to get back up to Stapleton, d'oh!

so total of 10.25km in 48:57, not great.

Orienteering race 1:07:28 [5] 12.2 km (5:32 / km) +113m 5:17 / km
shoes: Mud Claw 333

BOK Yoxter Ranges Brown - 10.7km, 85m

5th 67:28 Adam 55, CLive 65

Good run. Achilles (RH) sore at first. Groan. some small errors in circle; nothing major. Miss at no 2 cos couldn't stay on bearing thru the splodgy green.

Good "relay" practice later when "passed" by a QO M45 who then tried to race me. Got away only to be caught on the line as my "safe" / "game over" route to the last control cost me 20 seconds probably, and sadly let Matthew Owen scalp me today. Turned out I'd caught the QO guy 10 minutes.....

Wondering if I'll barely scrape into the BOK M50 "B" team now, what with Clive,a very very fit Richard Cottle, Ifor the relay solid man, (new to M50), and Matthew Owen. I'm 5th or 6th string now?

Running 36:05 [3] 7.2 km (5:01 / km) +141m 4:34 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Got broken PC back from PC repair man - £60 gone.

Steady run, including parts of the Eastville park run that killed me 2 weeks ago.

Segments that I repeated, i was vastly slower on, today, which is odd as I was at death's door during the park run. & felt i was hardly moving. Time to do another soon?

Letting osteo treatment settle down.

3 km walk in ashton court.

Still rather tired, maybe I'm just old/beaten up.

Monday Jan 15, 2018 #

Note
(rest day)

Osteopath (Lisa) - good sesh. Quite a violent one - but giving my still-swollen stomach care.

My "tilted pelvis" (kimb is / was right!) is no big deal at all - Lisa said I've had a pelvis like that since she first treated me in 1996.

Note.
Helen update- scan shows its "just" a 1cm lower calf tear. So hopefully not so serious, then. Dear me.

Sunday Jan 14, 2018 #

Note

Helen update - stuck at home, going to hospital tomorrow, for US scan, can't walk, has to CRAWL around her flat as she can't put any weight on foot, boot on foot, but no swelling or discoloration.

Thinks she may not have torn the Achilles too badly, but may have torn the very bottom / side of calf.

Off work & all activities completely cancelled. I may fly out to help her with life. As she can't shop etc.
10 AM

Orienteering 1:17:00 [5] 8.9 km (8:39 / km) +437m 6:57 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

BOK Headless Hill, brown, (yes, silly me) 7.3km / 405m / 21 controls

Early start (helping)
Bought a Thumb compass - 1st one ever, Gulp.

just could not get going , at all - joke to no 1 - 7 mins vs 4 mins for others.
Terrified of downhills, pulling a tendon/muscle (re. sister's serious injury yesterday), spraining an ankle, faceplanting, bashing my knee etc etc....

Caught the even more ailing Adam Hampshire (my lift share) at no 3 & we both messed up no 4. 2.5 mins?

Once he was dropped I got to no 8 , but 8-9 was one of the shittiest legs in the history of shitty legs - diagonally uphill, in mud, across vile felled FoD shite. the "forest road" just would NOT appear!!! (Adam P had same complaint).

From 9, things picked up, and I started hitting some sort of "stride", even enjoying & spiking controls - wondering if thumb compass is a good move?

Obviously benmitchell was miles ahead but to be soooo far behind Clive, Owain, Pete W, Michael H, etc, is very depressing.

Miles worse now than was at CSC final 3 months ago (for all those people that say I'm still on the way back from the operation 6 months ago)

Discouraged. But super keen for more. Which is good.
Innovates nearly died - they're shit - too frail (even a lace snapped today!) - dobs next. I'm abandoning Innovate. After 7 years.

Note

Indoor bouldering at TCA. With Liz & Nellie. Bloody knackering. I've lost a lot of climbing fitness; shoulder still not right; core very weak (from operation etc). Nellie reckoned an "alien" / "Thing"-like mutoid was about to burst out of my swollen scarred stomach at one point. Thankfully , my innards stayed inside me.

Also tired from tempo 10km yesterday.

No sign of the stomach after effects like last Friday or the Friday before that (yet), thankfully.

Running 48:45 [4] 10.5 km (4:39 / km) +88m 4:27 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Headed out for a good trot, inspired by Mark3's run along new road - I tried to do the same (new M32 junction) but came across "no access to pedestrians" signs, so binned it off & ran along new paths (new to me, that is) along W side of M32 - quite fast & pleasant! Then into Frenchay & Potter-land (should have brought Urban map with me), where i put in an Adam-inspired burst to get onto the greens/White Lion (4:12 km); started tiring, reached 8km in 36:43 and stopped for a breather & stretch.

Puntered in from here, but still sub-5min kms. This is fine - til you realise that sub-4 minute kms were what I was doing 2 years ago!

Pleasing tho. Will this be the 3rd thursday run in a row that inflames my stomach condition? We shall see.

LH pelvis less troublesome than before, & calf reasonable, hamstrings only slightly tight/sore.

No more running til I am brutalised by Headless Hill Brown on Sunday (and Ben will beat me by 20 minutes or more)

Orienteering (Oriento) 38:39 [4] 5.7 km (6:47 / km) +189m 5:49 / km
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Harrier 3

Blaise - Blue permanent "Oriento" course.
You've got to laugh.
I assumed the controls would register due to GPS, but in any case i was NOT going to unlock my sodding iPhone at each control to enter a code! "Ran" clutching iPhone in one hand, map & compass in other. This made the vile muddy descents really stupid.

I can safely say this is not as good a time as Matt P's, as he did enter codes, or Owain Jones', as he did it at night & ran 800m further with a big error.

Felt unfit, and cold, and LH side bad again - calf "snitching" (threatening to knot/tear), hamstring LH unhappy. ParkRun last w/e was not a good move.

Need to see osteo .... bring on Monday........

https://www.strava.com/activities/1348272611

Oriento - how did people get negative results? I'm proud of my "nul points".

Eastville Park Run farce

Stomach recovered overnight, sadly I am not remotely the runner i was, and even worse, this parkrun a) had poor marshalling (at the crucial turn, the woman in yellow stood there wasn't marshalling - just clapping & saying "well done!" - all the leaders carried on; people behind turned right; I was in between so nearly all my lot swore and had to change direction, I cut across playing fields - lost 20-30 seconds).

Then later on, as the leaders caught us (having done full lap), there was a mini lap and again people were splitting - FARCE! the now extra marshalls were saying "which lap did you do first time - big or small?" - I'd done neither; had another c~10 seconds stand still conversation there.

Felt shite - the gradual uphills were really tough (so unfit); yet the gradual downhills were awful, due to my LH hip displacement thing, so LH calf felt it was nearly tearing plus LH hamstring pain.

Early kilometre splits all sub 4 mins, which I'll take as a positive; otherwise, far & away the shittest run I've ever had in a ParkRun. Took at least an hour to cheer up. Sociable, which was more important.

(Even Garmin fucked up on me at the start - spent 1st 100m+ trying to get it to work - what's going on there???? - after it failed on me 2 days ago). - this explains why my own time is 7 seconds quicker than the time they've given me; I probably "raced" 5.2km. What ever. WHATEVER!!!

551 runners (Pomphrey hill was cancelled) - utterly BONKERS.

Friday Jan 5, 2018 #

Note
(rest day)

Very tired - more than I should be after a 50 minute run, but they said 9 months to full recovery from my op, I'm 53, and it's only been 6 months.

Potential bouldering at TCA canned due to Liz still having a cold.

Note
(sick) (rest day)

More stomach discomfort throughout day.

This happened last week, & is similar to last June/July.

Worrying. (Very)

Guess I'd better see GP . Blood tests last year showed my issue. So hopefully, that will not be there anymore.

Running 50:30 [4] 10.2 km (4:57 / km) +161m 4:35 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Pretty cross that i selected "running - indoor" by accident at the start, cos i was segment hunting today for 1st time & had some major wind assistance on one of them. very windy. route similar to last thurs, but no wet grass purdown.

Major efforts up hill in Stoke park - DAMMIT need to get a mark for that segment ! - plus UWE cut through segments. Had to stop and bend double to recover from these. (stopped watch)

Wussed out or purdown into the gales, and ran down the road instead. (Romney avenue). 45 mph winds - vile.

Definitely getting fitter. Aching down LH side (hamstrings/ lower back) and need to get this addressed. Appointment in 10 days. NOTHING like as bad as this time last year, though (when i couldn't run at all).

Managed to grab a run on the Pennine way into increasing snowfall & mist, was rather weak on the uphill bits.

Legs quite dead & had had enough of soft & uneven ground by the end. Rest day needed. But nice to end my Malham break with a decent outing.

Brilliant Tett-organised weekend, really enjoyed it.

Drove home ghastly - 5 hours. South africa would have been nicer ;)

Hungover & sleep deprived (from Malham Disco - I DJ-ed, bed 1:30am) & legs dead from fell race.

Managed a short walk (7km?) but sadly the weather really got bad & I got v cold & wet. Beat a hasty retreat.

Last night in Malham. Great trip.
